Superman Appearing On Supergirl??

When the news came out that the Supergirl television show was moving to the CW, there was some cause for concern. Would the budget drop? Would we stop getting great effects? Would the cast all return? Some of those questions have been answered. Others linger.

But the show did stoke the fire of optimism a little yesterday when show runner Andrew Kreisberg announced that Superman will appear on the first two episodes of the show. Here is a link to Entertainment Weekly's coverage: http://www.ew.com/article/2016/06/06/supergirl-superman-season-2-cw

And a pertinent blurb:
“Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl” says executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”

Now I can dissect this in many ways.

My hope is that they bring Superman in for the first two episodes to then have him announce he needs to go into deep space to fight a cosmic threat. This was the show 100% eliminates the 'where is Superman' rant that occasionally haunted the first season. (Remember the Super-boots?)  It could then be revealed that the cosmic threat is the Crisis-style catastrophe hinted at over on the Flash.

So I hope they bring Superman in to then get him out of the show. I'd like that most of all. Because this is Kara's show and her story. Having Superman in episodes can only detract from what should be her story.

Now onto the bigger question. How is going to play him? Given Berlanti shows predilection to honor the past, I am hoping they bring in someone already linked to the character. And if I do my math right, in this show, Superman is probably around 36-38.

Personally, I hope Matt Bomer gets the job. He is the right age. He looks like Superman. And he was Superman's voice in the animated Superman:Unbound, a movie which had a big role for Supergirl.  That would be a nice link to everything.

I suppose Smallville's Tom Welling is a sentimental choice. He was Superman on the CW. He also is the right age. And the show has already brought in Smallville alum Laura Vandervoort. This would also be a nice touch.

Still, I like the Bomer idea a bit more.

But who's to say this isn't all some elaborate feint.

Maybe there is some timey-wimey thing happening. Maybe a young Kal is somehow in the pod that crashed in the season finale. Maybe Daniel Dimaggio gets to recreate his role as young Kal like he did last season.

Anyways, the Kreisberg announcement got some Supergirl buzz happening on the internet and that's a good thing.

And I'd bet something big that the end of the second episode leaves the world without Superman.

They keep it a big secret, with misdirections, so everybody is shocked when Superman turns out to be...Henry Cavill.

They'll never do it because costs might be up there. Also the keeping separate of the TV and movie universes. It was nearly done before though. 'Arrow' I think made an offer to Liam Neeson to appear as Ra's Al Ghul and he was interested but had to turn it down in the end.

The question of WHO to play the Man of Steel is going to be The Big Question(TM) for sure.
I'll leave that debate to those with more time on their hands, though I agree if previous
Superman actor(s) are available, willing and able, SCHWEET!!

I'm just happy of the possibility of seeing the Supercousins together and interacting on
the (small)screen finally. Personally, I think we were robbed when the possibility of seeing
Chris Reeve's Superman and Helen Slater's Supergirl together on the big screen fell through.

Not to knock against the other times we've seen the supercousins together though, both
serious and humorous. When I heard this news, for some reason I got thinking again of Super
Best Friends Forever and THAT little gem -- "Jeeze Kal-El, why do you gotta be such a Nark!"

I second your view as well, Anj, as to what role Superman will play? A onetime thing?
With possibilities of future appearances? I agree, this should be SUPERGIRL's story / show,
but on the flip side, all the inconsistencies and grating ways TPTB went to in S1 to avoid
SHOWING a Superman... "Superboots," anyone?

Can only see where this goes.

I guess for continuity reasons Brandon Routh is off the board huh? I don't have a dog in this hunt save only to express the pious hope that Superman is cast with an appropriate age-range in mind vis'avis his younger/older cousin.
This is fun news though...

Tom Welling would be amazing, but I doubt it, it would make the continuity confusing for a lot of people, Flash can get away with casting the older Flash as Jay Garrick because it's been more than 10 years, Smallville ended just 5 years ago. So Boomer would be cool, I'm still hoping Tom Welling shows up as Kal-L (or Smallville Superman in a Kal-L role) in either The Flash or Supergirl, whenever they do Crisis.

The thought of a tie in comic and animated shorts on CW Seed of SUPERBOOTS is funny in a silly kind of way, but it really wouldn't take off.

I'll get my coat.

My brother said that he thinks it's because of fallout of the critical and fan negativity toward "Batman V Superman ..." That DC wants to be able to provide a more positive Superman, which would match what will be in comics with Lois & Clark and Jon. If Superman is shown in full, it will certainly boost the ratings for the two episodes. Since we will be dealing with "The New Kryptonian" next season, it would only make sense that Clark would be there to meet her or him.

Thanks for all the comments.

I would actually love Cavill to show up as Superman and play a more classic version of Kal. But that's not happening. The idea that this is a middle finger to the DCEU is a good one (maybe because I feel that way).

Routh would be fun but as mentioned, impossible given his role as Atom.

I wonder if it'll be some unknown?

As noted before the Producers like to reference and include prior actors within the super-franchise.....but I'm guessing Welling won't do it...but then again Bomer or Christopher might.....
