McFarlane Silver Age Figure

This has been a pretty crazy spring and early summer here with my moving into a new place and having a birthday within months of each other. 

With so much to celebrate and with the new shrine on display, I figured I deserved a new piece. 

A while back, McFarlane Toys came out with a Silver Age Supergirl figure and I was charmed. I have a bit of a soft spot for the earliest Supergirl stories with their earnest tales of Kara trying to help children and please her big cousin. 

The figure comes with multiple hands and an extra face so you can 'customize' how you'd like to display her. So many of these new, high-end figures come with these extras to make the figure truly yours to pose and play. 

It even comes with a card (upper right) with a snippet of the cover of Action Comics #252. 

Revamped Supergirl Shrine

For those who don't know, I recently moved into a new home. That means setting up a new office/comic book room/sanctum sanctorum. 

It also meant packing up the Supergirl collection and bringing it all back out. 

I was excited to get the display up to give me a sort of anchor amid the unpacked boxes and piles of stuff. 

With the new set up established, I thought I would share it here.

Rather packed shelves meaning, incredibly, I might need to think hard about either increasing the shelf space or being more selective in my merch purchases. But I think it looks pretty slick in total.

DC Comics Amazing Yamaguchi Revoltech NR032 Supergirl Action Figure

I recently obtained a set of book shelves which allowed me to devise a new shrine set-up. 

What better way to celebrate that than to get a new piece for the collection. And what a piece!

Purchased through Big Bad Toy Store , this is the Yamaguchi Revoltech Supergirl figure from Japan. 

Like many pieces from Japan, it is extremely articulated, with moving joints, and some articulation in the chest and even hair. If you are looking for a figure to pose in a million different ways, it is this one.

Add to the articulation that the set comes with 4 different sets of hands and 3 different faces and this is the toy that keeps on giving. Yes, there is a 'red eyes' face but also a serious and smiling one. And hands are fists or splayed of flat handed. It is pretty fun.

Add to that you get a stand with peg-holes and an extension you can stick in the figure's back to give the illusion of flying. I like the gold (not yellow) accents of the shield. It even has a cloth cape. 

I picked this 'flying by to say hey!' pose.

Supergirl Shrine Revamped

It has been too long since I last showcased my Supergirl collection here on the site.

There are a few reasons for this. The old shelves I had for the collection were too small to accommodate the collection so it seemed overly cluttered and unappealing. I also moved a bit ago and with the lack of adequate shelf space, I left some things unpacked.

Just before the holidays, I was lucky enough to obtain some new bookshelves. This one big enough to showcase the whole thing!

Turns out I have a lot of Supergirl stuff, the efforts of decades of collecting. This is a 'first go' at the arrangement and I think it works out well but let me know your thoughts. 

But I am very happy with these new shelves!

Supergirl Best Of 2024 Part One: Non-Comic Reviews And Comic Honorable Mentions

Well, we have reached a new year and that means it is a good time to go back and look at 2024 and how it treated Supergirl.

As with most years, this will be a three day review.

It has been an interesting year for Supergirl overall.

She was a major player in the Crisis On Infinite Earths trilogy movie which wrapped up that era of the DC Animated universe. She also was a key player in the second season of My Adventures with Superman television show. A Supergirl movie is in the works and she was even casted. That is a lot of exposure for the character which I think is always a good thing. But certainly the concept of the upcoming movie and her portrayal in the two animated series weren't exactly what I look for in Supergirl as a character. 

In comics, it was a bit more piecemeal as you had to sort of look to find Supergirl here and there. I think she had a great presence in the House of Brainiac arc. I think she has been treated well by Mark Waid in his Phantom Zone arc in Action Comics. But I have found her one solo story by Mariko Tamaki to be a bit lacking. 

So overall I think it has been an okay year for the character. Certainly her being visible outside of comics is a good thing. And I'll reiterate that while these takes on her don't work for me, if you love them, I am glad.

Super-Family Mobile Toy

Some time in July I celebrated a birthday. One more trek around the sun! Still here, old friends!

One of the Supergirls has been helping me add to the Supergirl collection and gave me the best gift.

Check out this old school, tin wind-up toy of Superman, Supergirl, Streaky, and Krypto flying around the Daily Planet.

Everything about this sings! The Daily Planet globe. The catchphrase around the bottom. Super-pets! Super-cousins! The classic feel!

It all works, Just a great gift.

Supergirl McFarlane Multiverse Figure

In what is best described as a late Christmas gift to myself, I finally got my hands on a McFarlane Supergirl Multiverse action figure. 

It is a very nice action figure and a solid addition to my collection.

It all starts with the box. The front is nice and clean with a good look at the figure. I like the back as well with a nice Emanuela Lupacchino shot of Kara flying in the city.

It is a wonderful sculpt as well. The face has Supergirl sporting almost a wry small smile, as if she is thinking that the villain doesn't know what they are in for. Like a bit of confidence. I am a bit particular about hair designs and  this is gorgeous. Lots of details. 

It is a small touch but I like that the yellow aspects of the costume are actually gold, even the S shield. It just works. Surprisingly, the full red legs didn't bother me on the figure. 

