Icon Heroes Supergirl Statue
Last week the Icon Heroes Supergirl Collector Statue was delivered into my hands. I had ordered it when first solicited and had paid it off layaway style. So it was just handed to me ... almost like it was free!
It is a fantastic statue! If someone is looking for an affordable Supergirl piece of merchandise, one that celebrates the television show, I would highly recommend this one. It retails for $65 so it isn't cheap. But in the statue format, that is a decent price for something so wonderful.
It comes in a clean large box which highlights its dynamic nature nicely. This is Supergirl soaring into action!
The statue is just that, Supergirl flying into action in a classic pose.
Poised on a metal post, it gives the sense of Supergirl flying. And it is a very decent size for the price, soaring majestically.
And the sculpt is great. That sort of soulful look on the Supergirl's face is very evocative of Melissa Benoist. You get the sense she is on a mission.
Because of how beautiful it is, I took pics from a number of angles.
So here is the 45 degree angle look. I know I am gushing a bit, but there is a sense of majesty. This is an iconic Super-pose. And I love the cape and hair streaking, giving the sense of flight.
I also love the position of the legs, with one cocked and bent at the knee. Just wonderful.
And then from the side you get the sense of how big this statue is.
From this angle, you get the sense that there is a bit of grace to this statue. That right hand held out the way it is as well as the rest of the body position is perfect.
And you get the sense of how wonderful the sculpt of the hair is, streaking behind her!
The back is fine with a smooth simple cape. But the details of the hair and the boots are great from this direction as well.
I apologize for this awful picture. The statue has found its spot, in the rapidly growing ‘Melissa Benoist’ section. The show has been popular enough to continue churning out merchandise. And I think another piece is right around the corner.
As I’ve said before, I probably need a new shelf! This one is packed.
A great addition to any collection. It's a beautiful figure.
ReplyDelete"The show has been popular enough to continue churning out merchandise."
Which is important. Haters who bash the character (because apparently "Kara Zor-El is annoying and redundant and contributes nothing and is a deadweight and takes Superman's uniqueness away from him so she shouldn't exist! We have a SuperMAN, don't need a SuperGIRL!") and shippers who can't stand the fact that the show isn't obligated to make their fanfiction canon can spew bile all across twitter as much as they like but as long as WB keeps making a profit, the show and the character will gon on.
Cannot tell you how tired I am of all the show bashing and shipper fantasies. Both go hand in hand and Otto schmidt drawing for that particular group more is just making things worse. It's making them think that DC will actually make it happen, I even saw tweets regarding it to bendis.
DeleteIt looks really nice. I didn't know that one existed. I preordered the Diamond Select DC TV Supergirl statue a while back. I'm getting second thoughts seeing how nice this one is.
ReplyDeleteI still think I like the face sculpt of the one I got better, but the flying pose of the one you got is sooo much better than the ice block foot of the one I'm getting.
Maybe one day I will pony up and get the flying one too.
"It's making them think that DC will actually make it happen, I even saw tweets regarding it to bendis."
ReplyDeleteI know what you're talking about and I also thought it was ridiculous. Here is Bendis talking about Kara being an important player and a blast to write about, and shippers harassing him with their "Make Supercorp canon!" garbage. No matter what Post-Flashpoint Kara and Lena are nothing like their Arrowverse counterparts. No matter what Kara and Lena have zero relationship in this continuity (Has Kara ever met Lex prior to the "Revenge" arc? I don't remember). No matter what Lena is way older and Kara is still underage. No matter what Kara is definitely straight. Oh, no, Bendis has to make their fanfic fantasies canon.
It reminds me when DC released a "Gotham City Garage" cover featuring Supergirl and Poison Ivy. Supercorp shippers right away thought it was being hinted Kara was bi and hoped that Lena was introduced soon. Jesus.
While I agree with anon regarding pushing ships etc is bs, I am not quite as certain regarding Supergirl's canon sexuality.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's true that Supergirl herself has always been placing herself as straight, the universe itself does anything but agree.
Going back through the history of Kara, she has only been looking for male love interests such as Dick Malverne, and that guy she married before she was killed in CoIE etc.
But what has the universe also provided her with? Superman's supercomputer said her perfect partner was a crossdressing girl. She had a relationship with a horse, not once but twice, and that horse was once coincidentally also a hermaphrodite. Harley also insinuated once that rumors in her circles were that Kara and Batgirl were romantically involved.
