Review: Superman Unlimited #15

The Kingdom Of Zod is about to explode onto the Superman Family which means the Reign of the Superboy stories need to end. And so we get Superman Unlimited #15 which sprints to the ending of the Tomorrow Man story, bringing about events and changes and deus ex machinas to basically get us back to where we at the beginning of the story.

Truly, a lot of stuff happens here. Somehow Kryptonite self-replicates! It has been weaponized by El Caldero for some reason! Lana is changed! Kryptonite is now harmful to humans! Txyz (remember him) does some tomfoolery! Batman has a one-time trick!  And Superboy ... that is Ultra Boy ... that is E3 Superboy is gone. It all felt a bit too fast. There are too many things that come out of nowhere. But here we are.

There are zero complaints about the art though. Lucas Meyer is thriving on this book. We get battles. We get the supermobile! We get energy crackles and brutal punches. It is all so beautiful. Glad he is here!

On to the book. Expect some nit-picking.

Last issue we saw Steel experiment on some Green K only to have it wildly replicate like the crystals in the Superman movies. Why is that happening? Who knows? Why would El Caldero, who has vaulted in world power because of the Green K cache they have, want there to be more Green K (thus weakening them)? Who knows?

But on top of that, young 'Jon' has been revealed to be the Earth 3 son of Ultraman. And he isn't happy with any of the things that are going on, attacking our Jon amd generally being a bad boy.

Somehow the Kryptonite has effected Lana in her Superwoman form. She is now a sort of Kryptonite woman.  Which in some ways is helpful because she can try to absorb the Green K radiation before it harms the humans.

Is Green K radiation harmful to humans in this 'excess Green K' storyline? I thought Slott said people are wearing it as jewelery. People have it as bullets. Would they be using them this way if it was harmful?

As I have said, I am a bit through with this 'Green K Evermore' arc so glad it seems to coming to an end with the Zod one.

Love Meyer's art here!

The Green K seems to be growing exponentially to the point it might destroy the town.

So Lois calls for the Supermobile so she can fly interference and save people. Krypto joins in.

Why can Krypto fly around when Green K is everywhere and not seem effected? Who knows.

Pretty cool for Pa to enact the old ways to get people to safety.

There is a lot of running around and fighting. And then Batman and Damian come around.

You might recall that Damian sort of knew all along that this wasn't a time-displaced young Jon. And he decides to show his displeasure by slugging E3 Jon with blue K energy gloves.

Does Blue K hurt E3 people? In comics?

New to me so please correct me if I am wrong.

Love this splash by Meyer. You feel this left hook!  And you feel Damian's anger too.

Of course, the Green K is growing quickly.

Luckily Batman has a one-time, can't be replicated, radiation cloud that can turn Green K to Blue.

Well that certainly came out of nowhere. And of course, it can never be replicated so we won't have to think about it again.

In fact, it doesn't even play a huge part in the story so why even put something like this in the book. For some reason this 'I have great tech that could change everything that no one has heard I am working on and dang it can't be made again' moment pulled me out of the story.

Now Evil Jon has been basically evil throughout this issue, fighting like mad.

But somehow our Jon is able to break through and remind him that he is a 'good guy'.

So this Jon, who is powered up by Green K, snatches it all up and throws it into space, old school style.

And just like that the crisis is over.

I suppose I should think it is great that our Jon inspired this Jon after the mini-reign of terror. I suppose I should be impressed that this Jon was able to put gather all the green K and get rid of it.

But it just happened so fast, as if the page count dictated the ending more than the story.

But now what to do about it.

Txyz (remember him) comes back saying he has been enjoying seeing the Jon/Jon shenanigans. He pulled out evil Jon as a joke.

But now he offers our Jon a true choice. Pull himself out of time and rescue his own childhood? Or again have saved evil Jon from the torture?

Pretty noble of Jon to be happy with who he is and save the younger Jon.

Love that last panel and the emotion Meyer puts on our Jon's face. It's a sort of mix of conflicted and resolute in his decision.

Too bad DC didn't make the tough but good choice of de-aging Jon.

What to do with Ultra Boy?

Seems like Lois is ready to take the kid in and raise him. Why not? I mean, they already took in Osul and Otho.

However, Txyz let's Jon's true mother Superwoman arrive and corral him up.

Goodbye E3 Jon, we hardly knew ye.

Txyz does remind me that Ultraman is dead so I guess this Jon won't be thrown back into a volcano.

We do get a wrap-up.

Lana is still Green K'd up.
Damian says this growing Green K was a weapon.

Anyways, everyone knew Tomorrow Man was our Jon so he unmasks. Lois tells him that he can be his own man and decide his own life course. And just like that it is all over.

I think when Slott is allowed to write done-in-one Elsewhen Superman stories he shines. When immersed in current continuity, he seems to slip a bit. But I love Lucas Meyer's art.
