Sales Review: December 2012

Comic sales overall were strong last month and as usual ICv2 does a great job of reviewing things. Here is a link: http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/24778.html

Now this is the second month of the H'El on Earth crossover and the second Supergirl issue under that banner. The story has certainly been the subject of a ton of publicity so the hope would be that the super-books, especially Supergirl and Superboy, might get a little bump in sales.

Supergirl #15 maintained a small bump in sales from the pre-H'El sales. Overall sales were down just a bit from the last issue, selling about 450 fewer issues.

I guess having Supergirl kissing H'El plastered on the DC Comics website didn't bring in any sales.

Still, overall, Supergirl remains a decent selling book, healthy in this current market.

I do worry a bit about one of my favorite New 52 books, Demon Knights. Demon Knights #15 wrapped up Paul Cornell's run on the title, an epic brawl of 4 armies on Avalon.

The book has slipped to about 15K in sales. It would be a shame to see this book and this group of characters disappear into comics limbo. There is so much that still needs to be told about this group. Writer Robert Venditti has just come on board and the feel of the book remains the same ... solid. And Bernard Chang is just knocking it out of the park on art.

I hope this book gets a little bump and sticks around for a long time to come.

All this tells me is that we can expect more of the same from DC over the intermediate term (ergo Supergirl=The Incredible Hulk), all this tells DC is that there is money in jobbing out Supergirl.

Why would sales remaining flat in Superboy and Supergirl and dropping in Superman make DC think there was money in this direction? This is the "big event of the year" for the Superman family of books, the number of books being shipped should be going up if it was being well received.
