I know it doesn't come as much of a big surprise but it was announced earlier this week that Supergirl (as well as almost every other show on the CW) has been renewed for another season. Here is the coverage over on Variety:
http://variety.com/2018/tv/news/riverdale-jane-the-virgin-arrow-flash-supernatural-renewed-cw-1202741489/
There isn't much more to say. Here is a list of the shows renewed. I was glad to see Black Lightning listed as coming back. And my daughter and I list DCLOT as a guilty pleasure so I am very happy to see that survive the axe.
The CW has renewed 10 of its current series, the network announced Monday.
The renewed series are: “Arrow” (Season 7), “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (Season 4), “Legends of Tomorrow” (Season 4), “The Flash” (Season 5), “Jane the Virgin” (Season 5), “Riverdale” (Season 3), “Supergirl” (Season 4), and “Supernatural” (Season 14). In addition, freshman shows “Black Lightning” and “Dynasty” have been picked up for second seasons.
This season for Supergirl has been exceptionally strong. Between the Earth X crossover, the delightful Midvale flashback episode, the inclusion of the Legion, and the threat of Reign, this season has had compelling stories and character arcs. I have really been following closely the 'being human and having feelings equals weakness' theme which has been running through the episodes. As I have said before, Sam's feelings for Ruby will be Reign's undoing proving that being human is a strength.
Yes, the Mon-El romance (especially coupled with the arranged wedding with Imra) has been a bot forced. But otherwise this show has been very strong. So I am thrilled the show team is getting rewarded with another season.
Hooray for us as Supergirl fans! Four season of live action! Incredible!

As of now, "Supergirl" ties Superboy and Lois & Clark as the 3rd longest running Superman based TV series. Only "Adventures of Superman" and "Smallville" lasted longer.
I'm very happy. It was about time the Maid of Might was recognized, even if DC typically botches up her book and then blames the character. And her show has been renewed just in time for her 60th birthday!
I've got a kind of wish list for the next season. I'm afraid most of my ideas are impossible for a lot of reasons, but I never told it was a realistic list:
- Clark and Lois paying a visit to Kara and Alex.
- Batgirl making an appearance and bonding with Supergirl. There's no such thing like too much Kara/Babs fanservice. (I'll bet it'll never happen, regrettably)
- Power Girl.
- Continuing in that vein, Laura Vandervoort making an appearance and playing Smallville's Kara.
- Kara/Querl's romance hints.
- Adapting some classic Supergirl stories like "Red Daughter", "Demon Spawn" or "Bizarrogirl"
- We've seen Alphonse Luzano, Reactron, Bizarrogirl, Psi and Reign. I want more classic Supergirl enemies like Blackstarr, and some heavyweights like Brainiac, Mongul or the Apokolips' folks.
- Lucy Lane as Superwoman.
- Another Arrowverse crossover.
I don't want Crisis on Infinite Earths, Lena turning evil or the Guardian subplot hogging more screentime, and I'd like CW forgot about the Kara/Mon romance. I also hope that Mon-El makes less appearances and Maggie doesn't return. Nothing against the actress, the character or Sanvers, but I think both the show and Miss Lima have moved on (to be fair, I guess at least a modicum of my indifference stems from dozens of "Bring Maggie back or you'll lose viewers! What else is the point of a fourth season? Maggie is the only reason for watching Supergirl! Bring Sanvers back, your homophobic bastard!" self-entitled, whiny tweets).
By the way, do you remember Supergirl and Thunder met back during the Loeb's run and Kara was Anissa's teammate for a short while? I wonder if this is the reason that "Black Lightning" has name-dropped Supergirl several times.
Yes, the Supergirl series' renewal was always 'in the bag', so to speak. The CW Upfronts next month may give us a better understanding of how Season 4 might be scheduled differently, since the net is bringing back original Sunday night programming next season.
BTW, check out the new extended teaser trailer for episode 3.14 "Schott Through the Heart". It's almost as if the show is competing with the promos for "A Quiet Place", which opens this weekend.

