Tonner Doll New 52 Supergirl

I have written about Tonner Dolls in the past. These are high-end, expensive true dolls that are made for display and not play. These aren't Barbie. They certainly aren't action figures. And they run just about $200.

I have to say, either this is a nice representation of the costume or I am becoming more accustomed to it. But it certainly looks nice here. I know it is a small thing, but the simply straight seam of the lower portion as opposed to the angular inclusion of the red shield just makes this a smoother design.

As much as I love adding to the shrine, this is a bit out of my league both in terms of price and format.

If anyone else does pull the trigger, let me know if it looks this nice in person!

Supergirl Tonner Dolls In 2009

We are only 2 weeks away from the release of DC Direct's Deluxe 1:6 Supergirl doll with Streaky accessory. I have already put down a sizeable down payment at my local comic book store and look forward to adding that figure to the shrine later this month.

I have talked about Tonner Dolls DC Stars collection before when they announced their SDCC 2008 exclusives. Here is the website link: http://www.tonnerdoll.com/dcstars.htm .

Tonner dolls seem to be aimed more for the hard core doll collector rather than comics fans who occasionally branch into the toy market. For those out there who crossover into both the comic and doll world, Tonner has announced their 2009 collection. Just like last year, Supergirl is featured.

Here is their Deluxe Supergirl character figure which looks like it is limited to 1000 and costs 'only' $199.99. Tonner's description is as follows.

Classic red and blue bodysuit with printed signature emblem and mini-skirt with 'gold' belt; includes matching zip-up faux leather boots, pantyhose, lustrous cape and display stand.

It is an interesting doll from a Supergirl point for view for a couple of reasons. It is based on the current Michael Turner costume. But a red skirt? And gold laced boots with big heels? Seems like the Tonner company took some liberties with the outfit. My guess is that the more detail oriented the figure, the more minutiae that is added, the more desirable it is to the doll efficianado. So adding actual laces to the boots probably upgrades the 'strength' of the collectible. The face and hair on the doll do seem quite lovely. But this is not going to find it's way in my collection.

And Tonner does variant dolls too! This 'Kara of Krypton' figure was part of Tonner's Women of Power series announced in late 2008. This one is exclusive to Tonnerdirect.com and is limited edition of 200. It's cost is a mere $159.99.

This could be any blonde (more platinum) tressed doll in a genie outfit. Although there is no description on the web site, I have read elsewhere the gold clasp of the top piece is the S-shield. I guess that makes this a Kara doll.

Certainly, I don't know any appearance in comics of this outfit.

For completeness sake, here is the standard DCStars Supergirl doll available for $124.99. Of course this is a Matrix-style uniform so this one is more appealing to me although still outside of my price range. I do like that the boots have no heels.


Here is the SDCC exclusive, limited to 200. This is called the Supergirl Phantom Zone variant and cost $139.99. Again, some fancy and intricate boots here.

And outfits are available too. Here is the Kryptonian Silver Casual outfit, retailing at $89.99.

If anyone out there is more of a doll collector, I do suggest you take a peek. There are some very nice figures available including some standout Wonder Woman dolls. I also thought they did fine renditions of Black Canary, Poison Ivy, and Hawkgirl.

Pointy Sleeves!

When DC first announced the SUPERGIRL 1:6 SCALE Deluxe Collector Figure I was thrilled.

The pictures released on DC Direct looked great ... and it even included Streaky! The one thing I couldn't tell from those promo photos was if the shirt had pointy sleeves, an absolute must for me.

Well, check out this photo sent to me by my buddy who is currently at the San Diego Comicon. While perusing the DC Direct booth, he saw the Supergirl Doll and snapped a shot. And there they are ... pointy sleeves!

The doll will be released on February 18, 2009 and costs $89.99. I have already started my layaway plan at my local comic book store. $20 down, $69.99 to go.

Supergirl Tonner Doll Exclusive at San Diego Comicon 2008

Look at what has just been announced as one of the ultra-exclusive goodies at the San Diego Comicon. A Tonner doll called the Phantom Zone Supergirl.

Here is the official blurb:

Phantom Zone Supergirl is limited to only 200 pieces (certificate of authenticity included) and will sell for $139.99. At sixteen inches tall, this bullet proof beauty comes decked in all white, trimmed in gold. Her cross-over midriff top is emblazoned with her gold super 'S' and she has white, thigh-high boots and gold laces. Because TONNERDirect are concerned with your convenience, the 28 eyelets are already laced (they zip from the back)! Aglets not included.

Okay, I have never even seen this sort of outfit on Kara, and I even have those nutty 70’s Adventure Comic issues where she seemed to have a new outfit every other issue. Nor do I understand why this is called the Phantom Zone Supergirl. Why would Kara dress like one of Captain Kirk’s flings only to be sent to a wraith-like existence for eternity?

Anyways, I guess we should be happy that it is Supergirl. Any publicity is good publicity, right?

I have never been to the San Diego Comicon being an East coast kind of guy. I can only imagine how much fun it is. And I suppose it is good I am not going because I might actually drop the cash for this.

As for Tonner dolls, they look great but are too expensive. They seem to be geared more for doll collectors than comics collectors, although there is some cross-pollination. They do have DCStars line that includes a very nice Supergirl doll that costs $124.99.


This is a very beautiful figure in my favorite version of Supergirl’s costume, the Matrix costume. It is close to perfect, but no pointy sleeve ends. I also think the blue is a little too light here, but the S-shield is a nice size.

You also can buy a ‘Krypton dress’ to put the doll in for *choke* $89.99.

It sort of looks like a cross between the Kryptonian garb they wore in the Richard Donner Superman movie and the ‘futuristic outfit’ Dr. Evil put Elizabeth Hurley in at the end of “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.”

But this is what got me. For *gasp* $69.99, you can get a ‘Casual Identity’ outfit for a Linda Danvers doll that is not yet available. They are making a LINDA DANVERS doll!!!



Am I a huge geek because I may have been more intrigued/excited about the Linda doll than the Supergirl doll?
