Supergirl and Flash To Crossover!!

When the Supergirl show was first announced and Greg Berlanti was named as the producer, one of the first questions asked was if the show would crossover with the Flash. After all, Berlanti produces that show as well. It was revealed that it was in the contracts that such a crossover could happen. The question seemed less about if it would happen and more of a 'when will it happen'.

Well now we know. Yesterday afternoon, CBS announced that the Flash will appear on the March 28th episode of Supergirl. Here is a link and a blurb:
http://www.cbspressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/releases/view?id=44531

The Flash is speeding to National City! THE FLASH star Grant Gustin, in his role of Barry Allen/The Flash, will cross over to SUPERGIRL in an episode to be broadcast Monday, March 28 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Details of the episode will be announced at a later date.
“We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making SUPERGIRL – THE FLASH and SUPERGIRL are teaming up!” said THE FLASH and SUPERGIRL Executive Producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg.  “We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally, thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone's enthusiasm and support.”
I don't think words can convey the joy I experienced when I read this.

First off, I think it is great that Berlanti acknowledged the fans as helping to drive this. We're here for you!

These two shows are just so fantastic. They show just how fun and cool and inspiring comic books and superheroes can be. The stars are phenomenal and the episodes well acted. Grant Gustin is perfect for Barry Allen. And Melissa Benoist is just perfect as Kara.  And now I get to see them team-up.Putting them together won't be additive joy, it will be exponential joy.

Given that both are Glee alums, there better be a karaoke scene. And there better be a race.

Since the above pics from a May issue of Variety I have been wondering when this would happen and assumed it would be next season.

But like everything with this season of Supergirl, it is happening earlier than I anticipated.

And then the title page of the script got leaked.

Worlds Finest is a great name. No apostrophe means we are talking alternate universes, more than one world. But it plays on the classic comic name perfectly.

Someone on line said this was going to be the opposite of Batman V. Superman. I don't think it is coincidence that it is airing the Monday after that movie is released.

I simply can't wait!!

  1. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the two biggest superheroes on television are meeting merely a few days after the Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice premiere. WB-TV might as well demonstrate where the DC universe has been growing and thriving all along.

  2. Yeah I'm excited as well, definitely a little singing and a race most definitely....it'd be kewl if they sort of taunted each other into it...in a nice way.

  3. One word... "WHEEEEEEEEEEE!"

I don't know about a karaoke scene between Melissa B and Grant G, but +9000 for the
"friendly race for charity, complete with humorous trash talk." One question is
whether Supergirl does have a handle on her superspeed yet to race Flash -- it's
one superpower not really shown so far...

Not sure if anyone else from Flash will join Grant G on Supergirl as well... one
wonders what kind of fun one could have mixing up the cast between the two shows :)

I too am wondering about the rush to do this, especially in light of no official
announcement of a 2nd season. On one hand, happy they're doing this, on the other,
TPTB are playing their cards alittle too close to their chests for my tastes.

    Regards

  4. Maybe the 'Rush' is just a matter of enthusiasm. Everything is in place, so why not do it early? I wonder if Kara finds out that in the Flash's universe there is no recorded Supergirl or Superman, prompting a second crossover in which she tries to find the other, presumably surviving, Krypton.

That's because CBS can take their time on the announcement; normally that kind of thing doesn't happen with this network until May or June anyway. However, the powers that be probably wouldn't be doing this event if both superhero shows weren't already successful in their own right. Despite some sniping cynicism from some uninformed internet corners this week, small blips on the Live ratings stats really don't mean squat to a show that regularly gains millions post-broadcast throughout the week via DVR, PPV and streaming services such as Roku. Supergirl also regularly trends high on social media every week a new episode airs, which is also very important to CBS as well. In essence, a second season is a mere formality for Supergirl at this point.

  6. I read yesterday that of the four shows Greg Berlanti produces "Supergirl" has the highest ratings....

  7. There should be an apostrophe, no? Just like Kara and Helena's "Worlds' Finest."

In any case, this is awesome news. As I've said before as a child my fave heroes were Kara an Barry and their death was beyond awful for me. This is so awesome I get them together again alive and well and on TV TOGETHER!

I hope they become best friends as I believe they were back in the day.

