Terrificon Wrap-Up #1 - Kerry Gammill And Some Sigs

Terrificon was last weekend and it was a tremendous time as it always is.

I'll start as I often do by thanking the show runner Mitch Hallock for putting on the show and giving me a press pass. I appreciate the hard work it takes to put the show together, for sure. The exhibition hall was packed with dealers, creators, and celebrities. Everyone was having a great time. I left this year with several commissions, many autographs, and a ton of stories. In fact this is one of probably three recap posts.

I'll start with my interaction with Kerry Gammill. When Gamill was announced, I was thrilled. Gammill was responsible for many of the Superman covers and art from the triangle memory that are burned into my brain. His style is stunning. And he did a bunch of Supergirl and Power Girl covers making him stand out in my mind as a commission that would be perfect for my collection.

I ran into Gammill's handler at the table for Gammill arrived and got on his sketch list.

The result is the incredible commission you see above. Just a great pose, a pensive face. This is an older sort of looking Supergirl, reminding me of Matrix during the Funeral For A Friend time period. She was growing as a hero. She was becoming more.

I am so happy with this commission!

Gammill was fun and personable at the table and talked about his time on the super-books.

I got some great covers he drew signed by him as well. The Supergirl mini-series issues have the trifecta of Stern, Brigman, and Gammill. The Supergirl and Team Luthor have Stern, Louise Simonson, Brigman and Gammill.

He laughed when I told him the cover for Power Girl #1 has lived rent free in my mind for nearly 40 years, he laughed. That cover is signed by the whole creative team.

Gammill was at the top of my list of gets. I am glad that he was at the show.

I'll showcase some other creator stories on these wrap-ups.

Steve Englehart was also at the show. I had met Englehart before at Terrificon and got his Mister Miracle run signed then. But in between, I went mad about Event Leviathan and did an insane deep dive about the Manhunters and Mark Shaw. This included Englehart's JLA run and Shaw's character arc in those stories. So I got JLA #140 and JLA #141 signed by him. I also got Madame Xanadu #1 signed.

I asked Englehart about it. He said he felt he needed a 'big group' to fight the JLA and he knew about the Manhunters so decided to up their threat level by attaching them to the Guardians. That's pretty cool.

I also asked if he knew that Shaw would be a traitor when he started this run. He said he did not have that planned. He said often times a character organically grows and start to write themselves. With Shaw, the villainous turn sort of just grew out of the other stories he was in. Now that is pretty interesting for me given how much Shaw stuff I read and wrote about.

More to come about the con in the upcoming weeks as time permits. But I didn't want to wait to long to thank Mitch Hallock again!
