Supergirl #49 Preview Pages On Matt Camp's Blog

Supergirl #49 is not due ot be released for another two weeks. And this isn't just any issue. This is purportedly the issue in which Lana Lang dies. With such a spoiler-rich theme, DC and the creators have been pretty tight-lipped. Almost no advance hints have been released other than the fact that 'Lana meets her fate'.

So I was happy to get some preview pages over on Matt Camp's blog. Sure, not much is revealed (I think the first 2 pages had been released already) but anything is better than nothing. Here is the link:

Here is the opening page, Lana heading through the lobby of her apartment building. The doorman tipping his cap.

And then Lana begins to shed bloody tears.
The doorman turns to tell Lana that her cab has arrived. Then all we see is his shocked expression.
Is there any doubt that the next page is a splash of Lana collapsed on the ground in a pool of blood? No doubt here.

Camp includes another page ... this one of Supergirl and Inspector Henderson on the roof of the Police Headquarters. Hmmm ... she sure doesn't look Banshee'd out. So she must shrug off that possession pretty quickly.

I continue to think that Camp draws a very clean and vibrant Supergirl. It is hard for me to elucidate what it is about his style that impresses me. Can it be both detailed and economical at the same time? Those middle four panels here are great, especially the close-up of Supergirl's face. Powerful.

Matt Camp also designed the look of the Super-banshee. As an added bonus, here is a 'design piece' of the Super-banshee that I got a chance to peek at. It is my honor to share it with you all.

I can't wait for the issue. And I look forward to seeing more of Camp's art ... maybe in another Supergirl issue when Jamal needs a rest.

  2. "Is there any doubt?"

    Yes! This is comics!

I'm putting my money on the doorman looking down and finding a mutant of some sort that just might become the next villain for Supergirl.

It would create a great conflict. "I don't want to hurt her but "she's" hurting all these people."

In the end SG is forced to incapacitate the mutated Lana. She then races her to the hospital after nearly killing her. Perhaps she mutates back right at the end of the fight.

Henderson: Man, I'm getting tired of supervillains punching holes through my office wall.

Supergirl: Just be glad it wasn't Giganta. People have had to replace entire buildings because of her.

Henderson: At least the department's insurance covers "metahuman damage."

Supergirl: Definitely a necessity in this town.

Henderson: You have your arms crossed, are you cold in that outfit?

Supergirl: Naw, thick Kryptonian skin remember?

Bullets only tickle...Wait, did you hear that!?

    *FLIES OFF*

Henderson: Now I know how Gordon feels...

Actually Diamond official site lists it as being due out as of next week bro. ;)

Question: the scene where Lana is heading through the lobby - do those markings of the floor look kind of Kryptonian like to anybody else? :)

I think he used one of Smallville's season 7 "Supergirl" promo shots where Laura Vandervoort is in this exact pose when doing up his Super-banshee there. ;)

P.S. Anj, Newsarama has recently uploaded their official sneak peeks for all things Superman Family wise come DC's March solicitations which includes a VERY surprising solicitation as well as cover come Supergirl #52 by Francis James Manapul at that! ;)

That's a very good guess, especially given that some folks here think that her illness is linked to the Insect Queen issues of Superman from a few years ago.

    Thanks for the post!
