DC Solicits: September 2024

The Superman books right now are flying high with House of Brainiac. Which makes me wonder how much Absolute Power will drain some of the energy out of the books. The solicits for September are out and I just don't find much in the current continuity to be too thrilling.

Here is a link to the full solicits:
https://www.gamesradar.com/comics/dc-comics/dc-comics-september-2024-solicitations-covers/

After reading the solicits, I don't think I'll be getting the main Absolute Power series or the tie-ins.  So here are the Super books.

SUPERMAN #18
Written by JOSHUA WILLIAMSON
Art and cover by JAMAL CAMPBELL
Variant covers by FRANCESCO MATTINA, W. SCOTT FORBES, and SWEENEY BOO 1:25 variant cover by AL BARRIONUEVO
Artist Spotlight variant cover by NICOLA SCOTT

ABSOLUTE POWER TIE-IN!

Waller has the powerless heroes of the DC Universe on the ropes! Can the powerless Superman and Zatanna find the mystical map to the Dark Roads in time to get some major back-up?!

Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Mercy, Jimmy, and Silver Banshee are on the run from the superpowered Amazos but find themselves pulled into a battle for the soul of Metropolis! Don’t miss the shocking cliffhanger that impacts the future of the Superman titles!

A cliffhanger that impacts the future of the super titles? Let the guesses abound! My money is on 'Jimmy dies'.

I like Zatanna so maybe this will be fun. Can't wait to see Jamal Campbell's take on her.

THE CHALLENGES CONTINUE as Superman finds himself an UNWILLING GLADIATOR in a war of a thousand worlds! Either he completes the challenges, or we lose the cities of Paris, Chicago, and KANDOR! Join us on a wild tale of adventure and inter-galactic WAR!
Plus, is there a way for Lois and Clark to keep working together without compromising their values--and their relationship?

Great Nicola Scott cover.

We just had the Warworld Saga so I wonder how much I will like Simone doing a Gladiator story. I'm a fan of Eddy Barrows so at least it will look good!
BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #31
Written by MARK WAID
Art by ADRIÁN GUTIÉRREZ
Cover by DAN MORA
Variant covers by IAN CHURCHILL and EDWIN GALMON
1:25 variant cover by MARCO D’ALFONSO
Artist Spotlight variant cover by NICOLA SCOTT
Hispanic Heritage Month variant cover by JOSÉ LUIS GARCÍA-LÓPEZ and JOE PRADO

DARKNESS FALLS! Eclipso, master of light and shadow, has risen to plague the World's Finest team of Superman and Batman! Powered like never before, Eclipso threatens to plunge the Earth into a state of eternal night--and eternal despair!

Eclipso! Can't wait to see what Waid will do with the villain! Plus bringing in someone like this villain means the chances of many deep cut guest stars grows!

I'll miss Dan Mora on inside art. I don't know Adrian Gutierrez.

Really love this book.

POWER GIRL #13
Written by LEAH WILLIAMS
Art by EDUARDO PANSICA and JÚLIO FERREIRA
Cover by YANICK PAQUETTE
Variant covers by CHUMA HILL and ARIEL COLON $3.99 US | 32 pages | Variant $4.99 US (card stock)

Can Power Girl trust her suitor Axel? Only one person can tell her that answer for sure—her best friend Omen. But when Omen’s telepathy is threatened by a chance encounter with a new hero, Paige must focus on saving her from herself—along with the rest of Metropolis

I really don't think I'll be getting this book at this point.

I just have to laugh how ... again ... Omen has to save the day.

Love Yanick Paquette's covers.

MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN #4
Written by JOSIE CAMPBELL
Art by PABLO M COLLAR
Cover by LI CREE
Variant cover by RICARDO LÓPEZ ORTIZ

Things are heating up in Metropolis. Lois, Jimmy, and the Kents have hidden Amazo from the ruthless Task Force X and Team 7—but after a startling revelation, they realize it’s not just Amazo in harm’s way, but the entire city!

Glad to see Amazo in the book as a sympathetic villain. (I always liked that in the Bronze Age, the android just wanted to sleep!)

I am a little sour on this right now given the heel turn of Supergirl in the show. But I still think Josie Campbell will do soli work here.

BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT: THE KRYPTONIAN AGE #3
Written by ANDY DIGGLE
Art and cover by LEANDRO FERNÁNDEZ
Variant covers by FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA and FELIPE MASSAFERA

In its search for ancient relics, the League of Assassins encounters the new bearer of the jade ring of Jong Li: Alan Scott! Meanwhile, in Metropolis, passionate reporter Lois Lane sets out for Kansas to investigate the robber baron looking to buy the Daily Planet…Lex Luthor!

I thought the first issue of this was pretty fun. We have seen the Kents and seen the rocket land. But no Superman yet.

I like Luthor and Lois being brought into the mix.

Maybe I'll review this here.
ABSOLUTE POWER: SUPER SON
Written by SINA GRACE and NICOLE MAINES
Art by JOHN TIMMS and TRAVIS MERCER
Cover by JOHN TIMMS
Variant cover by LUCIO PARRILLO and REIKO MURAKAMI Foil cover by JOHN TIMMS

Jonathan Kent has suffered more than most at the hand of the Trinity of Evil—but the son of Superman will summon the will to FIGHT BACK. In this special, over-sized edition of Absolute Power, we’ll travel to the depths of despair as one of the most powerful beings on planet Earth must reckon with his own past to save his future…and the road to recovery will pave the way for a critical new chapter in the journey of the Super Son. It’s a clash of power, a tale of self-discovery, and the start of a new dream in Absolute Power: Super Son!

Boy ,,, Jon Kent has disappeared off the faith of  Earth-O. While he was part of the last Crisis, he hasn't been seen since, even in a Superman event. Is the last thing he was in the Dan Parent back-up?

So now we get a one shot hopefully filling in some gaps. I like John Timms art. Sina Grace and Nicole Maines have yet to really wow me on any comics. So I don't know what to expect here if anything.

Another tale of self-discovery though.

Still on the fence if I am getting this one. Thoughts?

And anything else I missed?

I thought I posted this comment, but it has disappeared, so at the risk of posting a duplicate, I'm going to try again:

Absolute Power #3 has a variant cover featuring what appears to be Supergirl in Amazonian garb plus a headband, with Wonder Woman and Superman in the background. It's in the solicits, but here's a link at the distributor site. It's in a draft grayscale version right now.

I'm mystified why the current Powergirl series is still being published. If it was selling well, I could at least get a decision to keep publishing it from a purely commercial perspective. Alternately, if it seemed like DC had some plans to roll out a Powergirl tv series or film it might be understandable as a de facto promotional item for that. There doesn't however seem to be any will at DC to do more with Powergirl, sales aren't good, and for what it's worth reviews for it aren't good either. Who is this series for, and why is anybody still greenlighting issues of it for publication?

By the sound of the solicit, it sounds like Omen's the one that's going to need saving (now that's a surprise). I guess Williams felt she had to make up for Omen's recent lack of screentime by giving her a big spotlight in this issue. I was sure that "Paige"'s date was going to be a one-off issue, but now it's being dragged on for an entire arc. Talk about a slog...of all the storylines for Power Girl, she went with the least interesting one to write (and read) about.

And there's the big disconnect between the covers and the interiors. It's a shame that Power Girl is portrayed more accurately on covers than inside the actual book.

Oh well done on deciding to pack in the horrible Power Girl book.

There was a story with Jon Kent in the other week, in the DC summer giant thing. It was Jon and the young Aquaman and Bunker and the Ray being really wet.

I couldn’t get through it.
