Supergirl Show 218: Ace Reporter Preview

I always wonder just how networks decide when they are going to take a break between episodes. Like why is Supergirl taking a 3 week break now? Last episode was one of the best and momentum is gathering. So why hit the brake?

I would have taken the break after the episode before, when Kara broke up with Mon-El. Take three weeks off then and you might give the vibe that the break-up was longer than a mere 23.5 hours. I know, you would need to coordinate with the Flash musical episode. But this seemed like an odd choice.

Anyways, I was pretty disappointed last Monday when there was no new episode. So I had to bide my time by looking at the trailer for episode 218, the next episode in the queue. Here is a link to the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Yg0ai80fFA

It is a doozy of a preview and you better have your finger on the pause button because there are a lot of quick cuts.

The episode is titled Ace Reporter and throughout the trailer we get a statement, 'How far would you go for love, for justice, for truth.'

We know the villain is one of Lena's ex, played by iZombie actor Rahul Kohli. We see glimpses of him, one kissing Lena.

And then we get a voiceover saying 'Kara Danvers, I have some information for you.' Does this mean someone is trying to get Kara some inside information for her to report on? Is it a set-up? Is this a way to get her back into CatCo? I will admit, it is hard to know exactly what is going on. But the visuals? Gorgeous.

We start out with this claustrophobic look at Kara. This gives the feel that someone is watching her, or has her in a target. It has a Hitchcock feel to it.

So I do think that Kara is in danger in this episode. And given we here Kohli make a semi-threatening statement about Kara getting him in her crosshairs, my guess is she is looking into him and he isn't happy.

And then we get those rapid shots.

This has to be Kara saving someone from an explosion. There are definitely 2 sets of legs and one cape.

It isn't all Kara. We do see Supergirl in costume, apparently magnetized or stuck to this Kirby-looking device.

A Kryptonian-magnet??

In the quickest of glimpses, we see Lyra a bit out of control.

Is she fighting something? Out of control? Being controlled?

Anyways, I am glad she is still in the show. Hopefully now that the scam aspect of her storyline is over, we can see something more from her. I hope she becomes a bit more three-dimensional.

 And then the end shot!

A car explodes and see see Kara, the S-shield exposed through her civilian togs.

My guess is Kara is lured to a car to get 'information' and a car bomb goes off in an attempt to kill her. Hopefully, the killers aren't looking to make sure the job is done. Then we really would have a non-existent secret identity.

Great image!

We have seen this a lot before. But the two places it reminded me of the most was the reveal in Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow or the cover of Superman #41.

We also see some Guardian, some Snapper Carr, and some Lena. Great trailer to keep me interested.
Two more weeks until we get to see it.

Good question. Why the break? Why now? Why ruining the momentum?

Be as it may, the next chapter appears to be intense.

When I heard that too, I DEFINITELY was wondering what was going on. Programmed stops in production? Network-mandated break?
Will just have to wait to see this, but yeah...

A couple of thoughts regarding this one:

1. Easter Week usually means viewers are likely distracted by other things...holiday get-togethers with friends and family, or special events for the kids.

2. Seems to be network-mandated, as The Flash also went on hiatus the very same week. Returns the same week as Supergirl as well, BTW.

3. Probably good to save some episodes for the May sweeps period. This month sees several returning mid-season shows, some season enders, and pa few new series....which can also be a distraction from those that premiered earlier in the season. So it's possible that this keeps away some sort of ennui from more predictable scheduling.

The fact that they are hyping it two weeks in advance is indicative that show has some heft with the suits so to speak....

The picture of Kara's shirt torn open, perhaps by the blast is reminiscient of the Adventures of Superman TV show episode "Five Minutes to Doom" whixh kicked off season 2. This is my favorite episode of the entire series because of the great adventure.

In that episode as Clark and Lois are driving from an interview with a man falsely facing death for murder, after they drop off a stranger, Clark turns to find what he dropped off (thanks to X-Ray vision)...was a bomb. Clark called for Lois to step on it, he opened the door, bomb and all and took a tumble on a grassy area just as the bomb goes off. Of course the impact rips open his shirt unveiling the Superman costume underneath.

I'd like to think so, but I'm kind of pesismistic when it comes to Supergirl. Most of time I'm waiting for the other show to drop.

Then again...

I LOVE "Five Minutes to Doom", its one of my fave AOS Eps next to "Panic in the Sky" etc....for once the entire Daily Planet crew work together in appropriate ways to unearth evidence exonerating a condemned man. Lois' relentless questioning get a shady developer to admit something incriminating, a goofy character turn from Jimmy recovers the evidence and Clark grinds thru the public records until the truth is uncovered. It would make a superlative Supergirl episode with a little tweaking...right down to the great closing shot when George Reeves busts thru a stone wall and aborts the execution at the last minute...a very expressionist shot as I recall.
