Review: Wednesday Comics #5

Another week, another excellent issue of Wednesday Comics. After five issues, I clearly have my favorites, my next favorites, and the ones I read because they are there. It really *is* just like the Sunday comics! I mean I used to read Mary Worth just because it was situated between Shoe and Spiderman!

Supergirl continues to be the strip that is the most fun in the series. This week's opening panel shows an aggravated Supergirl firing a deadpan stare at Streaky. And look at Streaky giving it right back! I love these set-up images!

Last week, Krypto seemed back to normal.

This week he has back to being crazy. Despite being told by Supergirl to help her land the plummeting plane that Streaky has vandalized, the super-dog instead decides to 'surf' on the wing.

Luckily Supergirl is able to stabilize the plane and carry it to safety all on her own. It was great to see Kara overcome this sudden setback and succeed heroically.

The strip ends with both super-pets suddenly back to being cute and cuddly leading an exasperated Kara to decide they need a trip to the vet. Look at Streaky purr as she rubs against Kara's leg. (This Streaky is a girl; the Silver age Super-cat was all boy.)

So what is causing the mood swings? Red Kryptonite? Psycho Pirate? Grodd? Any other guesses?

The script and art are so wonderfully whimsical! I can't get enough of this Supergirl. Of course, I have a fondness for Streaky so I was bound to love this.

As for the rest of Wednesday Comics, Kamandi, Strange Adventures, and Green Lantern are the strips I look forward to the most. All three are very different in style and tone and all three have consistently been great.

The strip I think that has improved over the weeks is the Azzarello/Risso Batman. This week's chapter builds off last week's steamy dinner scene. Looks like even Batman can get smitten!

Editorial slip-ups irk me so I wasn't too happy to see one in the Metamorpho strip. Rex says a line clearly meant to be said by Urania Blackwell. Unfortunately, that mistake made it tough to enjoy the strip.

The strips which have underwhelmed are the Superman and Wonder Woman strips. I just don't seem to 'get' the Wonder Woman strip.

Overall grade (Supergirl): A+
Overall grade (Wednesday comics): B+

That stare has me killed. I could emote entirely by showing these panels on cards.

The first panel and the last are hi-freakin'-larious in extremis, great emotional content. As I said, Supergirl is never more interesting than when she is vexed rather than simply endangered.
I wonder what Doctor Kara will choose? Is there a "Super-Vet" out there? OR will she make do with Dr. Fate, Dr. Light....The Martian Manhunter mayhap?

I was also pissed off by the Metamorpho error. Are they in that much of a rush to get it out? Or was it all written weeks ago and is just waiting to be printed/? I'm not sure how these things work.

Too true.

I think they set up the overall feeling of the strip wonderfully.

I was wondering the same thing.

And where does Aquaman fit in all this?

Things like that bother me because it is someone's job to make sure the balloons match up to the right character.

As for the work flow I think it is a strip by strip basis. Apparently some people are still finishing the later strips. But I also read somewhere that Kyle Baker turned in all his Hawkman strips a month after he got the job.

A month? Holy crap. Good work ethic.

Can't wait to see who Kara ends up taking the super pets too this week, heh. :)
