Superman #4 came out this last week and was the best issue of this particular title since the Bendis takeover. While I have been enjoying the Metropolis plotlines in Action Comics, the Zaar-centric Superman hadn't grabbed me up to now. I think in this issue we finally get some of the characterization of Superman we have seen over in Action in this book. And that injection of personality added a ton of value to the proceedings here.
But more than just that personality, that look into Superman's ethics and some Pa Kent wisdom, it is the juxtaposition of these scenes with the mayhem violence happening around it that works doubly well. It isn't additive; it's multiplicative. When you hear what Superman wants but you see what he has to do, it makes the narrative sing.
Add to that Ivan Reis art (inked by Joe Prado and Oclair Albert), which is Neal Adams' stunning, and you have a winner issue. The action sequences are huge, letter-boxed, and mind-blowing. I also have to single out colorist Alex Sinclair for the huge palette he displays in the Zone scenes. Letterer Josh Reed also joins in the fun. From the art viewpoint, everything works together. Even the foil-enhanced cover is shiny fun.
I was floored here. And entertained. It all worked. On to the book.
The book opens with Superman just brawling with the combined might of Rogol Zaar and Jax-Ur's mob. There are big, bold splash pages of Superman throwing himself into the mix. He talks about how fighting Zaar seems foolish. Ma called it 'herding cats'. I love Kent wisdom and we get a ton of it here.
As much as Superman tries to keep the fight in space, Zaar sends it all crashing towards Earth.
I love the circular 'faboom' around Superman in the third panel, somehow making the force of the blow be more palpable, surrounding our hero. And that last panel! We see how desperate Superman is in the fight.
But it is an army he is fighting.
Like it or not, Bendis is keeping the solar flare in the armory. Unlike the Johns' stories where the flare completely drained him, it looks like Superman can control it a bit more now. I thought for sure the flare would disappear.
With the infantry temporarily disposed, it goes back to Zaar versus Superman. And this doesn't look good.
This doesn't look good. Zaar is out to kill. How can Superman respond?
In the midst of this fight, Superman flashes back to a conversation he had with Jon.
He talks about how easy it would be to unload on people. How easy it would be to kill Batman ... for instance. But holding back is the hard part. That's my Superman.
I love that Superman says, almost too casually, how easily he would simply decapitate Batman. Yes they are friends but they can differ significantly in approach. Jon, working with Damien, can probably understand all too well.
Fantastic.
Superman keeps hoping for the best in people. Someone might madden you one day and impress you the next. People will do good. You have to have faith in people. You need perspective.
I love the breakdown of this page. Superman is talking about historical perspective in having faith in people.
But right after that word ... perspective ... you get to see things, literally, from Superman's perspective. We see a mob flying in to kill him.
How hard it must be to keep one perspective when faced with this real one.
That is the power of comics, words and images meshing so wonderfully.
And without hesitation, he flies into the fray.
Still, he tries to remain the symbol of hope for people. Whatever awful things people say about him, Superman will rise above. As Pa said 'the dirt's down there for a reason.'
God I love Pa Kent Wisdom!
We then see that sentiment played out in real life.
Last issue I wondered why Jax-Ur would help Zaar who may (or may not) have committed Kryptonian genocide. This issue, Superman calls him out on it. Why?
And when Jax-Ur wonders if Superman is lying, Superman says he doesn't lie.
People believe what they see. Superman isn't down in the dirt. He rises above, here literally flying away.
Just fantastic.
The battle rages on with Superman keeping Zaar at arm's length, even using a tractor trailer as a baseball bat. What a great panel!
Luckily, the Atom has found a solution. He'll shrink the Earth until it is small enough to use the portable Phantom Zone Projector to bring it all back.
Hmmm ... maybe too easy?
Despite a last page that questions if the Earth has returned, it seems like it worked. Everything is back in the proper dimension. Everything that is except Superman who was too busy clearing the criminals off the surface to take part in the escape.
Once more Bendis shows us that he understands Superman. Even though being trapped here, with Zaar, might be a death sentence. But that doesn't matter. Earth is safe. That's all that matters.
Whew!
That was a white knuckle ride of a brawl issue with spliced in scenes of emotion and ethics. And it all clicked. In particular, that 'perspective' panel progression is pure brilliance. And seeing a young, unscarred, less jaded Jon was a treat. It even made the quick solution to bring Earth back a bit easier to swallow.
Nothing like a great Superman issue to make me smile.

The Bendis Superman gets better and better. I don't actually mind the solar flare being used if it's a graduated thing, ie not his entire power - but there should be a line explaining it.
I wonder if Adam Strange will, in a second or two, bear witness to the incredible growing Earth - or is it stuck in the Microverse ( a place that seems to be a joint Marvel/DC thing these days).
Does Pa Dranj have words of wisdom for any lucky bairns?
Great story and great art. It IS getting better.
And Rogol Zaar gets progessively more annoying. "You got them fooled". Oh, please, enlighten us, Zaar: How is Superman fooling anybody? What is he fooling them about? Never mind that, since "Secret Origins" is canon, he didn't come up with the name.
Heh. Jax-Ur can shout whatever he wants, you can tell he KNOWS Superman isn't lying. Maybe we will see a Zoner allying himself with Superman to bring Krypton's killers to justice like during Black Zero's first appearance? No long ago, Bendis shared a page where the whole Superman Family is facing the House of Zod and his allies. We'll see some alliance of sorts?
Jon lifting and smashing a green car brings a smile to my face. His Earth-Two Dad must be proud.
Off-topic, but Supergirl Comicbook Chronology site has been updated to cover the Matrix era, and the author tries to cover the Modern Age Kara era, too.

Have we seen the solar flare since "The Final Days of Superman" or that era? If not - that was a new power discovered by New 52 Superman, and exercising it must have been one of the many factors that wore him out and led to his death.
Maybe the power is diluted in the present Superman Reborn.
As for superwomenmania.com, that appears to be a Forum/Story/Blog hybrid I can't figure out. Anonymous, how would we find what you are referring to?
Best I came up with was after I stumbled on Community > SiteMap, searched the site map page for the word Matrix, and came up with "Mae (Matrix) era as Lex Luthor's girlfriend" - a post written in 2010 which is apparently stored in "Forum > Superwoman on screen and in print > Superwomen in comics and books". That can't be what you meant, so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

It seems to have been used in Bendis’s Man of Steel mini series, at the end of #4, with zilch weakening of Superman at the start of the next issue. It seems Bendis is using it as something Superman can control, not so much the entirety of his stored solar energy as a big fat sample.

I don't understand your question. I provided the link. I checked it again. It works.

This is the link for the classic era:

And this is the link for the non-Kara era:

Have you tried copy/paste it?