There is lots of articulation so plenty of poses are possible. 

I really appreciate the clear flying stand that you can pose her in as well.

Christmas Gift #1: Gulliver Supergirl Figurine

I am like a big kid around Christmas time and nothing makes me giddy like a great present. When it is a Supergirl related gift I am even giddier. And when it is a Supergirl item I have never heard of before, I am at my giddiest.

So imagine how tickled I was when I got this small Supergirl figure from my middle daughter as a gift. 

It is very cool, about 2 inches tall and well sculpted. 

But I honestly had no idea where it was from. And the auction she won it from had few details. 

So a 'new to me' Supergirl item in my possession?? Best Christmas ever.

Coles Super Hero Builder Supergirl Figurine

One thing that I have been truly amazed at is the generosity and camaraderie of the comic book community I am part of. From trades to packages of comics to sketches, I have been on the receiving end of too many presents to count. And I do my best to reciprocate.

Last week, I received an envelope from Australia from good friends Mike Garvey and Paul Hicks from the 'Waiting For Doom' podcast. Inside was a Coles Super Hero Builders Supergirl figure.

I had never heard of these or seen these. Are these even around here in the States?

But it is the cutest little thing and a wonderful addition to my Supergirl collection!

It stands maybe 2 inches tall and is this tiny chibi looking Kara, all bold and ready for action. 

I have a section of the shrine for mini-figures and this will fit in perfectly there.

Thank goodness for YouTube because I was unable to put it together using my own brain power and needed to find a 'how to' video.

Thanks again to Mike and Paul for sending this my way. It was such a ray of sunshine during a rough week at work! It really is such a cute Supergirl!

Frank Cho Cover Girls Of The DCU Supergirl Statue

It has been quite some time since I have purchased anything for the Supergirl shrine I have. For one, I have no room on my current shelves for anything new. Plus, with the dismantling of DC Direct, it has felt like Supergirl merchandise has sort of slowed down. 

One item that has been on my radar for a while has been the DC Cover Girls statue designed by Frank Cho. I have always liked Cho's art. He doesn't draw Supergirl often so this had a lot of appeal.

This last June was something of a monumental one for me for a couple of reasons so I decided I needed a little gift to myself. And when I saw the statue on sale for 50% off at Big Bad Toy Store, I jumped. 

I love this statue.

The box is pretty slick with close-ups of the statue as well as a full figure shot.

But I honestly don't get excited about the box. 

So onto the statue itself.

QPosket Supergirl

Every so often I am reminded just how great the community of comics friends I have made through social media is. I really feel like this group is such a positive group, wanting to share in each others' passions. 

And I am humbled about their generosity.

The latest friend to thank is Herman, on Twitter as @IntoWeird, who sent me this QPosket Supergirl figurine from the other side of the world. He saw it; he thought of me. He bought it and sent it on its way.

That is amazing and really shows the positive power of social media. 

This figure is completely adorable, in case you couldn't tell from the box.

Crisis On Infinite Earths Statue

Sometimes I feel lucky!

The statue commemorating Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 has been a sort of bucket list item for me. When this was issued in 1999,  I wasn't collecting things like this and the $125 price tag would have been extremely hefty for my resident salary. Still, there is no doubt this is a lovely statue by Tim Bruckner, capturing the famous George Perez cover.

But since I am a little older and have a Supergirl shrine, I have had my eye out for this in the wild.

I rarely see it at cons. And when I do, it usually is selling for more than twice the original price. So I usually defer buying. And then, as I leave the con with spending money in my pocket, I regret not splurging.

So imagine my surprise when I walked into my comic store and saw this statue, mint in box, with a price sticker for just the original $125!

And then imagine my even bigger shock when I saw a 'on sale 50% off' post it on the box.

That's right, this statue was on sale for $62.50. 

So naturally, it became mine!

Supergirl Pin

2020 impacted just about everything in the comic world and my Supergirl Shrine collection wasn't immune. I have paid off a Supergirl statue at my comic store that hasn't been delivered or re-solicited. A Frank Cho statue was solicited by DC Direct. But then DC Direct closed up shop with the AT&T merger.

The only addition to the collection was a DC Superhero large mug which I stumbled upon at HomeGoods. Supergirl is just a teeny part of it and it is in my cupboard, not in the Shrine. Heck, I use if for cereal.

Would 2020 be a year when I wouldn't add anything?

The answer is no! 

I get by with a little help from my friends.

Russell Burbage, founder and caretaker of the Legion of Super-Bloggers , friend, and all around good guy sent me this Supergirl pin just before the new year came around.

It's just the best little thing. I like that it is the Rebirth costume!

I can't thank him enough. 

But the big question in my mind was what do I do with it? Pin it to my white coat at the hospital?

DC Comics Mug

It has been a while since I found something with Supergirl on it to buy for the Shrine or personal use.

Let's face it, 2020 hasn't been a lot of fun!

So imagine my surprise when I stumbled on this pretty sweet oversized DC mug in my travels, and for a mere $6 American!

There are a ton of tiny head shots of many characters including Supergirl so this was a no brainer.

I am of two minds with its usage though.

