DC Comics December 2021 Solicits

The DC Comics solicits for July came out a while ago and as usual, there are some highlights and lowlights. As usual, I advise you take a look at all the solicits to see the whole docket. Here is a link to Newsarama's coverage:
https://www.gamesradar.com/dc-solicitations-december-2021/

The Elseworlds (are they still called that?) titles sound very interesting. And I continue to be impressed with the Philip Kennedy Johnson Action Comics series and this solicit sounds great. No surprise, the Supergirl solicit has me intrigued and concerned.

Let's get going.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW #6
Written by TOM KING
Art and cover by BILQUIS EVELY
Variant cover by STEVE RUDE

The traumatic secrets of Supergirl's past are revealed as our heroine races to the edge of the universe to escape Krem and his latest weapon! The murderer of young Ruthye's father has gotten his hands on a Mordru globe and plans to use it to make our hero disappear forever. Can she save herself and the young girl's future in the process? She'll need the help of her trusty steed, Comet the Superhorse!

Just what we needed, more trauma in Supergirl's past. Tom King certainly knows one note and he sings it well. I just don't understand it.

Frankly his track record makes me worry that his incarnation of Comet is either going to be something icky or is headed to some depressing end. You know Comet, the goofy part of the Silver Age Supergirl? Let's see if we can make him dark.

The last issue was just so shockingly depressing that I have little optimism left for this.

Let's look at the rest of the Super books.

ACTION COMICS #1038
Written by PHILLIP KENNEDY JOHNSON and SHAWN ALDRIDGE
Art by DANIEL SAMPERE and ADRIANA MELO
Cover by DANIEL SAMPERE
Variant cover by JULIAN TOTINO TEDESCO

"The Warworld Saga," part three. Everything changes! After the heart-stopping events of Action Comics #1037, Superman and the surviving members of the Authority see a side of Warworld they never knew existed. In the lower catacombs, Superman finds another survivor of the lost Phaelosian race of Krypton, a scientist turned enslaved gladiator with much to teach Superman of his new home, including how to survive...and maybe, in time, how to escape. Meanwhile, Superman's quest to turn the hordes of Warworld against their masters begins.

This is a very powerful cover showing the rough state Superman is in.

The Superman Worlds of War Future State book was one of the better ones. And we know that ended with Superman leading a revolution. The Authority is there! And the idea of an area of the planet which is unknown makes sense. It's a planet!

Looking forward to this.

SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL #6
Written by TOM TAYLOR
Art and cover by JOHN TIMMS
Variant cover by INHYUK LEE

Superman has recovered from the devastating attack against him. After the life-changing events of issue #5, Jon Kent and his new ally Jay Nakamura are ready to strike back. They are on a collision course with the type of power that is used to swatting problems out of the way. But Superman is not so easily swatted!

Not much to report here. This is a pretty basic solicit.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #71
Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS and RAM V
Art by PHIL HESTER and SUMIT KUMAR
Cover by YANICK PAQUETTE and NATHAN FAIRBAIRN
Variant cover by ALEXANDER LOZANO

The Royal Flush Gang hatched one of the most elaborate plans in the history of the DC Universe, and now we know that all of it was a prelude to the crime of this and maybe even the next century. How does it connect to the trial of Black Adam?

When all seems lost, hope can still be found! With Wonder Woman now by their side, the Justice League Dark have survived to fight another day. Merlin is only getting started—can the team still prove they have the magic within to defeat the medieval mage?

I don't think Superman is still involved with the League at this point. But I like the team and I like the Royal Flush Gang so this book looks like a win.

JUSTICE LEAGUE 2021 ANNUAL #1
Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
Art and cover by SANFORD GREENE
Variant by FELIPE MASSAFERA
$5.99 US | 48 pages | Variant $6.99 US (Card stock)

The return of Wonder Woman! Wait, what's that? Also, the return of…OMAC! Jack Kirby's greatest creation, the One-Man Army Corps, returns to the DC universe just in time to team up with the reunited Justice League to stop secret forces of evil from gathering! Join Eisner Award winner Sanford Greene as he brings the legacy of the League to life leading into Justice League vs. the Legion of Super-Heroes!

And then this bombshell!

Wonder Woman returning to the main DCU!

The League fighting the Legion which has been missing since the Future State rollout. Will there be a new Legion title? Is this the Legion from Future State? Or from before? Or new?

Definitely looking forward to this!

And then the Elseworlds books!

DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL #3
Written by TOM TAYLOR
Art and cover by YASMINE PUTRI
Variant by JOSHUA MIDDLETON
1:25 variant by YASMINE PUTRI

War is on the horizon as a series of assassinations has rocked the lands. The Kingdom of Storms is gathering its allies with eyes on the destruction of Kal-El and his family. What secret does the Dark Knight learn that could be the key to everything?

I am really liking the aesthetic of this book.

Is that Supergirl on the bottom of the cover?

Who has been assassinated??

I typically trust Tom Taylor. Really looking forward to this.

WORLD OF KRYPTON #1
Written by ROBERT VENDITTI
Art by MICHAEL AVON OEMING
Cover by MICO SUAYAN
Variant by A. D'AMICO
1:25 variant cover by FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA

A modern telling of one of the most storied periods in comics! Krypton is a utopia admired across the universe for its achievements in science and culture, but its shining towers and regal people conceal a planet rotting at its core. When a catastrophic event befalls Krypton's natural world, it points toward a mass extinction in the making. Jor-El, head of Krypton's revered Science Council, embarks on a mission to save a world that may already have passed the point of no return. Shining new light on the famous characters of Krypton's past—including Jor-El, General Dru-Zod, and even a young Kara Zor-El—World of Krypton combines action, cosmic wonder, and political intrigue in a story as much about our world as the one on the page.

Again, also looking forward to this as well. I very much like Robert Venditti. I don't know if this is the new origin or if this is an Elseworlds, I can't wait to read it.

I mean, baby Kara on the variant cover? I'm sold.

ONE-STAR SQUADRON #1
Written by MARK RUSSELL
Art and cover by STEVE LIEBER
Variant by STEVE PUGH

Who you gonna call? One-Star Squadron! Meet DC's superhero team where heroism meets capitalism. This ragtag group of heroes led by Red Tornado is here to provide service with a smile. All you must do is send a request via their on-demand hero app and they'll answer any call. Whether it's a children's birthday party or an alien invasion, no job is too small or too big!
Brought to you by Eisner nominee Mark Russell (The Flintstones, Wonder Twins, Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles) and Eisner winner Steve Lieber (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen), you'll want to invest early in this one-of-a-kind miniseries that promises a story filled with heart, heroism, and humor.

Not a super book but Power Girl is there and I like Karen too!

This book sounds like a hoot, sort of Cameo with super-heroes. The funny thing is I have unabashed love for so many of these ragtag heroes. Power Girl! Firehawk! The Heckler! The Flying Fox!

I need a few laughs in my life. So looking forward to this a ton.

Did I miss anything?

  1. Of all the books here, the ones I’m most looking forward to are One-Star Squadron (I wonder if Zeep the Living Sponge will show up) and the JL Annual.

As much as I have enjoyed Action Comics of late, I’m really not looking forward to an extended sojourn on Warworld

  2. A few other relevant books might include:

Superman '78 - I'm not following the book, but so far you reviewed the debut issue.

Justice League Incarnate, which features President Superman. I'm curious enough to pick it up.

Superman vs. Lobo is concluding. I haven't been reading that one, and for the October solicits you mentioned you weren't either.

How did I miss Superman '78??

  4. What did poor Comet ever do to merit inclusion in this narrative dumpster fire? DId DC TELL Tom King don't forget Comet?? It's only eight issues (even if they ruin Supergirl past all hope) the probably don't have time to get around to Streaky the Supercat.
Anj man, remember "Superman '78" it's our last best and perhaps only hope to get Helen Slater's Kara Zor El back in the mix! And even if they don't take that bait, it's still worth reading...

    :)

  5. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #7 (on sale in January) was also covered in the Newsarama/ Games Radar article. Maybe it was added later.

I'm hoping for the best (or at least the tolerable), but expecting the worst as this series nears the end. On the plus side, I will say that there are some very nice covers coming up on issues 6 and 7.

  6. I don't think he will write Comet that way.

But then again I never thought I'd Supergirl condoning lapidation and here we are.

  8. I want to be excited for World of Krypton. I absolutely love Kara backstories. But the latest arcs really sucked the joy out of Supergirl for me.

That little smiling tot isn't going to grow up to be the Kara Zor-El I have known and loved. Hope, help and compassion for all. It's going to grow up to be a depressed cursing bad drinker that get numb to compassion and watches people bludgeon bad guys to death for recreation and then goes miserable to the moon to die with her dog because she were unlikable to humans.

Why would I want the backstory to this Supergirl?