Good news, glad the renewal was announced prior to the resumption of new episodes. Yeah a good Batgirl-Supergirl team up on TV would likely blow the top off the internet, agree with the above poster that it'll likely not happen due to copyright reasons...pity.
Hopefully the sun will gently set on the Kara-Mon thing next season, I ended up liking Mon El more than I thought I would, but his plot possibilities are exhausted whereas Querl Dox is loaded with potential....
Also hoping somehow Lena can stay on the side of angels, it isn't likely since the show has a constant hunger for strong female antagonists...but a guy can hope all the same.

I agree with anon1 in almost everything. I don't think bringing in Powergirl is a good idea though. I don't mind comics where boobs are used for sexual innuendo, there's room in comics for everything imo, but I don't think the supergirl show is the time or the place, it's a show wanting to convey something completely different, and there needs to be room for that too.
Whenever Harley gets her own TV Show they should send in Powergirl. Harley is already unapologetically challenging the prudeness of society and would be a better place for the boob window version of Supergirl.
I'd also like for them to forget the relationship with Mon-El. Besides being a problematic character, he's just not interesting.
I hope that they can find a way to have more with young Kara and Alex. They chose the young actresses for the roles very well, and it'd be nice to see them again.
+1,000,000,000 re: Babs and Kara story. That's been top of my wishlist since S1 started airing!
Also on my wishlist has been the following :
- bringing back the previous actresses who've been involved in Supergirl -- Summer Glau, Molly Quinn, Nicholle Tom, Nicole
Sullivan -- in some guest star role. I think it'd be a nice acknowledgement of them in the Supergirl legacy.
- Helen Slater dressed in Supergirl's costume in a "fangirl moment"... and Melissa B unexpectedly catching her doing that.
It'd put one HECKUVA smile on my face!
- a Power Girl appearance -- even as a "starts as an amesiatic but is revealed to not actually be her" story. Personally I
think this would make a great "rest" episode. Or even for something for a "Supergirl & Ruby day" episode. I LOVED and miss
those flashback pieces with young Kara taking young Alex out for night flying without the parents knowing.
> Another Arrowverse crossover.
I'm sure TPTB are hard at work for next year's crossover episode... and maybe, just maybe, there will be a 5th crossover ep
in Black Lightning! One can wish.
Regards

Esmé Bianco just joined the cast. I know the odds are slim to none that DC would lend Batgirl to the Supergirl show, but I can't help doing this at the moment:
https://media.giphy.com/media/13rvTa4N7TmSt2/giphy.gif
The whole internet would have a sweet heart attack of happiness if a babs and Kara team up ever happened. But yeah, DC won't license it and it was actually for that very reason that Alex was created, something like a pseudo batgirl.
Esmé Bianco joining in so late makes me think that it's either to hint at the next season or maybe she is a legionnaire (shadow lass anyone?)
As for the fandom, they seem to have found their latest fad with bombshells declaring Kara as gay and so the official Twitter, the cast and their mothers are now inundated with tweets about how they are homophobic for not doing the same to the show Kara. Who is actually gonna tell them that bombshells isn't in the main continuity even. I sometimes think, it's better to wrap up Katie McGrath's Lena luthor arc fast so that a particular part of the fandom will dissimilate.

