Review: Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong 2 #4

Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong #4 came out last week and pushed the story forward in an unexpected and very entertaining way. As always, you just have to let this comic wash over you like a wonderfully electric summer blockbuster movie. Time jumps? Tech miracles? Insanity? It's all good in a comic like this. Sit back and enjoy.

Writer Brian Buccellato brings us this heady mix of super-heroics, kaiju battles, and Super Friends silliness. Yes, he needs to jump through some hoops to get everything together but it works. I mean, who knew I needed a Black Manta/Cheetah buddy movie? But I am a Supergirl fan and Buccellato continues to show her tremendous respect. Even depowered on this Monarch Earth, she is proactive and a leader. And we end with a cliffhanger that made me want more.

Christian Duce remains on art and continues to shine. His work on the kaiju are incredible detailed. His super-hero work is tremendous. Love the battle sequences. His Kara is fantastic.

We're halfway through! What more insanity can come!

The Justice League on Earth have figured out how to open the rift to Earth Monarch and before Kong can squash the concussed Flash, Green Lantern pokes his head out.

You might remember that in the first series, Kong donned the GL ring! Hal hopes reciting the GL oath will awaken some memory in Kong and slow the fight.

Somehow the Flash knows that this confrontation is earlier in the Earth Monarch timeline. Kong doesn't know the heroes.

Wonky timey-wimey time loops. Why not?

I don't know if I needed this explanation. Kong is a beast. But there we are. More insanity.

Green Lantern heads out to Earth-M while the Flash returns to the League.

Things aren't looking good for the heroes with the big guns, Superman and Supergirl, not processing yellow sunlight well.

Superman is squaring off against Godzilla which frightens Lois. Duce does a great job conveying just how worried Lois is here. After all, in the last issue Superman almost died when blasted with the Atomic Breath.

I do like how we are building a history here.

Godzilla has been called a balancer in this universe, something to protect the planet. defending it.

I love how Superman basically says he is the same thing. He is trying to get all the DC villains off this planet to keep it safe. He is a balancer like Godzilla.

But our King of Monsters isn't buying it.

This really tickled me, like Superman and Godzilla are two sides of the same coin.

But as I said, Godzilla isn't buying it, attacking our hero.

Luckily Supergirl shows up and it is time for a handicap match, two against one.

Love Supergirl in this book. Love her!

Even better, she is sort of the tactical leader. When the two buzzing around seems to be ineffective, she tells Superman they need to coordinate into one attack.

Pretty cool how she is an equal on this world, a Leaguer and an established hero.

But in their weakened state, they are still no match.

As for our two villains still on the board, they are summoned to see Lex and Shaw. Neither of them like it.

There is no honor among thieves. They both say they'll kill Lex and/or Shaw.

But Cheetah's just cold-blooded.

It's like a road movie with psychopaths!

The League arrives to save the Supers. Green Lantern throws up a shield that Godzilla is trying to blast through.

And Mister Terrific has perfected Lex's kaiju-izing gas. But it won't work on Wonder Woman (magic) or Flash (head injury). It won't kill Superman (like it did Croc) so it has to be Superman. Even though it will 'slow' his synapses.

This was a quick fix of Luthor's tech but let's just roll with it ...

Why should we roll with it?

Because it means we get 'Superman Primal' bulked up to Kong-size and finally a match for Godzilla.

Who wins the fight? What other monsters are flying over the horizon to join the fray? Will our heroes survive? You'll have to read it.

But how great is this? Kaiju Superman fighting Godzilla!?! Too freaking cool.

I am loving this silly book for the insanity of it all. But throw in a great Supergirl and this Manta/Cheetah side story and this just keeps getting better. Glad Christian Duce has been given the time to do all the pages.
