Supergirl Trade And Something Else I Want To Buy

Over on the DC Source Blog, they have been revealing the plans for the trades for not only the 'New 52' but also pre-relaunch titles and other goodies as well. Here is the link: http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2012/01/26/dc-comics-the-new-52-collected-editions-%E2%80%93-an-updated-look-at-2012/

Here is the Supergirl trade info (I am assuming the Supergirl #1 cover will be the trade dress).

Coming in October 2012:

SUPERGIRL VOL. 1: THE LAST DAUGHTER OF KRYPTON TP
Writer: Michael Green and Mike Johnson
Artist: Mahmud Asrar
Collects: SUPERGIRL #1-7
$14.99 US, 160 pg

Now, I question the timing of some of these. The Supergirl trade is due out in October 2012. That's 6 months after the last included issue. Wouldn't it be better to offer these things earlier so people could buy the trade and then maybe jump onto the floppies more easily? Of course, DC couldn't flood the market with the 52 trades all at once.

For me, I hope that DC takes advantage of the relaunch buzz by stuffing these first trades with extras. How about concept art around new costumes? Or interviews with the creators? How about a foreword? Or putting in the initial pitch? I posed the question to the creative team via Twitter.

Mahmud Asrar responded: "Don't know any official details but I definitely hope so. Personally I'd fill it up with extras. :)"

Do the right thing DC!

I will say that DC is doing the right thing with this ...

SHOWCASE PRESENTS: AMETHYST, PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD VOL. 1 TP

Writers: Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohen
Artists: Ernie Colon, Ric Estrada, Pablo Marcos, Alex Saviuk, Bob Smith, Gary Martin, Romeo Tanghal, Kurt Schaffenberger and Karl Kesel
Collects: LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #298, AMETHYST, PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD #1-12, AMETHYST ANNUAL #1, DC COMICS PRESENTS #63 and AMETHYST #1-11
$19.99 US, 648 pg

In September 2012, DC is putting out a 'phone book' style Showcase collection of Amethyst, Princess of the Gemworld! Count me in!

I would have preferred more traditional trades, color reprints of the initial miniseries, etc. But at least I have something!

Hooray to DC for doing the right thing!

  1. I don't understand it, the Superman trade paperback is coming out soon, yet the Supergirl trade paperback won't be out until the fall! What, we Supergirl fans don't rate with DC?

  2. Amethyst? I'm shaking my head with this. I think the Estaban Moroto series is the only notable thing worth revisiting with this character, but then I love his work. Don't get me wrong, I think Amythyst is long overdue for a revamp and return to the DCU (JLA Dark!) but reprinting her original series makes no sense, this is a very obscure and relatively unloved character...

  3. I'm not so sure about the "relatively unloved" bit. It was my impression that many have fond memories of this series -- as do I, so maybe that's skewing my impression.

Great point. Maybe I should have said relatively underappreciated.

    I loved that book.