So while Kara is actively ever seeking male companionship, she has been happy in her relationships with other things. I have seen people peg her as pansexual. I kind of agree with that assessment, and it wouldn't surprise to one day see Kara come to the conclusion that the gender of her partner doesn't actually determine whether she is happy or not in her relationships.
"Cannot tell you how tired I am of all the show bashing and shipper fantasies."
ReplyDeleteWell, it does kind of go hand-in-hand with the enduring reality that superhero aspirations are always perceived differently when said hero is female. Gender politics continues to be desired as personal discretion for some, while others are using gender preference either as a badge of honor or a bludgeoning instrument these days. Sometimes it really does become "a woman's work is never done" type of situation these days.
As far as the Icon Heroes statue goes, the rendering really captures Melissa's visage quite well, and with a pose that looks like she's leaping right out of the series' original PR poster from 2015.
KET
That's a nice statue. Judging from these pictures, I don't think the earlier photos from Icon Heroes did it justice. And $65 isn't cheap, but when you consider what some other statues sell for these days, it's quite reasonable.
ReplyDeleteThe Kotobukiya Supergirl TV statue with the interchangeable arms has also recently been released. Then there's the PVC TV statue from Diamond Select that Anonymous referred to, and the Joelle Jones Cover Girl statue, and the Tweeterhead '70s statue, and....All together now, it looks like 2018 will be the year of Supergirl (merchandise-wise, anyway).
Wonder if anyone has ever considered making a Supergirl figure based on Helen Slater's portrayal? Sure, the movie was over 30 years ago, but there are fairly recent Christopher Reeve Superman statues, and there are lines of action figures and statues based on the Adam West Batman TV show. I've even seen YouTube videos of George Reeves Superman statues, although I believe these were privately commissioned.
I would guess that the movie's reputation as a flop is the main reason we haven't seen any Helen Slater figures.
Don't forget the bishoujo Supergirl statue that was just released. It looks absolutely fabulous, and I can't wait to get hold of it.
DeleteYeah, I think Anj is on record as not liking that new bishoujo statue (too sexy or sumpin), but I share your love for it.
ReplyDelete"While it's true that Supergirl herself has always been placing herself as straight, the universe itself does anything but agree."
ReplyDeleteUntrue.
"Going back through the history of Kara, she has only been looking for male love interests"
Which would indicate she's straight. There's no two ways about it.
"But what has the universe also provided her with? Superman's supercomputer said her perfect partner was a crossdressing girl."
Superman's computers are infamously unreliable. One of them chose Luma Lynai as Supergirl's perfect doppelganger.
Anyway, Supergirl flew back to Earth the second she learnt her match's real gender. And she was shocked and heart-broken. So, no, she isn't interested in women.
"She had a relationship with a horse, not once but twice, and that horse was once coincidentally also a hermaphrodite."
You're mixing different continuities and incarnations as well as misremembering. First of all, if my memory serves me right, Kara wasn't aware of Biron's true nature when he romanced her in his HUMAN shape. Secondly, Kara hadn't a second relationship with him, and Biron wasn't a hermaphrodite. You're thinking about Post-Crisis Comet, who had a relationship with Earth Angel Linda Danvers. So, nothing to do with Kara.
"Harley also insinuated once that rumors in her circles were that Kara and Batgirl were romantically involved."
Once again, you're mixing different continuities. Whatever happens in the DC Animated Universe tie-in comics has no bearing on mainstream continuity and their characters, right like Big Barda and Dr. Light are a couple in the Bombshell universe but not in the mainstream one. Regardless, there were nothing in that scene to suggest that Harley wasn't merely pulling Barbara's leg.
There were no hints that Kara and Babs were dating in the DCAU. And ultimately Kara moved to the 31st century to stay with Brainiac 5 and Barbara had a brief relationship with Bruce.
"So while Kara is actively ever seeking male companionship, she has been happy in her relationships with other things."
Kara has never been in a happy relationship with other "things". She's exclusively dated men and looked for male human partners. Her behavior proves she isn't interested in female partners. Neither of your "examples" prove she's anything other than straight. Either there was never a relationship or Kara broke it off when she learnt about her "suitor's" true identity.
I'm a Kara/Barbara shipper myself, but... Come on.
"Well, it does kind of go hand-in-hand with the enduring reality that superhero aspirations are always perceived differently when said hero is female. Gender politics continues to be desired as personal discretion for some, while others are using gender preference either as a badge of honor or a bludgeoning instrument these days. Huh? This has nothing to do with gender politics or preferences and everything to do with crazy shippers. Every fandom is infested with them.
