The news about Brian Michael Bendis' Superman run is starting to ooze out a bit and more and more it seems like Supergirl will have a role in it and that makes me happy. The latest was tweeted out by DC on their instagram profile.
It shows Superman and Supergirl flying over the city, battling whoever the big bad of Superman Man of Steel is.
Whoever he is, he's big and he wields a pretty mean axe.
How great to see the cousins in action together.
The official instagram post doesn't add too much more to the conversation. But given this is Maguire, we can assume it is in Man of Steel #4.
Maguire has tweeted out the image and said it is a double page spread which makes me think this is really going to pop off the page!
Further news came out over on Bleeding Cool when this image of the six covers to Man of Steel are now joined by a tagline that "Superman's past has come to destroy his future!' Here is the link!

Hmmm ... what if Kryptonite kills other races with the rapidity it kills Kryptonians?
Just looking closer that the individual covers, I really love this one with Supergirl and Superman streaking into action. And look ... red trunks!!!!
Love it!
This one also stood out.
Bendis has said all along that he isn't going to destroy and rewrite Superman's past. He is building on it.
This cover makes me think he means it.
After all ...
It looks like the cover to Grant Morrison's Action Comics #5.
Anyways, I really hope Supergirl plays a big role in the story. And I hope she gets a book of her own after the dust settles.
I'm still wary of Bendis, but there're some signs to be hopeful (at the very least his Superman can't possibly be worse than Miller's version... Right?)
ReplyDeleteKara being a part of this also makes me happy. It was about time a retelling kept her in mind. I feared she'd be ignored again. Here, her appearance is treated as one of the key elements on Clark Kent's life, placed on an equal footing with Kal-El leaving Krypton, discovering his heritage, falling in love with Lois, founding the JLA and battling Doomsday. As it should be.
That panel is fantastic. Superman just uppercutting the baddie and Supergirl winding up for another blow. The good, old one-two.
I wonder how the new villain being tied to the destruction of Krypton will play out. It may be a unnecessary wrinkle or an enriching addition to the mythos. Regardless, he must be powerful since two Kryptonians are needed to deal with him.
In spite of my issues with Bendis I'm glad that DC is assigning their newest, hottest writer and a bevy of great artists to Superman. It's like if they've just remembered Superman is supposed to be one of their flagship characters.

Let's hope so.
This seems good, but I’m just a bit confused about this being published at the same time as the Milker origin story. It’s also nice to see Supergirl involved.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note the February sales numbers are out and Supergirl’s numbers are back above 30k, so there’s that positive bit of information.
(Don’t know who Milker would be, I meant Miller.)
ReplyDelete"his seems good, but I’m just a bit confused about this being published at the same time as the Milker origin story."
ReplyDeleteI think Miller's story is an out-of-continuity tale.
But, yes, nowadays every comicbook writer seems to want to make their Superman origin tale canon.
"On a side note the February sales numbers are out and Supergirl’s numbers are back above 30k, so there’s that positive bit of information."
Which just shows how stupid and short-sighted her book's cancellation is.
MIller/JRJR Seems like a cash grab, out of continuity and edgy for that crowd,
ReplyDeleteAs for sales, post up on Thursday.
.
Hope Kara gets her due in this new landscape.
I'm really excited about Bendis run.
ReplyDeleteI'm really upset it seems we lost the Supergirl comic because of it.
I'm mostly upset about the pile of cancer that are commenting on issue 19 on DCComics twitterfeed, and I really hope that not a single one of them is a Supergirl fan, because if they are, they never understood the essence of the character.
Well, whatever happens story-wise, this Man of Steel series is certainly going to look good. That Bendis is working within established continuity is a good sign. I'm so tired of re-boots and all. And his (apparently) giving Supergirl a prominent role is encouraging.
ReplyDeleteI've read that this new villain had something to do with Krypton's destruction. A modern take on Black Zero, maybe?
By the way, if you're missing Artgerm's Supergirl covers, check out his Instagram page. He's done an exclusive variant cover for Action Comics 1000, featuring Superman and you-know-who. There are 3 versions: standard (with the current Action Comics logo), vintage (with a 1940s style logo) and sketch. Available at buymetoys.com