I hope they don't fight and that this will be a hopeful, bright team-up between superheroes.

  8. There's a Facebook graphic stating that both died during Crisis on Infinite Earths and 30 years later, they both have their own TV series.

Yup, more women and families are tuning into this show than any other comic book inspired series presently out there. That alone makes Supergirl something unique and a ground-breaker. A superhero show whose heroine isn't stuck in the past fighting old misogynistic tropes, and addresses contemporary and topical themes of the day, while keeping things clean, aspirational and optimistic. I love the way the show keeps so many plates spinning in the air all at once...which is the perfect hook for viewers to keep tuning in. It's Berlanti's equivalent of a Shonda Rhimes show, with the benefit of a cape. :)

  10. Berlanti is also producing Mysteries of Laura and Blindspot, both on NBC, and the upcoming Riverdale on the CW.

Some movies too, that might best not be remembered.

There was a crossover, of sorts, in last weeks Laura. When Laura was coming home, her dad was watching Blindspot on TV, and he mentioned this georgeous woman covered completely in tatoos, and every one of them was a clue,

  11. Thanks for all the comments!

Great to hear enthusiasm from all fronts!

I'm going to guess Flash heads to Supergirl's world. But what I'd really love is the two of them on neither of their home planets. Earth-3 anyone??

  12. Prediction time:

There will be a season 2 of Supergirl.

However, since this program is special effects heavy, it has higher costs than the typical 1 hr scripted drama.

The ratings have been drifting downward since the pilot, and may not be sufficient to fund the program as it is.

Next season may find a huge change in Supergirl's life, job, career, that will cause her to move from National City.

    Midvale?

Back to college to get her MA at Stanhope?

The change in venue, will allow a change in production location, and the series will be produced in Vancouver.

  13. "The change in venue, will allow a change in production location, and the series will be produced in Vancouver."

Won't happen. Most of the cast lives around the LA area, and the three huge sound stages the show employs are already on the Warner back lot in Burbank. Upending Supergirl to Vancouver would actually make the show MORE expensive to produce, not lessen any overall costs.

That's a nice shout-out, since they're both NBC scripted shows.

  15. I didn't say the cast would be the same, on the contrary, I would expect major cast changes.

But you are right about the stages already set up for the special effects, wireworks/green screens.

The grimreaper still lists Supergirl as "certain to be renewed." I do think it will be renewed. Hopefully the viewer erosion will cease or reverse.

    TVbythe numbers reports "likely"

TVLine predicts renewal as "as safe bet"

  16. Great news!
If this trend continues I'd love to see Ollie and Felicity show up in a crossover too.

  17. The major plotline revision I am expecting is the complete collapse of her "Kara Danvers" identity too many people and a few villains seem to know Her Big Secret. She might need to start over as "Linda Lee" or something Ah dunno....

    :)
I just hope she doesn't pull a "Tony Stark"....

  18. "I didn't say the cast would be the same, on the contrary, I would expect major cast changes."

It's a pretty tight cast and it's a hit show, so they're not going to mess with the formula. Berlanti doesn't usually let people go unless one gets a better offer elsewhere. He personally asked Calista to come aboard, having worked with her before on Brothers and Sisters. And he's pretty loyal to Broadway thespians and up-and-coming talent, which comprises the core cast. There will likely be additions to the cast as it progresses; but that 'working girl in the big city' feel is the show's sweet spot that is uniquely attracting more women and families to watch than any other superhero show presently airing.

  19. KET, you may well be right.

Once or twice, I have been wrong before.

(ok, a lot more than once or twice)

my predictions are worth just about what you paid for them.

  20. I would love a 'return to Midvale' episode at some point Gary. High school reunion? Family reunion?

We have this comment about Midvale:

    ------------------------------------------

Supergirl: The Midvale Middle School Years

During Cat Grant's interrogation of Kara regarding her past, Kara mentioned that she transferred to Midvale during 8th grade. During Supergirl's early comic book appearances, she lived in the small suburban town of Midvale, located on the outskirts of Metropolis.

  22. garyb,

Good eye on that blog post. However, we may possibly get some more background information about Midvale soon, as Helen Slater is returning to the show as Eliza Danvers this month to film a couple of episodes...and yes, these will also include Laura Vandervoort as Indigo.
