Supergirl On Jeopardy In The Form Of A Question
I am occasionally still flabberghasted at how much Supergirl has wormed her way into public consciousness. Remember, I have been a fan of Kara's for a long time and have witnessed her struggles in comics. No need to pick those scabs.
I'll say that since the inception of the television show, it feels as if Supergirl is somehow a known commodity. Non-comic people know she exists (something not always true). She is on merchandise which is available in mainstream stores. She is everywhere.
And that thrills me.
But I have to say there is something about Supergirl suddenly being an answer on Jeopardy that makes me think that she is part of American consciousness right now.
Over the last year I have seen Supergirl mentioned three times on Jeopardy. How cool is that!
On to the questions!
Here was the first one I noticed, months ago, in the category 'Bodies of Water'.
This has to be a deep cut for non-fans. It is one thing to know Supergirl. It is another to know her Kryptonian name is Kara.
So cool.
I don't remember the category but a couple of months after the Kara question, this question popped up.
Melissa Benoist needs to be a household name. She is just incredible. And I love that she is keeping busy with interesting roles outside of Supergirl when filming on the show ends. I would hate to see her pigeon-holed as simply a television superhero actor.
And then just last week there was a category called 'Superhero supporting casts'. We have inherited the Earth if there is enough shows on that Jeopardy could fill a category up with answers!
The easiest clue was J'onn J'onzz and James Olsen. (Not Jimmy!!!)
Since this was the $200 clue, can I infer that the judges assumed everyone would be able to figure it out? Or is it a comment on the popularity of the show?
Anyways, these all made me smile and show just how big Supergirl is right now. I continue to be amazed!
That Kara picture is just adorable. Of course she would press the button before Wonder Woman and Catwoman. Faster than a speeding bullet, an Amazon and a grumpy catperson. Heh.
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome that Supergirl is being mentioned on so many places. Every time I get frustrated because I think she isn't getting the recognition she deserves, I remind myself of S*p*rg*rl. I remind myself of the past, when she was mishandled and then killed by DC, when fans didn't know about her or mocked her.
Yes, her current book could sell better, and she could make regular appearances on the Superman's books, and she could be a Legionnaire or a Justice Leaguer again, and her show could be better-received. However she is in TV, cartoons and games, her friendship with Batgirl has been restored, she HAS been a Leaguer twice, DC keeps selling Supergirl merchandising, and the mainstream public seems aware of her existence. And even though Superman's story has been rewritten still again, she has not been written out of it.
So even if I still feel like she is often ignored by DC, comic writers and fans, she is in a better position than she used to.
This just falls into the old "You know you've made it..." Being a clue on Jeopardy three times is a big start. And you know what else comes next?
ReplyDeleteBeing a puzzle on Jeopardy's sister show Wheel of Fortune.
"Melissa Benoist needs to be a household name. She is just incredible."
Well she has appeared on the chat show circuit appearing twice on Live with Kelly (and her rotating co-host), The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (she should go back on there and play Pup Quiz because of her love of puppies...and being with those golden retirevers will make her lose it) Colbert, James Corden, Seth Myers and Ellen DeGeneres. And during her Glee days she appearead with Craig Ferguson on his chat show.

Problem with H'wood is typecasting fuels things and overexposure is the ultimate burnout. To the 2nd point, she played the widow of one of the Boston bombers in Patriots Day. Now she is in NM filming "Waco" about the 1993 US attack on the Branch Davidian Cult complex in Waco, TX, as she plays David Koresh's wife. That will be soon seen on The Paramount Network, presently SpikeTV. Which leads me to one other place where Melissa can get some exposure, and act silly as well. One of Spike's hottest show is Lip Sync Battle where two celebs lip sync to songs, yes even singers or those who act and sing.
At last year's Chicago Comic and Entertainment Convention, Melissa and Chyler Leigh were asked about LSB with Chyler saying that would be "so much fun." The two of them are like sisters off set and are silly on set pre-filming and they like to have fun. So come on Paramount Network...MAKE IT HAPPEN.

ReplyDeleteWell, I'm sure that scheduling them together outside of the TV show can be a bit of an issue. They had to cancel some con appearances last year when Melissa suddenly took that cameo role in Patriots Day....and now Chyler is touring with her hubby Nathan West's band East Of Eli, which seems to be paying off somewhat with online sales of their duets.
However, in regard to Supergirl's increased media presence....well, it helps when one has the 2nd biggest TV series on a broadcast network. The Jeopardy questions are like tasty icing on the cake. :)
