DC Comics August 2022 Solicits

The August solicits for DC Comics came out last week. Here is a link to Newsarama's coverage for the complete listing:
https://www.gamesradar.com/dc-comics-august-2022-solicitations-covers/

There are some fun things this month including 'swimsuit' variants on some covers. But there wasn't much new that grabbed me here. I really like the DC books I am collecting right now. I'd love to be collecting more. On to the super-books.

ACTION COMICS #1046
Written by PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON
Art by DALE EAGLESHAM
Backup story art by DAVID LAPHAM
Cover by LUCIO PARRILLO
Variant cover by LEE BERMEJO
Swimsuit variant cover by STANLEY "ARTGERM" LAO

The climactic battle for the fate of Warworld is fast approaching, and the Authority is finally reunited…but no longer as allies! As Superman fights to retrieve a mythical ancient weapon that can free the people of Warworld, Natasha Irons, Midnighter, and O.M.A.C. fight for the souls of their own teammates. Meanwhile, in the Fortress of Solitude: it's all hands on deck as the entire Super-family joins forces to recover the Genesis fragment from one of Superman's earliest classic enemies!

Now this is solicit!

We can start with the Kara swimsuit cover. Gorgeous!

But the blurb is great. Sounds like Apollo, Enchantress, and Lightray aren't fighting for the good guys anymore. And you know that Supergirl is going to be involved in that Fortress battle. Bring it on!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #6
Written by MARK WAID
Art by TRAVIS MOORE
Cover by DAN MORA
Variant cover by TERRY DODSON

THE FLYING GRAYSON FLIES THROUGH TIME! The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel might have been victorious in their battle against the dreaded Devil Nezha (but were they, though? More on that to come, kids…) but there's one thing they forgot in all the madness…Dick! Robin the Boy Wonder is lost in time like some kind of chrono-Home Alone…and to find him, Batman and Superman will need to get creative!

We knew the good guys would win so no surprise there. But this idea of a sort of epilogue sounds fun.

Given what we have seen so far, my guess is Mark Waid will be showcasing some of DC's historical stars as Robin pinwheels through time! I better see Balloon Buster!

And I love the Dodson cover! Give me the Batgirl/Supergirl World's Finest please!

SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL #14
Written by TOM TAYLOR
Art by CIAN TORMEY
Cover by TRAVIS MOORE
Variant cover by RAFAEL SARMENTO

Henry Bendix has threatened and manipulated and killed without consequence. Now, after a shocking coordinated attack on Earth's heroes, it's time for Superman, Jay, and the Revolutionaries to strike back. But first, Jay Nakamura must embrace his powers and become the hero Jon knows he can be.

Looks like Jay gets a costume.

As I said in my last Superman review, I don't know if I like Jon fighting along side unrepentant killers. Let's hope he is inspiring them!

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #6
Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
Art and cover by SCOTT GODLEWSKI
Variant cover by TRAVIS MOORE

The blockbuster shocking conclusion to the Gold Lantern saga. Which legendary DC villain is behind this great darkness that is about to destroy all the ages of heroes all at once? Find out right here: all this AND the future of the Legion of Super-Heroes is revealed!

Ooooh ... a legendary villain! My guess? Krona!!!

And way back in the first issue, I noted a similarity between Naomi and Gold Lantern's costumes. I wondered if they were somehow connected. This variant cover hammers it home. Will it be revealed that this time I'm right?

DC VS. VAMPIRES #8
Written by MATTHEW ROSENBERG and JAMES TYNION
Art by OTTO SCHMIDT
Cover by GUILLEM MARCH
Variant cover by NATHAN SZERDY

The battle for Earth continues in this bloodthirsty series! The surviving heroes put their various plans in motion in their last attempt to save humanity! The Birds of Prey are out for blood and head back into the heart of the vampire kingdom: Gotham City! Supergirl must cross a vampire-infested ocean and Green Arrow's mission is…just too horrifying to mention!

Supergirl crossing an ocean of vampires just sounds like fun.

Getting to see Otto Schmidt draw Kara, even if it is in this wacky horror title is worth the price already.

And that's it.
Did I miss anything?

  1. That cowl on Jay’s costume - presumably it’s also a hood - reminds me of one of Phantom Girl’s, which seems appropriate. He definitely looks less sinister without the glasses to slip down his nose.

  2. Another Elseworld "Supergirl" will appear in DCeased: War of the Undead Gods starting in August. Several pages featuring Supergirl are previewed in DC Connect #25:

    https: //media . lunardistribution .com /files/dc_connect_25.pdf

She's featured in zombie condition on the 1:25 ratio variant cover by Francisco Mattina.

(I wouldn't buy that cover even if it was cover price, and it won't be: ratio variants sell for a lot of money.)

  3. I like to think, insofar as this “swim suit cover” is concerned that Supergirl put thirty minutes of thought into the hat, and about five minutes into the bathing suit...:)
I hope they send Supergirl back into the past to chase down Robin, that has endless mirth potential to it...but boo DC Comics for jobbing her out again in DCeased...just ONCE can’t she be immune to something??
She has gone from being one of the strongest most invulnerable brings in the DCU to wilting like a daffodil at the mere rustle of Count Dracula’s ermine cape!
As for DC vs Vampires, I am just hate reading it at this point, the rule at DC is thar if Superman goes down, then Supergirl cannot survive him either, because that would mean she was braver smarter or just better than him, and a legacy female can never exceed the masculine template, such is the ongoing sexism at DC Comics.
But what the hell, at least she is still being included, after “ Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow” I have learned to set the bar low.

  4. Thanks for comments.

Good call on the hooded Phantom Girl vibe Mart. I thought it seemed familiar.

I didn't even look at the DCeased solicit so thanks for tip. I don't think I'll be getting it.

DC v Vampires seems insane. I don't think I should be getting it. But maybe this is a Supergirl I can root for?

  5. Anj, the fact that Wonder Woman, a demigoddess, of all people was essentially turned by using her own lasso says so much about how dumb DC vs Vampires is.

  6. Oh yeah Wondie got jobbed out bigtime in DC vs Vampires shocking considering her elevated status derived from the movies that was pretty shocking. I Am assuming sooner or later it ends with usual misbegotten DCU hatefest, the Batgod will rise from the dead, lay out all comers and rule the universe. Never let it be said that DC does not give what the people do not want...

  7. Didn’t know where to ask this, but any thoughts on Tom King’s Supergirl run being up for an Eisner?
