War Of The Supermen

Well, it has been hinted at in interviews, at conventions, and even in comics. There will be a war between Earth and New Krypton. That will be next summer's big event.

Now we have confirmation!

Over on The Source, a preview picture of War of the Supermen #0, to be released on Free Comic Book Day, has been released with a little publicity note.

Here is the link:
http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2009/12/08/dcu-in-2010-the-war-of-the-supermen-begins/

And here is the blurb:

Superman has left Earth in the hands of Nightwing, Flamebird, Mon-El and the Guardian.

The tensions between Earth and New Krypton are slowly rising. The winds of war are stirring.

As our very own Dan DiDio has teased numerous times, 2010 is going to be a huge year for Superman. But just what is going on has not been revealed.

Until now. Welcome to the WAR OF THE SUPERMEN.

This lovely piece of J.G. Jones artwork is the cover to WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0, which will hit stands 5/1/10, as the DCU FREE COMIC BOOK DAY title, and will kick off an event that is sure to change Superman’s status quo.

What more can we say? Not a lot — we can tell you writer James Robinson and artist Eddy Barrows will be taking point on the issue — but we did manage to rope SUPERMAN
Group Editor Matt Idelson for a quick tease about what’s to come.

Take it away, Matt:
“WAR OF THE SUPERMEN is the culmination of literally years of stories in the Super-books, all building to a destructive conflict which can have no victors. This Free Comic Book Day #0 issue is going to show the readers that no cows are sacred, and that they don’t want to miss this event.”

What a great way to promote the series! Blackest Night kicked off on Free Comic Book Day this year.

I don't know if I am thrilled with the J.G. Jones cover. The expressions seem a little off. But it looks like Superman has some powerful allies on his side. We see Supergirl, Mon-El, Nightwing, Flamebird, and members of the Red Shard flanking him. Interesting that I only see military guild members here. There are no Artist Guild members, Science Guild members, Labor guilders, or Religious Guild members.

So what do people think? Are you excited for this?

I am glad to see the Super-family be the focus of the DCU. And, to be honest, I am ready for the other 100,000 Kryptonians to find some place else to be. So I am cautiously optimistic.

Looks like Kousin Kara will choose to fight for Earth. Wonder how that'll go over with her Momster?

:D

Oh good Lord! That's the official visual cover they're choosing to use? o_0 It looks like DC rushed J.G. Jones something chronic on it and just looks very unfinished in the end. (Just what is Supergirl's face meant to be conveying to the reader for one?)

Hmm War of The Supermen's "New Krypton Vs. Earth" war themed mega event doesn't quite feel fair, for on one hand you have such an highly advanced alien race that have not only their light years ahead high tech weaponry but also biologically induced super powers brought on by a yellow sun on their side while the only things the residents of Earth have to fall back on are extremely low tech weaponry and some Superheroes who barely meet the level of that of an actual Kryptonian--so. :/

Regardless, I'll still be buying it for that "#0 issue is going to show the readers that no cows are sacred" line has me extremely worried about what might become of Supergirl.

Yeah ... if that's Kal's Earth team I am not surprised that Alura isn't there.

I am also a little surprised that so many Military Guilders joined him.

Well that has been my feeling all along. That 100,000 Kryptonians just staggers the mindfrom a power perspective. UNfortunately it has left the wrietrs in a bind that they have had to even the odds a bit ... thus Satrunians are tougher, Thangarians are tougher, Black Lightning can hurt Kryptonians, and weapons are plentiful.

Oh I'm dreading this, enough Superman Family crossovers already. We already can see that the recent Patriot borefest hurt sales, and now this, a lengthy update of an ancient LSH story?

It is such a double edged sword.

I agree I want some Kara-centric stories. But I know that stories like this will bring in new readers.

I think the problem here is that there has been almost all crossover at the title. Thats why I am looking forward to the next couple of issues.

God I hope Kara gets some standalone stories of her own. It feels like it's been so long since we had a simple Supergirl story. I like all the crossovers, but I would like a just Kara arc soon.
