New Tom King Tweet

When Tom King was announced as the writer on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, I was a little worried. Okay, maybe more than a little worried.

And then he tweeted about how great his new character was going to be in the mini-series making me nervous again

Earlier this week I read his Superman Up In The Sky trade and was surprised at how he seemed to understand Superman.

And yesterday Tom King put out this tweet. And for a second, there was hope.
Here is the tweet text:

First look at an incredible @BilquisEvely page from Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow. It’s an All Star Superman take on the character, an ambitious epic to show again why Supergirl is stands proudly, uniquely at the heart of DCU and really at the heart of all comics. I love it.

There is a lot to like here.

First off, the art by Bilquis Evely was never in question. Her work is breathtaking. And seeing a page where Kara is protecting someone by subjecting herself to gunfire is just gorgeous.

But the content of the tweet sound very positive.

Supergirl is the heart of the DCU and the heart of all comics?

I know that's how I feel but has been a while since we have seen that take.

The book is an All Star Superman take on the character? I mean All Star Superman is a beloved and holy text for me. To have a King say that this book will be like that ... well ... it makes me hopeful.

King bats about .500 for me. But I hadn't seen him do optimistic before Up In The Sky. And now this.

Fingers crossed.

  1. Here's hoping. Although (and please don't judge me harshly for this), All-Star Superman doesn't do anything for me. It just seems a bit … off, like it's trying to be something it's not.

  2. I'm not optimistic, Supergirl swinging a sword is just wrong. I'd love it if the Silver Age Supergirl would spontaneously materialize, take this version by the shoulders, give her a shake & shout "What Were You Thinking!!???"
This being a miniseries, I strongly suspect this is designed to "upgrade" Supergirl to Superwoman (where she can effectively be forgotten) and a new Supergirl with a new backstory etc etc etc...

"I doubt none of these speculations" to quote the late Jim Carroll.

I don't have a problem with Supergirl becoming Superwoman if it is done as the logical result of growth and maturity in the character. I would also have no problem with her training King's new character to be her successor in the role of Supergirl.
