Supergirl And Streaky Statue

Last week, I showcased my Supergirl shrine in all its glory on a set of new shelves.

New shelves mean more space. And lucky for me, because Iron Studios is coming out with a fantastic Supergirl and Streaky statue in the second quarter of 2025. You can take a closer look here: https://www.bigbadtoystore.com/Product/VariationDetails/289507?o=4

This one is just beautiful and therefore will probably find its way into my collection despite the high price.

For one, it has Streaky. How could I say no.

Second, the costume is a version of my most favorite: red skirt, blue shirt. Heck even the sleeves are oversized, akin to the pointed end version I like best.

But the most important thing is the vibe you get from this. Supergirl happily sitting on a tower top, smiling and happy, enjoying some fun with her kitty cat. Wonderful.

Frank Cho Cover Girls Of The DCU Supergirl Statue

It has been quite some time since I have purchased anything for the Supergirl shrine I have. For one, I have no room on my current shelves for anything new. Plus, with the dismantling of DC Direct, it has felt like Supergirl merchandise has sort of slowed down. 

One item that has been on my radar for a while has been the DC Cover Girls statue designed by Frank Cho. I have always liked Cho's art. He doesn't draw Supergirl often so this had a lot of appeal.

This last June was something of a monumental one for me for a couple of reasons so I decided I needed a little gift to myself. And when I saw the statue on sale for 50% off at Big Bad Toy Store, I jumped. 

I love this statue.

The box is pretty slick with close-ups of the statue as well as a full figure shot.

But I honestly don't get excited about the box. 

So onto the statue itself.

Crisis On Infinite Earths Statue

Sometimes I feel lucky!

The statue commemorating Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 has been a sort of bucket list item for me. When this was issued in 1999,  I wasn't collecting things like this and the $125 price tag would have been extremely hefty for my resident salary. Still, there is no doubt this is a lovely statue by Tim Bruckner, capturing the famous George Perez cover.

But since I am a little older and have a Supergirl shrine, I have had my eye out for this in the wild.

I rarely see it at cons. And when I do, it usually is selling for more than twice the original price. So I usually defer buying. And then, as I leave the con with spending money in my pocket, I regret not splurging.

So imagine my surprise when I walked into my comic store and saw this statue, mint in box, with a price sticker for just the original $125!

And then imagine my even bigger shock when I saw a 'on sale 50% off' post it on the box.

That's right, this statue was on sale for $62.50. 

So naturally, it became mine!

Chrissie Zullo Supergirl Statue

DC Comics Collectibles has come out with a set of statues based on Chrissie Zull's art.

I have been a fan of Zullo for a long time and have seen her art evolve over time. I really like her current style so I couldn't say no.

This statue is a pure delight. It is cute. It is bright. It sort of pops on the shelf. I love the colors in her eyes. And adding a snarky looking Streaky is perfect.

From the hands on hip, to the smile, to the sideways look, to the proportions like the chunky boot, this whole thing works for me. Throw in a pointy belt and oversized sleeves and you have my perfect costume.

Let's take a closer look.

Artgerm Supergirl Statue

The shrine got a little bit bigger this week when the Artgerm Supergirl statue finally arrived at the store.

This is a really beautiful piece. It seems to veer near cheesecake. But there is something also wholesome and angelic about it that really makes it a wonderful addition to my collection.

Standing pretty tall on a metal post, giving the illusion of flying, this is a DCAU Supergirl, or a latter half PAD Supergirl depending on your viewpoint. But whatever continuity it is gorgeous.

And the sculpt itself is solid with great details

And how great is it that it truly mirrors the cover of Supergirl #19!

I love when things hearken back to the comics.

Supergirl Gallery Diorama Statue

I recently purchased the DC Gallery Diorama figuring of Supergirl and added it to my collection.

I am usually a bit more reticent to buy merchandise of the Michael Turner, bare midriff costume as I often feel that that particular costume lends itself to cheesecake. That's not why I am a Supergirl fan. And on first blush, this statue with it's very low-riding skirt seems to veer into that territory.