I've seen that.
It's another silly, dumb debate. Yes, Kara is queer in Bombshells right like the 110% of the cast. She's also technically daughter of Lara and Allura, raised in Russia, sister to Stargirl and fights Nazis and zombies in an alternate WWII. It's an alternate universe, which makes it as relevant as that Elseworlds where Superman is a centaur in a three-ways relationship with Lois and Lana or that alternate Earth where Linda Danders married Jimmy Olsen or that cartoon where Brainy has a crush on Superman or that story where Barbara Gordon is a vampire.
I wonder... are those "fans" aware that if I was one of the showrunners I'd be even less inclined to listen to cyber-bullies who are harassing me and calling me names?
I'm sick of shippers. They've ruined the fandom and are trying to ruin the show with their over-blown self-entitlement. Olicittiers ruined Arrow and Supercorps want to bring Supergirl down.
I don't care for shipping because I know I'll have not what I want. I can't care less for Karamel or Supercorp. I'm a Kara/Querl shipper, but I'd settle for Dick Malverne. The latter is simply not happening and I convinced myself during S2 that the former wouldn't happen. I only ship Kara with one female character, but I doubt Babs makes an appearance. So, I don't care; and I don't make unreasonable demands, characteristic of obsessed, immature teenagers.
I only want a decent show which lasts enough long to make the mainstream aware of Supergirl, Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El from Krypton, and is successful enough to prevent another "Let's kill her off so that Superman sells better" scenario.
But apparently, some loud people only cares for their absurd fantasies.
Groan.
Moving on. I agree that Power Girl's costume might be problematic. Maybe they could tone it down, but I guess fanboys would complain about it.
Hard to respond to this these days.
I think the show has established her as straight. I don’t think shippers get to rule. Heck, I’m in the Super-Winn camp.
I’m just glad the show is renewed. Wonder if Bianca is going to be a more established Maxima.
Hope we get more flashback episodes too!

I believe there were some people who said that the cyber bullying of Ruby by her friend was also a small nod by the writers to how toxic the fandom is.
Supergirl really has one of the worst fandoms in dctv, right after arrow. Atleast in Arrow, the lead actor decides to call out some of the toxicity but here no one can because anyone who even beeps about it, gets called homophobic (case in point: SDCC 2017). The moral self righteous crusade of a part of the fandom is really getting weary especially since it seems like these people don't have anything better to do with their life than just complain about the show as if it had promised them something.
But anyways, I am still holding out for Kara/querl. The season is young and if I can see poepl speculating about Argo coming back based on some set pics then Kara and querl too can be together.
"I think the show has established her as straight."
In the "Pilot", when Kara is about to reveal her secret and Winn believes she's going to come out, she plainly states "I'm not gay".
You'd think if she was lesbian or bisexual she'd have told so. Or brought her sexuality up when her sister came out.
"I don’t think shippers get to rule. Heck, I’m in the Super-Winn camp."
You're using logic and common sense, Anj. A very dangerous thing.
Fans can ship whatever, but people in charge will do however they see fit. Usually what they think is more profitable. I learnt this the hard way.
"I’m just glad the show is renewed."
Of course. That's what really matters.
"Wonder if Bianca is going to be a more established Maxima."
Hmm... I hadn't thought of this.
Maybe Lightning Lass? Obviously Saturn Girl is proof that the writers don't care for hair color, but Ayla has been alluded to, and Bianca is a redhead... So, maybe?
"Hope we get more flashback episodes too!"
It'd be great. I want to see more of Kara's childhood.
"The season is young and if I can see poepl speculating about Argo coming back based on some set pics then Kara and querl too can be together."
I think Argo coming back is mostly baseless speculation.
I find funny some fans have complained about that possibility, thought. God forbids a comicbook superhero show adapts a comic storyline.
P.D.: It isn't important, but I'm surprised an obviously clickbait article mentioned Lesla-Lar being a good Arrowverse villain:
http://fandom.wikia.com/articles/5-villains-must-appear-arrowverse
“I'm sick of shippers”
Then lets stop talking about them.
Shippers are frustrating and should be avoided but sometimes people also need to vent.
Regarding Batgirl, a team up would be great, but as others have said, probably not do-able as things now stand. But what if they brought on an athletic redhead, whose name JUST HAPPENS to be Barbara (no last name, no costume) to team up and hang out with Kara for an episode or two? Is she Barbara Gordon, or just another girl named Barbara?
As for Power Girl, she wouldn't have to have "the window". Early on in All Star Comics, Wally Wood closed it up, I believe at Jeanette Kahn's request. And she hasn't always been drawn with it.
The cameo appearance I would really like to see would be Phyllis Coates, the last remaining cast member from The Adventures of Superman. Unlikely, as she is 91 and retired. But you never know. Beverly Washburn would be a good choice for a guest shot. As a little child she appeared in Superman and the Mole Men (1951) and is still active.
