Supergirl Trailer #2

The second trailer for Supergirl the movie dropped on Tuesday and I have to admit that I am feeling just a touch better about the whole thing. Yes, it is based on Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow book and that is quite evident in the trailer. But there are enough elements that are different that make me think this movie is going to end more hopeful than that book.

(To reread my thoughts on the first trailer, head here.)

I'll get to the trailer but I am going to start with the poster.

Let's look at this. Supergirl staring right into the camera, in the classic three-point super-hero landing pose, her left hand ready to strike. And she dominates the frame. Contrast that to the first posters.

Remember that one? Supergirl small in the frame. She's drinking. 'Look Out' instead of 'Look up'. Not exactly heroic. The next poster had the infamous 'Truth. Justice. Whatever'.

This poster really feels more like a heroic epic than those. And it is a dramatic departure from those earlier efforts which many people questioned.

I like this poster for sure. That shift away from that party-girl, 'no responsibility' non-hero is evident in the trailer. Instead this leans into the sadness side of things, with a pinch of heroism (maybe). There is clearly a tonal shift.

Anyways, watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1-pfiVMKAs

Now that doesn't mean this trailer is all inspirational, filled with heroic deeds. Instead, this trailer really seeems to lean into Kara's sadness.

I mean, Jimmy Ruffin's song 'What becomes of the broken hearted' is playing throughout. Get it? Kara is heartbroken from her loss. And we do see some party-girl elements of crowd surfing and day drinking. But it all has a pall of sadness over it. Compare that to the Blondie 'Call Me' anthem from the first trailer.

One thing I really loved was this message from Superman asking Kara to come home and find herself and her people. This was completely missing in King's book. Kara has family that cares about her and wants to help. (Love that he called himself Clark and not Kal too.)

We get a pretty good look at Kara being placed in her rocket and blasted off Argo City. Nice shot of Zor-El too.

Something else that is hammered home is that the only thing that Kara feels attached to is Krypto. Home is where Krypto is. She and Krypto had each other.

In some ways it makes sense. He is Kara's dog, from Krypton, and sort of the last tie she has to the home she knew. It would be an even tighter bond than even the usual tight relationship people have with their pets.

Which, of course, makes Krem shooting Krypto with a poison arrow (as he did in King's book) all the more devastating. This Kara is even closer to Krypto than the ones in the comics.

Like in Woman of Tomorrow, Kara has to chase down Krem and the brigands to get her hand on the antidote. And she only has three days.

Ruthye's story is there for sure. We see Krem kill her father.

Ruthye wants her revenge. And I am sure this is going to be a theme in the movie.

But this isn't a beat for beat retelling.

Because we see that Lobo is going to be a big part of the movie as well.

Momoa looks great as Lobo for sure.

As I said before, my guess is Lobo is going to be some sort of dark mirror for Kara, a glimpse at what she will become if she keeps on her current path. He is all over the trailer so I can't imagine his part is small.

I suspect the first two acts of the movie are going to be all about the sadness and trauma.

This looks like the funeral scene (presumably Alura's) where Kara first meets Krypto.

But at some point we lose the trench coat, jeans, and t-shirt. We see Supergirl in her costume.

At some point we get out of the dark bars and nighttime brawls and murky shots. At some point, again when in costume, we end up in a brighter sky.

And here we see her telling Ruthye that revenge won't take the pain away.

I am hoping that the third act is going to be a turn. She's now Supergirl. She realizes that revenge and wallowing might not make things better. Things are physically brighter. She is more active, pounding on bad guys.

It isn't going to be happy-go-lucky. The words pain and crying are littered throughout the trailer. This is an adaptation of Tom King after all. Look at Krem talking about the beautiful crying eyes.

But the action sequences look great, especially the glimpses we get when she is in costume.

I'll say my guess again. Ruthye wants revenge. Kara wants revenge too, because of Krypto. As they travel, we hear all about Kara's backstory, learn about her sorrow and pain. They meet up with Lobo who joins them. We see some similarities between Lobo's path in life and where Kara is now. She doesn't want to get to where Lobo is. Supergirl realizes she needs to overcome her past and becomes a hero.

Biggest guess? The last shot of the movie is Superman in a fight with something when a blast off screen hits the villain. He turns around to see Supergirl, in her costume, sun behind her, smiling. Earth is her new home. She is ready to be a hero.

The poster, the scenes in costume, fighting the bad guys in the sun, the line about revenge to Ruthye. There are even moments in the trailer that seem to mirror some shots from the Superman trailer, perhaps echoing that growth. I feel almost a little bit optimistic about this. I am probably deluding myself into a 'best case scenario'. But I thought this was a pretty solid trailer, amping up the heroism.

I love love love the fact that the end of the trailer announces Superman day this month! A comic ad!

So those are my thoughts! What are yours!