But looking beyond the exposed hips the statue is quite nice. Ensconced in a bright package, this is an action shot of Supergirl emerging from an explosion or a star all while snapping chains that try to bind her.

So the overall subject matter is one of strength.

I am not a big reviewer of packaging but i am a bit confused by this.

Certainly the pastel blues and bright reds are eye catching. And the actual picture of the statue within showcases the things I like about it.

But it is odd that the illustration on the box is of the more current Rebirth Supergirl costume and more akin to her television version. Why not have a picture of the actual costume on the statue.

 And the text isn't my favorite either.

I am not a fan of the lonely Supergirl, reluctantly living on Earth, armed with her planet-splitting right hook. And while I think she is on a hero's journey, I don't know if she is struggling with her identity.

I suppose I am an old-timer who likes to believe that Supergirl is optimistic and bright, sees the best in people, is an extrovert and wants to help.

Okay, enough about the box. Let's get to the statue itself.

Supergirl Best of 2018: Non-Comic Stuff

Welcome to my standard look back at the last year in all things Supergirl.

As this site is *mostly* around the comic history of Supergirl, I will cover the top ten moments in comics over the next two days in separate posts.

But Supergirl seems to be everywhere these days so I like to take a look back at the other non-comic Supergirl stuff that happened in 2018.

We'll start with my personal stuff.

2018 was a very good year for my commissions collection as I was able to grab the 4 that I was aiming for. I also got one from a surprising source. And two more came my way through the generosity of friends.

At the Boston Fan Expo, I was aiming for Tyler Kirkham and Bob McLeod. It took a little bit of luck, but I landed both. The Kirkham one in particular is quite striking.

At Terrificon, my main convention in the con season, I was hoping to grab Kevin Nowlan and Ron Frenz. Again, it took some luck and a definite plan to hit Kevin Nowlan's table first but I was able to get both. I love the fact that I got to finally see the Kara from Superman Vs. Aliens in a Supergirl costume, even if it is only in my collection. Love that piece.

Finally at Rhode Island Comicon, I landed the unique Kevin Eastman Supergirl commission. That is just bananas.

But that wasn't all. I also got a wonderful Ron Randall piece thanks to the best couple on the internet the Sutherlands. I love that fresh-faced Supergirl piece. And The Irredeemable Shag sent me the Thom Zahler Brainiac 5/Supergirl pic above as well.

In 2018, my commission collection hit the century mark. Unreal.

At conventions and other venues, I also met a ton of creators and celebrities. This year's big fan moments included meeting Steve Orlando, John Byrne, Nowlan, Joe Giella, and Laura Vandervoort.

DC February Solicits

Let's just say when I saw the cover for Supergirl #27 I felt a bit deflated.

I have been covering this character for ten and a half years. I have seen her character go dark and get redeemed at least 4 times over that period. Four times ... that I can think of.

It seems like every so often, DC's upper echelon thinks that a 'dark Supergirl' is what is missing in the world. And every single time the take fails ... because THAT'S NOT SUPERGIRL ... and someone has to come in and smooth things over. Sterling Gates, Tony Bedard, Mike Johnson and K. Perkins, even Steve Orlando and Jody Houser all have needed to bring Kara back from the dark and have her embrace Earth as home and swear to defend it.

So, of course, after Orlando and Houser have Supergirl back on the straight and narrow, DC pulls the plug and has Marc Andreyko send Supergirl away from Earth, away from her supporting cast, away from that role of hero, and sent her into space. From the get-go, I was nervous. But Perkins sent her to Crucible and that worked out so I took a breath.

Then I saw the first cover and read the issues. Gritty Kara, wielding a battle axe, on a path of vengeance and swearing she 'isn't Kal' ... I was worried we were back to Dark Supergirl.

I didn't know how good I had it back then.

Because now we have this Supergirl, de-powered, wielding a Liefeldian gun, shooting at some unknown foe while screaming in battle.

THAT'S NOT SUPERGIRL!

Look, you want to read Scarlet, Black Widow, or any of the other gritty female-led books with gun-toting heroes, go ahead! Heck, *I* read some of those books.

But who wants to read a Supergirl book with a powerless teenage girl shooting a gun?

