The May solicits for DC Comics came out and there are a few happy surprises for me sprinkled in the month. In particular, I am looking forward to the Supergirl main title. With Cyborg Superman behind us, it looks like writer Steve Orlando and artist Brian Ching are going to dive into the deep end of the DC Universe And that makes me happy.
Here is a link to all the solicits:

And here are my thoughts!
SUPERGIRL #9
Written by STEVE ORLANDO • Art and cover by BRIAN CHING • Variant cover by BENGAL
“Escape from the Phantom Zone” part one! Trapped in the Phantom Zone, Supergirl and Batgirl must face the Phantom King to escape! But what deadly team is Emerald Empress building? And what does it have to do with the future of the Girl of Steel?
As I said, this arc looks like it is going to be great fun. Supergirl and Batgirl teaming up! That alone is worth it. Throw in the Emerald Empress and this Legion fan is smiling. Add the Phantom King, a nice link to Kara's Krypton past, and I am thrilled.
Hooray for us!

DC COMICS: BOMBSHELLS #26
Written by MARGUERITE BENNETT • Art by CARMEN CARNERO, RICHARD ORTIZ, RACHAEL STOTT and MIRKA ANDOLFO • Cover by ANT LUCIA
We take a moment to see what each Bombshell is up to…before they all collide! Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy leave Atlantis in hopes of using Ivy’s powers to help the famine in Russia. Also heading to Russia are Supergirl and Steve Trevor, who run into trouble when they bump into Lex Luthor!
DC COMICS: BOMBSHELLS #27
Written by MARGUERITE BENNETT • Art by MIRKA ANDOLFO, LAURA BRAGA and CARMEN CARNERO • Cover by ANT LUCIA
The journey to Russia continues as Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy find a magical stowaway: Raven! Then, Supergirl and Steve Trevor’s train to Russia is halted when Supergirl’s reaction to Kryptonite knocks the train off its rails! How can she save her fellow passengers while fighting Russian spies, German spies…and Lex Luthor?!
Bombshells heads back to the top of the solicits post! Supergirl is prominently mentioned in both issues! I am very intrigued in teaming up Supergirl and Steve Trevor. And Supergirl battling Lex Luthor as well! That makes me happy. Nice to see Carmen Carnero's name on art. Carnero was fantastic in Adventures of Supergirl.

SUPERWOMAN #10
Written by K. PERKINS • Art by STEPHEN SEGOVIA and ART THIBERT • Cover by KEN LASHLEY • Variant cover by RENATO GUEDES
“Rediscovery” part one! Superwoman is on the hunt for the man responsible for landing Natasha Irons’ father, Crash, in jail—the deadly Skyhook! But Steel is urging caution, and the three heroes are at odds over how much they can trust Crash’s motives. The true history of Steel’s family tree will be revealed as the group is torn apart.
Why is Superwoman this high on the solicit post? Well K. Perkins, of the great Supergirl Crucible run, is writing the book. This is Perkins second issue so I wonder if she is stepping in as permanent writer! That would be a boon! Can a 'Woman meet 'Girl super-story happen??
And Skyhook is a deep cut going back to the earliest Byrne issues. A mystical creature fighting a super-scientist? Nice!
ACTION COMICS #979

“REVENGE” part one! Superman, Lois and Jon return to their lives in Metropolis while Eradicator, Cyborg Superman, Metallo and Mongul unite to destroy the Man of Steel!

“REVENGE” part two! Both Superman and the Revenge Squad must traverse the deadly Black Vault in a race against time to reach General Zod! Amanda Waller’s secret Kryptonian weapon reveals himself to the world, but Cyborg Superman and Eradicator move in to recruit him. Tying directly into the events of this month’s Suicide Squad issues—and no matter who wins in this epic showdown, it spells certain doom for the Last Son of Krypton!
General Zod? I am hoping Jurgens can breathe some life into him because he hasn't excited me in a while. Eradicator being mentioned makes me think he could be the 'Clark'. But Cyborg and Eradicator together. Set the WABAC machine to Reign of the Supermen! Can Kon be far behind?

“BLACK DAWN” part two! The mysterious force behind Superman’s defeat reveals itself. Superboy wonders what is so great about Truth, Justice and the American way. Will Jon turn against his father?
Hmmm. So it seems that the mystery of Deadman's Swamp hasn't been answered. And given it is in it's own story, maybe it isn't tied into Mr. Oz.
I do hope it has some sort of magical or Hellish component. I like the mix of horror and Superman.

SUPER SONS #4
Written by PETER J. TOMASI • Art and cover by JORGE JIMENEZ • Variant cover by DUSTIN NGUYEN
“When I Grow Up” part four! As our young heroes struggle to break free of the deadly Kid Amazo’s control, they discover the truth behind this young villain’s power! But with an army at his command, and his sights set on total domination, the boys will need to put up the fight of their young lives to stop him! Is the key to stopping him not beating him but helping him?
Could Kid Amazo be the boy in the television show as seen in issue #1?
The cover looks like a blast. And are those space suits the boys are wearing?
I'm really pumped for this series.
NEW SUPER-MAN #11
Written by GENE LUEN YANG • Art by BILLY TAN • Cover by PHILIP TAN • Variant cover by BERNARD CHANG
“THE ZERO ULTIMATUM” part one! Dr. Omen’s deadly first experiment, the original New Super-Man of China, frees himself! Kenan Kong may be learning to control his super abilities, but to survive an encounter with Super-Man Zero he’ll need to learn faster! Plus, the shocking origin of the ultra-powerful All-Yang reveals a surprising connection to Kenan’s teacher—Master I-Ching!
Surprised we are waiting 3 more months to get to the Super-Man Zero fight give he was seen just this month.
This should be a huge brawl given the fight we saw this Zero give Superman and Wonder Woman. How the heck can Kenan hold his own??

