Two Supergirl show posts in a row? I know! But this was too big not to post and talk about right away.
The CW has released an image of what Reign's costume will look like during this season. And I love it!
There is a lot to like about this but I think I want to break things down a little bit. Because I think there are aspects that just work for me.
Overall the black outfit reminds me of Dark Supergirl as well as Satan Girl. But specifically, the black outfit with the S-shield shape and the wrist gauntlets truly remind me of the Dark Supergirl look from the pre-New 52 incarnation.
Moving from the top down, the mask is interesting in how intricate it is. There are lots of points and holes and piping. I also like how her hair ends in a spike. It reminds me of a scorpion stinger. I wonder if she'll use it as a weapon.
But that mask, as much as it pains me, reminds me of the intricate look of the headwear of the Kryptonian Council on Man of Steel. I will say that the look of Supergirl's Krypton is more Snyder than Donner or even comics so I suppose that makes sense.
The S-Shield looks like something from a horror movie. There is no denying that the top looks like a skull. There is some feel of it being formed from smoke which is rising to form the image. There is a sort of C'thulhu feel to.
That is slick. I'd buy the t-shirt!
And then the torso cut outs evoke the feeling of ribs which give her a monstrous, sort of skeletal vibe.
Put all those elements together and you have a near perfect arch-villain outfit.
I can't wait!!
Definitely an improvement on the original Reign's suit.
ReplyDeleteI didn't make the connection with Dark Supergirl's costume and Satan Girl's mask, but you're right. The screenwriters aren't trying to ape both villains' design? Or the costume designer decided that bad guys wear black and spiky accesories?
"I will say that the look of Supergirl's Krypton is more Snyder than Donner or even comics so I suppose that makes sense."
Donner's Krypton wasn't an utopia either. Cold, monotonous-looking and unfeeling, it was a prelude to Byrne's Krypton and most of Post-Crisis Krypton's negative depictions.
The symbol is strange. A kind of cross between a skull and a snake.
To sum up, a very awesome outfit. The costume designer must be praised.
I found the scull interesting - I'm not saying it is - but it reminded me of a Brainiac scull with tendrils when I first saw it.
ReplyDeleteYeah very silver age "Satan Girl" indeed with a vague "Black Scorpion" design vibe as well. Ah the silver age Satan Girl the very extrusion of Supergirl's complicated Id, so far as I know no one ever found it significant that Dark Kara's first move in a survival situation was to callously throw the female Legionaires under the bus...if our host hasn't reviewed that Legion story (reprinted in Adventure Comics #409) then he might wanna take a lookie at it...

Hey Anj, thanks for posting this up. Interesting point about pre-New 52 Dark Supergirl... my immediate thought was
ReplyDeleteMan Of Steel's Zod / Faora costuming myself, but I can see your point of view. I'm wondering about the chest shield
insignia... is it supposed to follow the "House of..." as with the Supers costume? Or is it something else?
As for the remainder of the package -- watching Samantha's transition to Reign, her (ultimate) purpose, whether she's
Kryptonian as well, or a Kryptonian (genetics) experiment -- I'm recalling that earlier scene of her attempting to bend
a crowbar without success.
Regards
Very nice look at an intriguing outfit! Good catch with Satan Girl.
ReplyDeleteThanks for comments! I love this look.
ReplyDeleteGood call on Brainiac!
Reign looks amazing, much better than the original look, buuuuuut...
ReplyDeleteThis show needs to make an effort to be better than just taking the names from the comics and handing them out to actors and actresses. Mixing it up once in a while for diversity is ok, but even then they can try to make them look more like their comic book counterparts through costume and hair cuts.
The only really perfect casting, costume and everything I can think of through the whole series so far is Roulette. Her character is just spot on.
Thankfully Supergirl is well casted and handled as well, but most characters and villains look truly nothing like their source material. I'm actually getting to the point where I begin to feel fondly about the Red Tornado, because even though it looked completely terrible they got an A for effort.
Reign shouldn't look like sexy mysterious leather club hostess. She should look like a monster. Without context not a single comic book reader would look at that and go "Hey, it's Reign!" They might say Faora or Catwoman or even dark Supergirl, but never ever Reign.
I want to be able to feel like I did when I first saw Roulette more often in this show - To be able to go "Omg! That is Roulette! It's how I always imagined her!"
Okay, I know people are saying that they should have just CGId the whole thing but for one, they don't have the budget and second I think this suit will be used by Kara later on. From the way the season has been setting up Kara's alien side vs human side gives me vibes if Superman's dilemma in bvs and I am pretty sure Kara too will die at the end and this authentic kryptonian black suit (which Reign will get from the ship shown at the end of episode 4) will help Kara in her resurrection. Also, I think that the ship which us underwater could double back later as Kara's sanctuary like it was in new 52.
ReplyDeleteThis whole thing is a long shot but I really think it could happen.

ReplyDeleteActually, the show doesn't 'need' to do anything of that sort, since the majority of its viewers don't give a rat's ass about what the comics had in them. Otherwise, they'd be reading them instead of the reality of comics mostly being on life support in favor of other licensed IP deals.
Costuming for real life presentations has to differ away from often outrageous fantasy renderings in order to make the suits palatable and/or comfortable for the actor to want to wear them. Otherwise, it's just useless fan service for a minuscule few....and potential sexual harassment lawsuits (which seem to be all the rage in Hollywood nowadays).
In the case of Reign, the showrunners had stated up front that the costume would be more modest, so the actress wearing it would feel comfortable that she wouldn't accidentally become personally compromised by wearing the outfit. Looks to me like they succeeded handsomely with this design.

Isn't the path they took the sexist one though? They turned one of the few female grusome monster characters into a leatherclad vixen.
ReplyDeleteNo they didn't take a sexist path. If you would see the comic book conception of the character then you would understand that this costume feels right. Her whole body is covered and has armour too. As for her being presented as sexy: you do realize this is a tvshow right and they have to sell the characters (male or female) to the casual audience and thus, they have to look physically appealing.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, she also has to have a sleek and athletic form since she will be physically fighting Supergirl. So if you are thinking of villains like The Thinker from flash, they you need to think better.
I just wish she looked more alien like Reign does in the comics hope the other Worldkillers appearances remain faithful hopefully Deimax does
