The 'new' DCU continues to be discussed all over the internet and, as usual, Bleeding Cool is breaking a lot of the news. One of their stories states that there is now an editorial edict that female characters wear 'practical clothing'. Here is the link: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/01/flashpost-dc-women-to-wear-trousers/
Now there might be a bit of baiting with the headline. The story says 'practical clothing', not 'only trousers'. But one quote from the story mildly irked me.
But the likes of Supergirl will be redesigned so they aren’t running around in a little skirt flashing their panties at every available opportunity either. Female superhero characters will have their legs covered.
I mean, why drag Supergirl into this conversation? Doesn't he know about the great 'Bike Shorts' debate? There hasn't been a Supergirl panty shot (at least in her own comic) in years.
Anyways, the pants headline is sure to rattle some people's cages. And it isn't like Supergirl hasn't worn pants before.
She wore red shorts from much of her career. This is the costume a lot of people think of when they think of Supergirl.
And in the 70s when she sported many costumes, some of them had pants like this one on Adventure Comics #412. There is almost too much happening on this cover to discuss at length.
And she sported pants in the Elseworld's Finest book by Barbara Kesel and Matt Haley.
Of course, we still don't know if there is a Supergirl book, let alone if her costume has been tweaked.
I am sure more news will be coming soon.
I'm not paying attention to anything Bleeding Cool prints on this. They don't cite sources.
ReplyDeleteThe biker shorts were a mistake and need to go away. It's also annoying that Supergirl always gets dragged in, as if she were ever the character who was overdoing the sex appeal thing. Power Girl? Sure. Starfire? Of course. Some of the males? Them too.
ReplyDeleteNo more biker shorts. No pants. Return Supergirl's costume to what it was like for most of her existence.
Pants on Supergirl bugs me to be sure...but in a few months we may not have a Supergirl at all, so we have bigger fish to fry, pants, shorts, panties, miniskirts or cullotes notwithstanding.

All too true John.
ReplyDeleteThe longer we go without hearing of the next rendition of the Supergirl book, the more worried I get.
Hi:
ReplyDeleteMan! I think you need to calm down & take the proverbial deep breath.-
Now exhale...ok?
Now I think you´ll need to go back to my post #7 I think re. your "After-flashpoint" article that explains how it is DC and not us who is (should be) real desperate.-
LOL: Otherwise it is YOU that will not be here by September.-
Relax! The future is Supergirl´s.-
DAVID
(from "Eternalfemininesupergirl2") group-
I'm just going to take a wait and see attitude on all of this until we hearing more about DC's plans mid month.

GENE
I'm with Gene, here. But I don't mind seeing Supergirl wear something like what we saw in Elseworlds- that was a great one-shot!- ealperin
ReplyDeleteWe cite sources when we can (see the current Relaunch-Not-A-Reboot piece). We don't cite sources when we can't. And very aware of the Bike Shorts controversy, I needed a shorthand solution and Supergirl was most definitely that. Also Power Girl.
ReplyDeleteI'm also finding the American Vs English language on this hard which probably doesn't help matters.

ReplyDeleteI am dissapointed with this. Skirts or pants, it´s the same for me. But I can´t shake the feeling that it´s going back to the tight mentality of the very first XX century decades :(

ReplyDeleteIn a society where sex sells I debates like this often confuse me.
ReplyDeleteWhy people still get offended by a comicbook upskirt confuses me. Especially when its been nonsexual upskirst for supergirl. Yet nobody had a problem with powergirl flying around all this time in basically the same thing panties. It covers the same amount of body as panties do. And she didn't even wear a skirt, and then their is wonderwoman... The bikeshorts looked stupid and then pants also look stupid. Putting pants on wonderwoman now looks stupid. I personally think this was the best supergirl costume: http://www.film.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/25746681-25746685-large.jpg
