September 2021 DC Comics Solicits

The September solicits for DC Comics are out. Here is a link of all the comics that'll be on the shelves:
https://www.gamesradar.com/dc-solicitations-september-2021/

As usual, Batman and Bat-books abound in the month. Also, there are plenty of Suicide Squad books coming out. No big surprise there given the upcoming movie. But the super-books are holding their own. It does seem like the futures seen in Future State are coming to fruition in the present.

We also have now sampled Tom King's Supergirl book. Having read that opening chapter, I am now looking more closely at the solicits for that book.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW #4
Writer: TOM KING
Artist: BILQUIS EVELY
Cover: BILQUIS EVELY
Variant Cover: ROSE BESCH

Supergirl sets her sights on the Brigands, a group of dastardly nomads hell-bent on slaughtering all they come across. Now she must follow their path of destruction to find the fugitive they've been hiding who set her on this intergalactic journey in the first place!

Since we know that King borrowed liberally from True Grit in the opening chapter, I am wondering which Western this might be leaning into. The Magnificent Seven with Calvara's horde?

It seems the Brigands are hiding Krem and Supergirl is on the trail.

Hoping this book somehow rights after that first issue.
ACTION COMICS #1035
Writers: PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON and SEAN LEWIS
Artists: DANIEL SAMPERE and SAMI BASRI
Cover: DANIEL SAMPERE
Variant Cover: JULIAN TOTINO TEDESCO

Superman keeps the abandoned Warworld weapon out of the hands of anyone who might misuse it. But now the Justice League questions his judgment. It's time for Clark Kent to put up or shut up. In "Tales of Metropolis," the Guardian comes to the city. Is this another step toward Future State?

Could the abandoned weapon be the chunk of Source Wall?

And this going to lead to a 'Superman can't be trusted' angle that will lead into him abandoning Earth? Given the ongoing mini-series with the Authority on the shelves this very month, we know he won't be on Earth for long.

At least writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson will give us some Clark Kent!
SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL #3
Writer: TOM TAYLOR
Artist: JOHN TIMMS
Cover: JOHN TIMMS
Variant Cover: INHYUK LEE

Jonathan Kent hasn't been Superman for long, but he's upset some powerful people with his heroism. And the underground news source known as the Truth is helping Jon open his eyes to evils in the world that could be more powerful than the new Man of Steel. Continuing the brand-new saga of Superman from Tom Taylor, the writer of Nightwing, and John Timms, artist on Future State: Superman of Metropolis.

I suppose Jon will be a bit brasher and less polished Superman. I wonder if he will be more socially conscious like the early adventure of his father.

And I smell a rat. Could The Truth be helping point Jon to things he should be doing? Or are they manipulating him?
SUPERMAN AND THE AUTHORITY #4
Writer: GRANT MORRISON
Artist: MIKEL JANÍN
Cover: MIKEL JANIN
Variant Cover: GENE HA

Is the team ready for what's next?

Will the Man of Steel's new super-group fall apart before they even begin? The Ultra-Humanite has put together his own team of rogues designed to match the Authority fist for fist. This series comes to an explosive conclusion that will threaten to split the Man of Steel in half!

Is this a concurrent story with Action Comics? Or after?

All I know is I trust the creative team to do something spectacular! And Gene Ha on the variant!
BATMAN/SUPERMAN #22
Writer: GENE LUEN YANG
Artist: PAUL PELLETIER
Cover: IVAN REIS and DANNY MIKI
Variant Cover: GARY FRANK

SERIES FINALE!

Mr. Mxyzptlk resurrecting Calendar Man from his death during A-Day is causing some reality-rattling consequences. If Superman and Batman are going to prevent a fifth-dimensional god-being from compartmentalizing all of existence, they're going to need to turn to some unlikely allies.

I am so sad this book is ending.

What started out as a 'Batman Who Laughs' tie in has become one of the most enjoyable reads of my month. It feels like a World's Finest/Brave and Bold smash up. It is fun. And I need some fun in my comics.

I suppose ending with a Mxy story is the perfect way to go out. Paul Pelletier's smooth styles will look great here.

Shame to see this end.
CHALLENGE OF THE SUPER SONS #6
Writer: PETER J. TOMASI
Artist: EVAN STANLEY
Cover: SIMONE DI MEO
Variant Cover: NICK BRADSHAW

The Super Sons were trapped in the past by Felix Faust and Vandal Savage so they could unlock the secrets of the future. A young sorceress named Rora has teamed up with Superboy and Robin to get them back to their own time—if they can overcome their über-magical captors!

No big news in this solicit. I don't know Evan Stanley so I will at least learn of a new artist.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #68
Writers: BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS and RAM V
Artists: SIYA OUM and SCOTT GODLEWSKI
Cover: DAVID MARQUEZ
Variant Cover: ALEXANDER LOZANO

THE TOUR! The Justice League has some new members. And those members get a tour of the Hall of Justice from the legends who helped build it while they learn about the people who have dedicated their entire lives to its higher calling.

Merlin and his army of the aquatic dead have taken over Atlantis! Can Zatanna handle him and the horror she is hiding within?

This seems like a nice rest issue between big plots. I bet Brian Michael Bendis will crush a 'done in one' which seems more about character moments than action.

Of all the books solicited, I am looking forward to this one the most.
CHECKMATE #4
Writer: BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
Artist: ALEX MALEEV
Cover: ALEX MALEEV
Variant Cover: MATT TAYLOR

Leviathan has arrived. They have followers and agents all over the globe. What is the secret behind Leviathan's power? The all-new…Checkmate! A collection of the most dangerous spymasters must team up to take back the world. Who is the secret hero behind Checkmate?! Guest-starring Superman!

This solicit reads odd. Checkmate is the secret behind Leviathan's power?

And a secret hero leading Checkmate? Another Leviathan mystery?? Settle in everyone!

SUPERMAN '78 #2
Writer: ROBERT VENDITTI
Artist: WILFREDO TORRES
Cover: BEN OLIVER
Variant Cover: BRYAN HITCH

After a battle with a rampaging robot, Superman enlists an unlikely ally to crack the code behind who sent it. He needs an intelligent technological genius, and that can only mean one person: Lex Luthor!

This looks fantastic.

I guess we are finally going to see Brainiac in a Donner-verse Superman story!

I love the cover! Hackman Luthor!

I didn't know I needed this book until it was solicited!

Did I miss anything?

Great round-up. I agree it’s a shame Batman/Superman is going away but I’m sure we’ll get a new version once the current state of DC goes classic again.

I think that Checkmate solicit is badly written and that it’s clashing statements, it’s unlikely to be saying the new Checkmate is behind Leviathan, as they’re, well, new. The hero behind Checkmate? I’m guessing that King is Immortal Man… if only I’d remembered to say that in my review.

I like that the Action Comics solicit asks: ‘Is this another step toward Future State?’ as that implies Futile Slate isn’t inevitable.

Is that a version of Vartox at top right of the Aurhority image?

Of all these books. I suspect Justice League will be my favourite.

Well I guess "Tom Chaney" has found refuge with the "Ned Pepper Gang", who will be "Blonde Sonja's Ranger LeBeouf?". I still say someone should sue, I'd have to hire out the local minor league baseball stadium so no one would be startled by my guffaws.
Merrily,