It is the perfect 'three cups of coffee in one' sized mug for those overwhelming caffeine needs. But I often find the coffee has gone cold by the time you reach the bottom.

It also is a nice size for portable cereal eating, for the couch or the balcony. I most likely will use it for that purpose.

But to be honest, they had me with the inclusion of Supergirl on the mug.

Every so often you need to spoil yourself. This mug made me happy. And I was glad to get something new with Supergirl on it.

The Shrine Redux

When does a residence become a home?

Well, after being in my new place for 3 months the time was right to establish a place for the Supergirl shrine.

That also meant deciding that this book shelf, initially meant for trades, would be repurposed.

The open top means that larger statues have room to breathe a bit.

And the lower shelves have a lot of space meaning there is room for more stuff!

There isn't much rhyme or reason here. I did my best to put pieces of similar costumes together. But spacing and size made it more difficult here than at the old site.

Anyways, I am pretty pleased with how this turned out.

And having the Shrine rebuilt definitely makes this place more of a home.

Supergirl Best Of 2019: Non-Comic Stuff

Hi all!

Hard to believe but I am about to embark on my 11th end of year analysis of all things Supergirl at this site! I have been doing this for some time! As always I can't thank the audience that comes here enough! Without the interaction on the site, this would be a dull business. I have made so many friends here. Thanks again!

In a bit of housekeeping, I'll just say that 2019 has been a bit tumultuous for me personally n case folks didn't notice the blip in social media presence in October and November. But things are looking up. I am in a better place mentally as I transition to a single life. So thanks for sticking with me and for all the well wishes that came my way as I hinted at the upheaval on Twitter and here.

Anyways, we are here to look back at the year for Supergirl and as usual I will start with a look back at the non-comic happenings for our favorite Girl of Steel. Tomorrow I'll give my Honorable Mentions for the 2019 best comic moments. And then on New Year's day I'll post my Top Ten 2019 best comic moments.

Overall, 2019 was another good year for Supergirl and from a non-comic viewpoint, it starts with the show.

In the beginning of 2019, we saw the end of the fourth season of the show. While the season started a bit shakily, it really stuck the landing. By bringing in an incredible Lex Luthor, somehow played to full intensity by Jon Cryer, the whole season ended with a whirlwind of activity and energy.

The slogging plotlines of Agent Liberty and Red Daughter all rolled into each other in great ways. We had wonderful flashback episodes looking into tying the events of the season together coherently. And, of course, the exclamation point was Lena shooting Lex in the chest who then revealed Kara's secret identity.

I mean it, the beginning part of the season four seemed like it was walking through molasses. But the last 5 episode just exploded. So nothing to complain about there.

Injustice 2 Supergirl Figure

 I didn't collect all of the Injustice 2.

The issues I did get showcased a pretty heroic Supergirl, no surprise given that it was written by Tom Taylor who wrote the All New Wolverine book so wonderfully.

So when I saw a mini-figure of the Injustice 2 Supergirl on sale at my comic store, I couldn't resist.

It comes with a couple of extras - an angry head and some different hands. And it is a marvel of design with plenty of places of articulation for near limitless posing.

 The back of the box shows that posing nicely. How I wish there was some way I could both pose and display the figure in that flying pose! Pretty slick!

Supergirl 1970’s Slurpee Cup

One of the pieces that has eluded me over time had been the Supergirl 7-11 Slurpee cup from the 1970s.

Now I know that things like this are available on line, via EBay, etc.

But there is something about finding things in the wild that makes the hunt so much more delicious.

So imagine my surprise when last week I walked into my comic store and saw they had acquired a massive Slurpee cup collection. And front and center in the the display was the Supergirl cup.

And yes ... it is now mine.

This was definitely the style guide, corner of the cover, stock art pose for the Supergirl of the time. I am not a big fan of the ballet slippers. But this will work!

And, while not in the best condition, it is basically intact. So I'll take it!

Artgerm Supergirl Statue

The shrine got a little bit bigger this week when the Artgerm Supergirl statue finally arrived at the store.

This is a really beautiful piece. It seems to veer near cheesecake. But there is something also wholesome and angelic about it that really makes it a wonderful addition to my collection.

Standing pretty tall on a metal post, giving the illusion of flying, this is a DCAU Supergirl, or a latter half PAD Supergirl depending on your viewpoint. But whatever continuity it is gorgeous.

And the sculpt itself is solid with great details

And how great is it that it truly mirrors the cover of Supergirl #19!

I love when things hearken back to the comics.

DC Essentials Action Figure

DC Collectibles just released their DC Essentials line, a highly articulated set of action figures that really let's you pose the figure in many different ways. Supergirl made the cut and was one of the first figures in the line.

This is a DC Rebirth costumed Supergirl and I really think it is a beautiful rendition of that costume. I am a sucker for the pleated skirt look for the 'blue shirt, red skirt' combo.

And, not that I dwell on these things, it comes in a handsome box with nice iconography and dress.

The back of the box shows the other figures in the line, some in more dynamic poses than others. The text discusses the articulation and says you can place Supergirl 'in flight, in fight, or just being super'. Nice little paragraph.
