Review: Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong 2 #5

Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2 #5 came out last week and was another 'pedal to the metal', nonstop insane action issue that felt like a summer blockbuster movie in the cold of New England November. I mean when you have a battle royale between kaiju it is always a winner. But throw in a giant-sized Superman and other normal sized heroes and it is time to grab your popcorn.

Writer Brian Buccellato knows you need more than just the action to keep the book moving so while I have come for the fights, I stay for the interesting storylines. Remember, this story has been taking place on the Monster-Earth, meaning that some multiversal insanity can happen. And with this being an Elseworld, all sorts of stuff can happen. Characters can die. Villains can turn.

More importantly for here, Supergirl remains a vital part of the heroes, wading into the fray and often leading.

Christian Duce is on art here and continues to shine. I really love the precise, fine-lined art that he brings to the insanity. His character work is great. Love his Harley. Love his Kara. Love his gargantuan Superman.

I am having a blast with this book, enjoying the ride.

As I said, we are on Earth-Monster (my designation) which means anything can happen.

How interesting that Harley wants to find the Joker of this universe! What does she want to do with him? And is he the Joker? Or unchanged?

But the reveal to Batman that Waller is dead shows the stakes are high.

Last issue, a kaiju-sized Superman decide to throw down with Godzilla. The rematch from the last series we wanted to see.

But maybe it is more like the old comic trope of two beings fighting before teaming up to beat the bad guys.

When King Ghidorah and Rodan show up, Godzilla and Superman decide to put their differences aside and fight the real bad guys.

Love this double page spread showing the size and grandeur of this threat,

While Superman and Godzilla put their two heads together to fight the three heads of Ghidorah, Wonder Woman and Supergirl do their best to corral Rodan.

Really love that Buccellato shows how strong Supergirl is, how important she is as she wades in. Too bad Rodan overpowers the two of them. (Remember, Supergirl is weaker on this planet than usual.)

Meanwhile, the Flash also learns that not only has Amanda Waller been killed but also that Colonel Shaw has taken over, forcing the Suicide Squad people to follow his commands.

I have become a bit tired of the multiverse overload that has happened recently but this one, perhaps because it is such a different universe, has been fun.

Trying to even things up, Green Lantern makes himself a Shogun Warrior sized contruct to try and join the battle. But despite all the efforts, including Supergirl giving one of Ghidorah's heads a right cross, the bad monsters continue to overpower our heroes.

Even Godzilla is seriously down for the count.

Time to tag in a new ally!

In comes King Kong who seems to intuit that Ghidorah needs to be taken down.

Hal welcoming Kong to the right side was fun.

Check out Duce's detail on these monsters! Love it. Even the 'barely in control' Superman looks slick.

One more mystery though.

Lex is trying to harness the energy of this world for some experiment. Remember, he harnessed it to embiggen Croc in an earlier issue. So what is phase three?

As I said, I am here for the monster fights. But stuff like this keeps me intrigued.

Unfortunately, Superman's growth wears off and he shrinks down to size. Without a big gun like Kal, Godzilla and Kong are quickly defeated by Ghidorah and Rodan. In fact, Kong is pitched down to hole to inner earth.  It looks like all is lost.

Our heroes will try to help their kaiju friends. That includes Superman and Supergirl who go to check on Kong. Please please please, let there be some good Kara/Kong moments next issue. It is what I am waiting for!

Two more issues to go so plenty of times to wrap this up in a satisfying way!

Overall grade: B+