Maybe this will all turn out fine. Maybe it's a stun gun.

But I am not happy. Supergirl shouldn't be powerless. Supergirl shouldn't be mowing people down with a rifle. So I know that Supergirl shouldn't be powerless AND be mowing people down with a rifle.

January 2019 Solicits

The DC solicits for January were released this week and it looks to be an interesting 5 week month. Here is a link to the entire list:

One of the most interesting sites was the return of the 'Prestige Format' in a number of books released in the 5th week. I'm a huge fan of that format. Unfortunately, the 2018 price tag of $8-10 bucks makes the 'impulse buy' of them unlikely. The hook or idea has to be huge to prompt the buy. Is something like The Other History of the DC Universe, mini-series looking at characters who have felt different or prejudiced against, bold enough to bring me in? Or am I more likely to get the silly sounding anthology Mysteries Of Love In Space?

Another fascinating piece is the return of Young Justice, spotlighted below. But we are here for the super-books. On to those issues.

I can't help but notice that Artgerm is back on the variant cover. Remember everyone, this is a business. If Artgerm on the book lifts the sales by 10K, maybe they should keep him on variants.

Kevin Maguire is on art again. I don't know how the Shaner/Maguire duties are being divvied up.

And I like the sound of the plot as well. If Supergirl is out in space, you may as well bring in the more cosmic stuff. Omega Men? Why not? Give me some Primus and Tigorr please!

In fact, why not have a crossover with JL Odyssey!

Tweeterhead Maquette Statue

Every so often I make a purchase that even I have to question.

A while back Tweeterhead announced the Supergirl Limited Edition Maquette statue, a glorious piece of a smiling Kara, sporting her 1970's hot pants costume and sporting a wide smile. It simply spoke to me from my earliest Supergirl memories, a happy, optimistic young woman. The hard tug of nostalgia strings is a difficult thing to resist and so I pre-ordered. Over the months, a slowly paid down the tab at my comic store, taking advantage of store reward cards and gift certificates to ease the pain.

Finally last week it arrived.

And it is glorious. And huge. And beautiful. And wonderful. And gigantic.

In fact, it is so big that it simply doesn't fit in the home collection. So instead it graces my work office.

And it all starts with the gorgeous box it comes in.

Supergirl SDCC Wrap-Up

While my con season is right around the corner, the monolith of conventions Sand Diego Comic Con is in our rear view mirror. This convention, while on my bucket list, is really more about pop culture and mega-media approaches to our beloved characters. The big screen and small screen celebrities descend and give us all the sneak peeks.

Now there is a ton of coverage everywhere for you to deep dive. I'm going to just give some high level gut reactions to stuff that I saw. And clearly the biggest news to drop was about Season 4 of the Supergirl show. And I am both interested and a little worried. Bear with me. We'll start out with the official trailer.

More Supergirl Stuff!

As San Diego comic con approaches and Supergirl continues an unprecedented run of public interest, the character's merchandise list grows longer. I have to say that this particular run of announcements is very compelling to me as I try to figure out how to get it all.

First off is the blu-ray version of her movie from 1984. Here is a link for details:

This special edition of Supergirl presents the film's International Cut, remastered in High Definition for Blu-ray, along with the rare Director's Cut on a bonus DVD.

As most know, it has been years since I have seen the movie. I have always wanted to review it here on the site. Now it looks like I'll finally get the chance. I have only heard rumblings of the director's cut version so I can't wait to see that.

I am just amazed that the interest in Kara Zor-El has reached such a peak that the campy movie from the 80's is getting such a slick re-issuing. I can't wait to see Helen Slater gracefully flying and saying she doesn't scare easily again.

But wait there's more.

Joelle Jones Supergirl statue

The Shrine got a little bigger recently when the DC Cover Girls Joelle Jones Supergirl statue came in.

It is an absolutely gorgeous statue.

Like mind-blowingly beautiful. Not surprising given it is based on Joelle Jones art, someone whose work I have loved for a long time.

There is something that just says 'graceful' about this. From the faraway, serene expression to the holding out of the cape to the gentle leg positioning, this gives off the angelic, pure feel that Supergirl is sometimes known for.

