Review: Wednesday Comics #6

Wednesday Comics #6 Supergirl strip included the Aquaman guest appearance that has been hinted at. Why Supergirl thinks that Aquaman's telepathy with marine animals will translate to land-based super-pets I have no idea.

But really, I don't care ... this strip has been way too much fun.

This week's theme panel shows a Supergirl who looks mentally wrung out, emphasized by her wringing out the cape. She simply looks drained.

Supergirl has the pets leashed and flies out to a remote rock in the ocean and awaits Aquaman's arrival.

I love Palmiotti's characterization of Aquaman. He seems as cool as the other side of the pillow. And it is clear that he is the primary defender of the oceans which (of course) is the majority of the planet. Aquaman seems unbelievably busy, constantly on his phone hearing about one disaster after another.

I also like how Supergirl responds to be both being splashed by a whale and called Princess by Aquaman. I don't think she took kindly to be called Princess. She looks a little indignant there.

While the super-pets get into some minor mischief on this rock, Aquaman fields calls about some major oceanic crises - oil tanker spills, tsunamis, pirates - only to put those problems on hold to talk to Supergirl. I wonder how he reacts to Kara's emergency - out of control super-pets. Hopefully he will understand the damage they can get into. After all, they nearly downed a airplane.

But Supergirl's expression says it all. While Streaky pins sea urchins to her, she sits slumped, head in hand, dejected.

This continues to be a very fun strip with fantastic art. I have enjoyed this very much.

As for the rest of this week's Wednesday Comics, there were some new ups and downs.

Kamandi and Green Lantern remain consistently excellent.

Strange Adventures took a bit of a left-hand turn with Adam Strange suddenly aged and on Earth. I hope Pope can wrap up a new plot line in the remaining 6 issues.

Deadman, Catwoman/Demon, and Superman all got much more interesting with nice cliffhangers.

And at least Sgt. Rock stopped getting beaten about the head.

Unfortunately, Metamorpho remains lean on content. The 'Snakes and Ladders' gag wasn't funny enough to warrant losing half the page.

And Wonder Woman had an interesting vertical layout but still seems too congested.

Still, there is something wonderful about unfolding the paper each week and reading these giant comics.

Overall Grade (Supergirl): A
Overall Grade (Wednesday Comics): B/B+

I love the frontpieces in all the Supergirl strips...funny with tons of emotional content. If I thought the format and size could be preserved I'd by this TPB in a heartbeat!

rookie mistake supergirl, that doesn't look like a kryptonite leash to me!

Thanks for the post.

I am pretty sure the plan is to preserve the size for the TPB. More importantly, I read somewhere that DC was most likely releasing the strips in collected form individually. So I won't have to buy all of them in trade form.

Really? WOW, I didn't know they were planning on doing that. :/