DC SUPER HERO GIRLS VOL. 3: SUMMER OLYMPUS TP
Written by SHEA FONTANA • Art and cover by YANCEY LABAT
School’s out for summer, which means Wonder Woman is preparing for her annual trip to visit her father, Zeus—and this year, he says she can bring along a few friends, including Bumblebee, Batgirl, Beast Boy and Katana! When they arrive at Olympus, it’s not long before distrustful Ares turns this family reunion into a family competition—and the prize is Wonder Woman’s soul! But when Ares and Strife join forces to work their battle magic on Wonder Woman’s friends, will the girls end up fighting each other instead of the real enemy?
Don't know if I'll be getting this since Supergirl isn't listed as a main player.
Still, DCSHG deserves all the shout outs it can get!

DC ICONS: SUPERGIRL ACTION FIGURE
Supergirl battles for justice in the skies over National City with four sets of hands, a heat-vision head and hover base.
Supergirl – 6.09”
$28.00 US
On Sale SEPTEMBER 2017
And then hurray for us!
I just saw this figure showcased in the NYC Toyfair. I thought it might take some time to see it on sale.
But here it is in all its glory. Extra head, extra hands. Great design. Count me in.
It is a little pricey for an action figure but I'll be saving my pennies and you should too!
Did I miss anything?

My main gripe with the solicits is I thought Supergirl #8 was going to be the beginning of a long story involving Superman and Supergirl. But from what I'm reading, it sounds like they only meet during that issue, and Supergirl keeps absent from her cousin's books. I wish she makes regular appearances in Action Comics and Superman again. I want her to hang out with Clark and be a part of his family again. A character cannot thrive when she is so isolated.
ReplyDeleteSigh.
At least Supergirl and Batgirl team up. And that thing with the Emerald Empress and the Fatal Five hopefully means the Legion isn't far behind.
Power Girl finally shows up in the Bombshells universe! And her origin is a throwback to Justice League Unlimited Galatea.
"Can a 'Woman meet 'Girl super-story happen??"
Supergirl and Lana would finally meet in the New 52 universe! (Okay, I know they met during the Final Days of Superman but I doubt they talked to each other)
Crucible was so good... and so short. Sigh. I wonder if DC ever explained why they cancelled the book.
Anyway, that cover gives off a certain Iron-Man vibe, IMO.
Mongul allying himself with Cyborg Superman, Metallo and the Eradicator sounds weird. Anyway, I hope we have put Cyborg Zor-El behind us for good this time.
If Kon turns up, he needs to be fixed. Badly. I wish Kon and Linda showed up again, even if they don't become Superboy and Supergirl again. I think the Super-family should be as big as the Bat-family.
Black Dawn sounds interesting. I reckon Tomasi needs to solve that subplot now, before the Kents leave Hamilton for good. We're about to find out what is happening in that Cthulhu-forsaken county!
That action figure looks real great.
So much going on! I can't actually tell which Superwoman that is, though I lean towards a non-electric Lana..
ReplyDeleteI've never had an action figure, are extra hands a thing?
Sorry for poor formatting. I can't seem to fix this post.
ReplyDeleteI think extra hands/heads are relatively new, letting folks put a personal spin on things and letting the price get jacked up.
My guess is it is still Lana. With Superman being streamlined, I can't imagine we'll have 2 Loises for long.
I do want a Superwoman/Supergirl team-up badly!
I've had extra hands with action figures before, but an extra SG head for a figure set seems new to me. Going to have to part with some shekels for that one.
ReplyDeleteSUPERGIRL #9 solicit looks exciting both inside and out; looking forward to the team-up and Phantom Zone madness.

Off-topic, but according to this article, Kara has appeared in more Superman comics than even Lex. She is only beaten by characters that debuted in the forties.

And Wolfman and Giordano told thirty years ago she added nothing to the mythos and was expendable. Riiiight.
Thanks for sharing Anj. And agree with 1st Anon some Supercousin interaction is LONG overdue.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, can't 2nd this comment enough!

ReplyDeleteWell, times have changed. Thankfully.

The Phantom Zone is an acceptable venue for "The World's Finest Women" I'd buy it if they were going undercover selling soft serve ice cream....
ReplyDeleteAh just luv the Batgirl-Supergirl team....take em' any way I can get em'.
As for Supergirl's ubiquity in the old universe I wish I had saved a very thorough post to ye olde Usenet that methodically listed all the times Kara Zor El had saved Kal El's life or safeguarded his secret identity....it was a big sobering number to be sure. Kal El by comparison had returned the favor but infrequently.

What was that old saying, "Behind every powerful man there is an even more powerful woman?" I'd
love to have seen that list as well JF. Would be interesting indeed to read.