It is really a great piece, one worth saving for if you have enough cash for just one Supergirl piece.

Kotobukiya ArtFX Statue

Seems like over the last year I preordered a number of Supergirl merchandise, slowly paying them down here and there. Oddly enough, two of those pieces have come in nearly at the same time. So after just showcasing the Icon Heroes statue for the shrine, I find myself featuring this Kotobukiya ArtFX statue.

This is a really fun statue. It’s based on the Melissa Benoist Supergirl. It is a very good likeness of her.

But this statue comes with three sets of arms so you can decide on the pose you like.

You can see the poses on the back of the box. Hands on hips? Arms down? Arms crossed?

It was hard to chose.

Icon Heroes Supergirl Statue

Last week the Icon Heroes Supergirl Collector Statue was delivered into my hands. I had ordered it when first solicited and had paid it off layaway style. So it was just handed to me ... almost like it was free!

It is a fantastic statue! If someone is looking for an affordable Supergirl piece of merchandise, one that celebrates the television show, I would highly recommend this one. It retails for $65 so it isn't cheap. But in the statue format, that is a decent price for something so wonderful.

It comes in a clean large box which highlights its dynamic nature nicely. This is Supergirl soaring into action!

The statue is just that, Supergirl flying into action in a classic pose.

Poised on a metal post, it gives the sense of Supergirl flying. And it is a very decent size for the price, soaring majestically.

And the sculpt is great. That sort of soulful look on the Supergirl's face is very evocative of Melissa Benoist. You get the sense she is on a mission.

Statues, Statues, Statues

In their continued effort to make me poor, DC and other companies continue to put out Supergirl merchandise. And in an odd cosmic convergence, a bunch of new statues have all been solicited or revealed within the last few days, many at San Diego Comic Con (and thanks to blog friend Firebird for passing on the photos). I probably won't get all of these. My poor wallet!

Supergirl Show Statue

The Shriner get a big edition recently when the Supergirl statue I ordered a while back finally came in.

And I literally mean big. This is a giant statue! And it is gorgeous.

It actually all started with the box. This is a very clean reason patient of this statue, with an upper close lock at a very solid sculpture depicting Melissa Benoist as Kara.

Joelle Jones Supergirl Statue

Over the weekend, news came out that artist extraordinaire Joelle Jones will be designing a series of DC Cover Girls statues. I am a big fan of Jones so this was great news for me. It looks like the first statue is going to be a classic Harley Quinn and it perfectly captures her zany, madcap fun.

There is a nice video where Jones talks about her approach to statue design and how 'gumption' and 'elbow grease' is what she needed to get where she wanted to. Here is a link:

And I was glad to hear that Supergirl is going to be one of the statues in the line. Jones is already linked to Kara with the Supergirl Being Super book. But I since I love Jones' style, I am glad we are getting this. And, thankfully, there are early process pics of what the statue could look like over on Comics Beat.

Toyfair 2017

News from the New York Toy Fair 2017 was released this last week and once again Supergirl has been well represented. As I have said for a while now, I am still a bit surprised to see Supergirl as popular as she is these days. It makes those lean years seem a distant memory.

Above you see the Supergirl Rebirth action figure which will be released some time this year. I think this is a great figure. I have always been a fan of the Rebirth  style as it has so many of the elements I look for in 'my' Supergirl costume. But throw in a heat vision head and multiple hands? True bonus! Can't wait for this one.

SDCC Femme Fatale Exclusive Statue

Every so often I get lucky.

Last year I saw the SDCC Exclusive DC Comics Femme Fatales JLU Supergirl statue. And I wanted it.

But SDCC is a pipe dream for me. I'll never get there. So I thought I'd never get my hands on this piece of Supergirl swag.

Somehow, recently, my comic book store got hold of one. They said that when the SDCC exclusives don't sell out that they are solicited to stores. Knowing Supergirl is my favorite character, they gave me first crack at buying the statue and even allowed me to pay off a bit at a time. Pretty cool of them.

The whole package is slick. The black box pops, showcasing the bright statue on the inside.
