I was the guest star with Siskoid over on The Fire And Water Podcast network on his show 'Who's Editing?' On this show, the guest and Siskoid create a line of DC books but only from the heroes (and 1 villain) within an issue of the famous DC Who's Who book from the eighties.

I got the sixth issue which includes many Doctor characters.

For this show for the characters I picked a creative team of writer, artist, and variant cover artist. I made an elevator pitch for the book and then mapped out the overall idea.

What will I do with Dr. Occult? Who did I have Sterling Gates write? Who will Chris Samnee draw? Which villain gets their own book?

I like getting the creative juices flowing and this was a blast for me. If you want to see how my comic mind works, this is a good place to start!

Supergirl Best Of 2019: Non-Comic Stuff

Hi all!

Hard to believe but I am about to embark on my 11th end of year analysis of all things Supergirl at this site! I have been doing this for some time! As always I can't thank the audience that comes here enough! Without the interaction on the site, this would be a dull business. I have made so many friends here. Thanks again!

In a bit of housekeeping, I'll just say that 2019 has been a bit tumultuous for me personally n case folks didn't notice the blip in social media presence in October and November. But things are looking up. I am in a better place mentally as I transition to a single life. So thanks for sticking with me and for all the well wishes that came my way as I hinted at the upheaval on Twitter and here.

Anyways, we are here to look back at the year for Supergirl and as usual I will start with a look back at the non-comic happenings for our favorite Girl of Steel. Tomorrow I'll give my Honorable Mentions for the 2019 best comic moments. And then on New Year's day I'll post my Top Ten 2019 best comic moments.

Overall, 2019 was another good year for Supergirl and from a non-comic viewpoint, it starts with the show.

In the beginning of 2019, we saw the end of the fourth season of the show. While the season started a bit shakily, it really stuck the landing. By bringing in an incredible Lex Luthor, somehow played to full intensity by Jon Cryer, the whole season ended with a whirlwind of activity and energy.

The slogging plotlines of Agent Liberty and Red Daughter all rolled into each other in great ways. We had wonderful flashback episodes looking into tying the events of the season together coherently. And, of course, the exclamation point was Lena shooting Lex in the chest who then revealed Kara's secret identity.

I mean it, the beginning part of the season four seemed like it was walking through molasses. But the last 5 episode just exploded. So nothing to complain about there.

Con Prep: Boston Fan Expo

We are approaching Con Season which means that time is growing short for me to get my preparation done including thoughts about commissions, signatures, and possible gifts for friends.

That means preparing for Fan Expo Boston right after Terrificon. Here is a link to the con:

Now unlike Terrificon, this is more of a Pop Culture convention with a corner for comics creators. Born from the ashes of the dearly departed Boston Comic Con, Fan Expo is about a true cross-section of popular culture. As a result, there isn't as much heavy lifting from a comic point of view.

That said, I am very much looking forward to this convention because it is also a cross-section of the comic community on-line I am part of. Rob, Shag,and Ryan from the Fire and Water Podcast Network will be there. Diabolu Frank from the Rolled Spine Network. Darrin and Ruth Sutherland from the R and D Network, Derek Crabbe, Keith G. Baker, and who knows how many more folks I hang out with in social media will be there. Hoping we head out to Karaoke!

Anyways, that means if any of you are going, we should try to meet and greet!

It was great to hear Shag and Rob's thoughts on the show. As a Supergirl fan, I worry about an inherent bias so it was great to hear them talk about how much they like the show. And the extra special guest star at the end of the show was the perfect capstone, reminding me how universal a Kara show can be.

Fire & Water Podcast Guest Appearance

I have been a fan of the Fire and Water Podcast for a while now, listening to Rob (of Aquaman Shrine fame)  and Shag (of Firestorm Fan fame) discuss Aquaman, Firestorm, Who's Who comics, and comics in general. That show is sort of my Monday morning ritual, listening to them banter while I sip my coffee in my office and start my work week.

So I was thrilled to be asked by Rob to appear on the show as a guest. Today Fire and Water Episode 140 drops, discussing a story from 1989's Christmas with the Super-Heroes #2, a story written by Alan Brennert and drawn by Dick Giordano. This is the famous Deadman story 'Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot', a story with a famous secret guest star.

I can't t thank Rob enough for asking me on to talk about this story and Supergirl in general.

This is a pretty famous (or infamous) story that I have already covered on this blog way back in 2010 here.

This book came out about a year after the Matrix Supergirl was introduced into the DCU. It also was a couple of months after we saw Matrix, shapeshifted into Superman, go insane and flee to outer space to try to find herself.

This was really a tough time for Supergirl fans. Not only had the original Supergirl been removed from continuity, completely forgotten but Matrix had come on board, gone nuts, and left. We had (at least at this point) a true imposter in the role. And it was going to get worse before it got better.

So this story was a complete treasure for Kara fans.

In the podcast, I talk about how I insert this panel into lectures I give trainees at the hospital (medical students, residents, and fellows). I, of course, insert trademarks and copyright information at the bottom of the slide.

I put this in lectures that are early in the academic year, when the trainees are realizing how hard their job is going to be and need a little inspiration. They are often fatigued and feeling unrecognized. So this panel is perfect.
