First off is the blu-ray version of her movie from 1984. Here is a link for details:

This special edition of Supergirl presents the film's International Cut, remastered in High Definition for Blu-ray, along with the rare Director's Cut on a bonus DVD.
As most know, it has been years since I have seen the movie. I have always wanted to review it here on the site. Now it looks like I'll finally get the chance. I have only heard rumblings of the director's cut version so I can't wait to see that.
I am just amazed that the interest in Kara Zor-El has reached such a peak that the campy movie from the 80's is getting such a slick re-issuing. I can't wait to see Helen Slater gracefully flying and saying she doesn't scare easily again.
Artgerm just got off of a run on the Supergirl comic which was so gorgeous that sales on the book jumped nearly 10K. Increduble.
Perhaps recognizing that his take on the characters seems to resonate, Sideshow Collectibles is putting out a statue based on Artgerm's work. Here is a link:

I can only hope this is somewhat affordable.
I mean look at this picture of the piece.
How can I not want this on a shelf somewhere??
Just incredible!
Apparently a custom print has been solicited with the statue.
I am a complete sucker for the blue shirt/red skirt combo. This is lovely.
But wait there's more.
Supergirl will again be on a SDCC swag bag.
And on a 'new' DC Superhero Girls bag sporting her new look.
For everyone heading to SDCC, good luck procuring one of these!
As for me, I better start looking for couch cushion money to support these upcoming purchases.
Surely some kind soul will get you one of these goodies!

I own the International / Director's cut on DVD, and speaking as a Supergirl fan, while it doesn't add much to the overall movie, there
are some GREAT Helen Slater / Supergirl moments that in hindsight speaks to me as excellent "they get Supergirl's character!" moments.
And yes, hoping you do get it and get a chance to review; I'm quite interested in your opinion on it, Anj. Here's hoping it'll be
available (soon) north of the 49th as well!
Now I only wish I could find the Supergirl Movie OST on CD as well. I'm a COMPLETE sucker for Jerry Goldsmith's beautiful theme song.
> I am a complete sucker for the blue shirt/red skirt combo.
+9000 to that sentiment!

Ah Helen Slater IF ONLY the Salkinds had the common sense to put Supergirl in a syndicated TV show, Slater would've gone on in the part for seven years easy. :). As such in the film she is literally throwing haymakers in every seem desperately trying to redeem it all from mediocrity, her grit and talent stand tall with me I can pay her no higher compliment.
ReplyDelete:)

I keep hoping Slater will be at a con I'm attending so I can basically say that we weren't worthy.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the movie to be available.
Sadly, that statue is $525.
ReplyDeleteTo add insult to that mortal financial injury, it includes a swap-out short-haired option that's even more stunning:

I saw the movie in the theater when it came out, and then saw it again. I then rented it when it hit the rentals and was surprised to find that a lot of the stuff I liked was cut out!
ReplyDeleteI will agree that the film as a whole should have been better than the sum of its parts. With heavy hitters like Peter O'Toole, Mia Farrow, and Faye Dunaway, the film should have done very well. Unfortunately, it was a campy film played way too over the top with respect to the plot.
Slater shines as Kara, bringing both the naivete of a girl unaccustomed to decent and the wonder of an ordinary girl who suddenly discovers that she can do amazing things. The very best scenes show how much Slater grasps the essential goodness of Kara, who persists in believing that people will do the right thing if they can only see it.
I very much enjoyed the show in the theaters and have been consistently disappointed in the network airings. I am looking forward to the new DVD release.
I liked the original Artgerm cover but her face doesn’t translate to a statue, it doesn’t look like Supergirl... she looks like a British toff rather than the Girl (Next Door) of Steel. And why the short-hair option? When does she have short hair in the comics? Swappable hairstyles is soooo soppy!
ReplyDeleteNow, if there were a Campus acuddle-Bun...
I saw the $525 price tag.
ReplyDeleteSo much for adding that to the collection!
Maybe it’s Baby Spice as Supergirl, Mart?
All the talk is making me more pumped to see the movie.
I've had the laser disc and the DVD of Supergirl. Missed out on the VHS, I guess. I keep throwing money at it, and have pre-ordered the BluRay combo pack.

Found this in a comment over at supergirl.tv :
ReplyDeleteThere will be a Supergirl 1984 movie panel at SDCC. The scheduled guests include...
Helen Slater (of course), Marc McClure (Jimmy Olsen) and Warner Archive Collectible podcasters George Feltenstein, Matt Patterson, and D. W. Ferranti. Moderator Gary Miereanu will have goodies for some lucky fans.

Here's a Supergirl item that may have been overlooked by some fans: DC Comics finally released a collected Book Four of Peter David's Supergirl run last week. Received mine on Saturday, after pre-ordering it over a year ago.

Thanks for the heads up on the existence of the director's cut, Anj. I never did see the movie, although I did read the William Kotzwinkle novelization and the comic book adaptation. I just ordered one of the last reasonably priced copies off of Amazon and can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteI have the Limited Edition DVD set from the year 2000 - #46,522 of 50,000. Don't get excited - it's not worth anything. I just like to have stuff around.
ReplyDeleteMartin, do you have the same Limited Edition? I think the International and Director's cuts have been sold in a variety of packages over the years. Just wondering if we are in the same 50,000 Club.
Guess I'll be getting the Blu-ray edition for the HD quality, even though many of my better DVDs look quite good. I think my TV needs to be upgraded to tell the difference.
The 2000 release at least has THX/5.1 sound.
KET - did Amazon ship Supergirl Book Four in a floppy envelope, or in rigid cardboard like they used to? I stopped buying TPBs from Amazon once they started going with the floppy approach, as every TPB arrived creased.
Oops, it wasn't Martin, it was the first Anonymous who I was asking if he or she has the Limited Edition.
ReplyDelete"did Amazon ship Supergirl Book Four in a floppy envelope, or in rigid cardboard like they used to?"
ReplyDeletePadded envelope. Item still arrived in pristine condition.

It's already up for pre-order. Whopping $525. Gorgeous looking figure though so I'll definitely be buying it for my Supergirl Collection.

"$525 price tag"
ReplyDeleteToo rich for my blood.
Hmm..
ReplyDeleteMaybe I better order that Supergirl DVD!
> put Supergirl in a syndicated TV show, Slater would've gone on in the part for seven years easy. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, the road not travelled. And I STILL hope the Supergirl TV series will give us a scene where Melissa Benoist inadvertently
walks in on Helen Slater trying on her Supergirl costume in a fangirl moment :) That'd TOTALLY put a silly grin on my face!
> Sadly, that statue is $525.
As tempting as that figure is, too rich for my blood as well :,(

Hope someone puts up a recording of that panel!

On some alternate Earth, no reason we can't have that story line.
Or it could be a good old "Imaginary Story."
