I have been doing this blog for a while and every so often a year comes around where Supergirl seems to be everywhere. This is one of those years. Perhaps boosted by the Superman movie and the concommitant 'Summer of Superman' in the comics, Kara has had a very good year. She has been on the big screen. She has an upcoming movie. She has a solo title on the racks. This is not one of the leaner years and I have seen plenty over my time here.
So to set the stage, today I will review the big news of her movie, my commissions and cons this year, and then comic honorable mentions. Settle in ... this is a long one.
As this blog is really comic focused, tomorrow and the following day we will countdown the top ten Supergirl comic moments of the year.
Still, Milly Alcock is a great actress. She looks fantastic in the uniform. The visuals look good. The action looks good. And the end bit of the trailer - Kara, the sun behind her, no duster coat - makes me hope this is a redemption story. That she comes out of the haze and depression and realizes she is a hero.
Moving on, I had an incredibly successful con season this year.
Commission prices are sort of skyrocketing meaning the chances of me affording one is becoming slim. Incredible, between Terrificon and Granite State Comicon I was able to snag four. And each of them is pretty special.
Perhaps the biggest news for the character was her drunken cameo at the end of James Gunn's Superman. I wrote down my thoughts back in July and they really haven't changed. "Truth. Justice. Whatever." is hardly inspiring.
The teaser trailer just dropped 3 weeks ago and I wrote at length about it then. You can read that here.
I am not surprised she is the cursing drunk girl. The movie is based on Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow. The saucy 'Look Out' very early teaser poster, again focusing on her drinking and her misbehavior cemented it. Krypto peeing on Superman to open the trailer isn't subtle.
And I am still pretty perplexed by screenplay writer Ana Nogueira saying that she couldn't wrap her head around a character so sunny. Tell me you haven't read a Supergirl comic past 1970 without telling me.

Kerry Gammill was such a big part of the Triange Era, doing lots of Supergirl covers then.
Scott Kolins drew her in Justice League 3001.
Walt Simonson is a legend.
And Dave Wachter was unknown to me, a TMNT artist recommended to me by friends and his piece is incredible.
But this sure looks like it could be an Absolute version of our hero. I mean why put this girl in the book if not to majke us wonder and wait.
And I started gathering some signatures on the current Supergirl book, running into Joelle Jones and Chrissie Zullo at cons.
I also feel very lucky that I got to see Jim Shooter before he passed and gush to him about his Legion books. You can go to my con recap posts to see more loot.
I didn't really do a post on Rhode Island Comic Con but trust me, it wasn't a great experience and I probably won't be going again unless there is a once-in-a-lifetime comic guest there.
That said, the main reason I went this year was to meet Alex Maleev and gush about Event Leviathan, a particular passion of mine as long-time readers of this blog might remember.
Okay ... finally ... let's see some of the best Supergirl comic moments of 2025. Here are the honorable mentions!
Honorable Mention: "Absolute Kara?" - Absolute Superman 5
It is hard to elevate this past the Honorable Mention level because frankly I have no idea if this is Kara or if Jason Aaron plans on introducing us to an Absolute Supergirl.
But this sure looks like it could be an Absolute version of our hero. I mean why put this girl in the book if not to majke us wonder and wait.
Honorable Mention: "Satan Girl, like a bad penny" - Supergirl #3
There isn't much to this one. I just love Satan Girl. She has turned up in almost every iteration of Supergirl and so I was not surprised when Sophie Campbell brought her version into the current DCU.
Campbell's book has been a deep dive into the Supergirl mythos and a true love letter to the character.
Honorable Mention: 'Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top" - Kal-El-Fornia Love Special #1
I sort of liked this story by George Mann where Kara felt like a young girl chilling out on a summer day, heading to the beach and enjoying a hot dog. I loved this costume change panel where putting on the costume meant putting on more clothes! too funny.
Throw in a 'how has it not happened in the 40 years he has been around' Supergirl team-up with John Constantine and you have a silly winner. Trevis Mercer's art was slick.
Honorable Mention: 'Everything Happened ... Everything" - New History of the DC Universe 2
I was truly excited when I heard Mark Waid was going to be writing a definitive New History of the DC Universe. Instead it became a list-icle of almost everything that has happened. Waid seemed to try to knit all continuities together which unfortunately made for some bizarre decisions.
One thing that was weird was saying the DC Universe wasn't a multiverse. Then saying 'well it was sort of a multiverse' meaning the Crisis happened and Supergirl died. This led to some legerdemain explaining her re-arrival as being resurrected by Darkseid.
Still, Waid (always a Kara fan) talks about how she died in the Crisis and her loss was profoundly felt.
Nice page by Brad Walker.
Honorable Mention: "Saving Lesla" - Supergirl #3
The first mini-arc of the new title ends not with a punch but with a hug. In the set-up of a theme, this Supergirl is more about kindness and working with her opponents rather than punching first and asking questions later. Lesla did a lot of damage to Midvale, to Supergirl's reputation, to Kara herself. But Supergirl recognizes that so much of Lesla's acts are born of trauma. Why not extend a helping hand? After all, the motto is 'Help, Hope, and Compassion for all'.
Whew!
So ends day one of the annual review.
Tell me your thoughts about the movie cameo.
What do we think of the Crisis being back in?
Tomorrow we start the top ten countdown!

I hadn’t heard about the film writer’s comments. What a sad person she sounds.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I always enjoy your end-of-year musings, especially when it’s been a bountiful one.
