Reviews: My Adventures With Superman S3E3

My Adventures With Superman S3 E3, All's Fair in Love and W.O.R.M.S. ,came out this week and was another great episode. As I said last episode's review, somehow this show is able to balance plot progression, action, character growth, and humor. I mean in this episode we get dystopian future, 2 Silver Age homages, a musical number, and two super villains! Whew!

The axle the issue spins on is the will they/won't they Jimmy/Kara relationship. Kara took Jimmy's advice and has started dating other people but her knowledge of Earth and really of who she is herself is lacking. In comes Lois. Meanwhile, Jimmy is jealous from the outcome he asked for so has signed up for a new dating service W.O.R.M.S. Fun and mayhem and comic references ensue.

Amid that fun we have two more serious plots. First is character driven, Lois is worried that perhaps her relationship with Clark is moving too fast. She likes the idea of making the next step; she wants to. But she also likes how life is going now. How can she deal with those conflicting emotions.

Second, the Cyborg Superman reveals who he really is and shows himself to be a threat to everyone.

Throw in an amazing cliffhanger and you have another winner. On to some details.

Jimmy has decided to change Flamebird from not only a news outlet by a lifestyle site. So he decides to accept a free invitation to W.O.R.M.S. - the World Organization for Romantic Matchmaking Science. (The head scientists are Zazzala and Tazzala. Could they be Queen Bees?)

It is amusing since it seems his decision to go is because Kara is dating 'half of Metropolis'. He hopes if she sees him with others, she'll get jealous.

I love how exasperated Lois is during this scene. She was the one who yelled at Jimmy for doing all this to begin with. Now she is yelling because he is reacting so crazily from the outcome he forced.

But Lois isn't without her own problems.

She sees that Clark has made a miniature farmhouse with little figurines of them ... with a crib nearby!!!

A crib!!

You see a look of terror on her face. Is she ready for this step? Seeing the usually confident Lois sort of hem, haw, and sputter has been a great bit of characterization.

On the streets, 'Captain Hank Henshaw' takes out a purse snatcher by throwing him with super strength into a lamppost, this after the crook surrendered.

The bystanders are aghast and wonder if the robber is okay, after all Superman wouldn't do that.

Henshaw is extreme, saying Superman is weak on crime and this guy got what he deserved.

You are starting to see the cracks in Henshaw's psyche. Remember, when we saw him at the end of the first issue, he looked like there was less than more of him. He must be cracked.

I laughed out loud when Lois says that Jimmy is doing his dating service to make himself look more desirable than Kara and 'good luck' with that.

The way she says it, throaty and astonished, works perfectly.

Laugh out loud.

That said, when Kara can't answer simple dating questions (favorite movie, book, etc), Lois realizes Kara needs to discover herself.

Kara's answer to what is her style? Klukor and Horu-Kanu. A relatively deep cut to the comics, name dropping two martial art styles from Krypton.

I love how the book looks into the comics for some inspiration, like last episodes cover homage.

We have met Bizarro and Cyborg Superman so far this season.

Maybe Krypto is next? Clark meets a white dog while rescuing a boat and wonders about adopting him.

With Krypto in the cultural zeitgeist, why not enter him in the multimedia.

At W.O.R.M.S., Jimmy is hit on pretty strongly by 'Gigi' who exposes him to genetic mutagens.

No big mystery here Gigi is given her name and those animal print accessories.

I like how Jimmy is irresistible in this universe as well as the James Gunn movie one.

When the Silver Banshee steals some tech, Henshaw arrives. One banshee cry later and we see a portion of the flesh covering his cybernetics on his face be ripped away. Furious, he goes in for a killing shot only to have Superman step in between.

This all happens in a park filled with bystanders who pull out their phones to record.

Gigi's mutagens turn Jimmy into a wolfman. Nice reference to a Jimmy transformation! In the classic comic, he is cured by a Supergirl kiss. But no such luck here.

Later we see a shot of Jimmy with stretchy arms like Elastic Lad too!

When Superman gets the upper hand in the cyborg fight, Henshaw begins warming up some hand beam only to have some drones encase him in a force field.

But the jig is up. Everyone in the park has seen two things. Henshaw is a cyborg. And he was ready to kill.

This subplot moved pretty fast!

Now there has been some fun and some drama.

The last thing I suspected was a musical number.

In the mall we hear Kara and Lois trade lyrics seeing about the future. Kara is excited about all the opportunities! Lois is scared of the next step, she likes her 'current chapter'.

A musical number!

Incredible.

At Lexcorp, we see news programs calling Henshaw 'the Cyborg Superman'.

Henshaw seems ready to thrash everyone around him, including Lex. He knows he has power and he can do whatever he wants. But Lex has a kill switch to keep Henshaw in line.

How many times have we seen mad scientists create an overly powerful being thinking these creatures will fall in line and be obedient? From Frankenstein to Pokemon's MewToo, it never works out.

As anticipated, Gigi is Giganta and she grabs Jimmy going on a Kong like romp around the city and then up the Daily Planet building.

Great take on Giganta. I love it.

Lois and Kara don't join the fun because Kara is too busy telling Lois about all the guys on the dating app who have liked Kara. And they all have a pic of themselves on a fishing trip.

Lois mocks 'they're all gonna have fish pictures'.

Dating humor in a Superman cartoon!

The laughs keep coming. When the W.O.R.M.S. are able to undo Giganta's enlargement, Superman scoops her up and flies her to safety. She makes a pass at him too!

Love how he short circuits it by saying he is in a committed relationship.

Superman in this is quite charming.

But after all the fun and shenanigans, we close with a pretty wild button scene.

In a dark future, we see Kryptonian robot sentries flying around a city on fire.

Then a rebel group, clearly led by a bald and scarred Lex, slaps a time device on a Superboy (who looks suspiciously like Conner') and tells him the only way to help is to change time and stop this future from happening.

How did this happen? Is Lex responsible? Henshaw? Brainiac?

Great ending.

I am loving this show. I like how Supergirl is being treated here. I love the mix of humor and character development and action. But how can you not love a Supergirl/Lois musical number??
