Taylor Swift As Supergirl?
Well, there has been a lot of buzz on the Internet about Supergirl being resurrected as wither a movie or a television series and one name keeps cropping to the top of potential Kara's ... Taylor Swift.
Here is a link to MTV.com .. although the news is everywhere.
http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/taylor-swift/news/170870-taylor-swift-to-play-supergirl
Taylor Swift is being lined up to play Supergirl in a new film- according to reports.
The star is apparently film bosses fist choice for the big role, despite having only acted in one film so far.
A source told Bang Showbiz: “A number of young stars are being mentioned for the title role in a Supergirl movie and possible TV spinoff, and Taylor is top of that list. She has all the right elements to be a positive role model to young girls.”
So what does everyone think?
First off, who would ever imagine that another Supergirl movie would even be on the table! I am shocked and thrilled.
I don't listen to Swift's music but from what I have seen on a variety of television shows, she looks like she would have a decent mix of strength, adventurousness, and wholesomeness to, on first pass, be an okay Supergirl. I know nothing of her acting skills.
This would also be one of those cross-cultural bonanzas where suddenly Supergirl would be a hot commodity and her comics would sell like ... well, like Taylor Swift albums. Supergirl stuff would be everywhere!
This could all be rumors. I would rather see Vandervoort on the big screen. Swift is no Helen Slater. And the script could be horrible. But I think another Supergirl movie would be pretty cool.
What do you all think?
hmm, well i obviously run in different circles. i've not heard of taylor swift, and this is the first pic i've seen of her. but, you're right, anj, she does seem to have the look for supergirl. i guess we'll see...
ReplyDeletei, too, would enjoy seeing more of vandervoort, but i'm not one to mix small screen with the movies. if there's a supergirl spin-off there's no one i'd rather have play kara, but i do hope they won't go with laura for the big screen. it'd be like the same writer/artist team doing main title supergirl as well as all-star supergirl, if you catch my meaning...
I'll take Laura Vandervoort as Supergirl over Taylor Swift any day. Let Taylor continue do music.
ReplyDeleteThis is a publicity stunt, last week supposedly Miley Cyrus was campaigning to play Batgirl. I doubt both stories we have heard nothing about a script, director, or a producer....And with the SuperMAN on hold, we can bet no action will be entertained re. Kousin Kara.
ReplyDeleteSwift is a pretty girl who will get no closer to Supergirl than a nice costume on Halloween.

Heh, I told y'all WB PTB had some BIG plans for Supergirl be it TV wise or another movie in the works in next few years. ;)
ReplyDeleteIf WB/DC have given up on doing yet another Superman reboot themed franchise flick then I say let him be the major co star featured in an all new Supergirl movie (as was the original intended plan for the '84 version) instead so that way both world wide "Super cousins" fans have a win win situation where Superman is seen back on the big screen and Supergirl finally is reunited with her Kryptonian cousin! :D
Taylor Swift as Supergirl actually sounds quite interesting to me but big question is can she act as well as she sing's though? :/
If WB/DC really want to play it safe they could just sign up Laura Vandervoort who can not only act but has the already built in Supergirl fan base thanks to her time on Smallville. :D
Oh, and I truly hope that when this goes ahead that WB rightfully get Helen Slater to cameo in it as either Alura Zor-El or even Lana Lang. ;)
Christopher Reeve is to Superman as Helen Slater is to Supergirl. This all seems Brandon Routh-ie to me.
ReplyDeleteObviously, Supergirl could make a great movie, but I still find this all rather suspect. I guess you could do worse than Taylor Swift, and I certainly prefer that direction over Super-Daisy-Duke, but it fairly reeks of horse manure.
I'm going to go cry in a corner over the prospect of a second Supergirl movie with no Wonder Woman yet in sight...
I'm going to take this rumor with a grain of salt until (if there will ever be) an official announcement is made by WB.
ReplyDeleteThe ongoing litigation between the Siegel family and DC has put the brakes on any future Superman movies. However, the copyright/trademark of Supergirl is immune from that legal battle, so a Supergirl movie is plausable.
I think Taylor Swift could work, I saw one of her music videos with her wearing thick glasses, so she does have the Linda Lang part down pat.
But lets assume all of this is true. After the euphoria passes, there will be concern among the fans on whether or not the writer/director/producers actually understand what Supergirl is all about.
If this does come to pass, I hope Sterling Gates and Landry Walker are hired as writers or consultants.
I'd just like an epic that takes the character seriously. No 'girly' plots, think of a superman plot and replace him with Supergirl.(with allowance for the character's different approach to the task and personality) What I loved about the first movie is that they never said 'she's just a girl', it never occurred to me she was weaker or less than superman.
ReplyDeleteSwift is a pretty girl who will get no closer to Supergirl than a nice costume on Halloween.
ReplyDeleteWell, I agree that she wouldn't be on even my short list of who should play Supergirl on the big screen.
That said, if they are looking for a teen idol to play the part, Swift probably fits the bill the most.
I don't even want to imagine Kara being play by Cyrus or Ashley Tisdale or Hayden Panitierre.
Christopher Reeve is to Superman as Helen Slater is to Supergirl. This all seems Brandon Routh-ie to me.

My sentiments exactly!

ReplyDeleteAgreed. It will all be about the story.

ReplyDeleteI agree with this too.
Thanks everyone for the posts!
I remember when she was on CSI and they were promoting it heavily. I had no idea who she was or why they were pushing her guest apperance... but after the episode was over I found that I was very impressed with her. She showed some nuance as her charcater had to go from a sunny personality, to someone who got darker, sadder as the years passed.
ReplyDeleteStill, none of that matters if you don't have a decent story and a director with some talent who will do her justice. Swift would be fine in a movie, as long as the charcater receives quality effort like Iron Man and Batman did and isn't put into the hand of a hack like Tim (Fantastic Four) Story.
Oh I don't know, Hayden Panieterre could work. Granted, I may just think that because I have a crush on her..
ReplyDeleteIF not Laura Vandervoort, maybe Adrienne Palicki then. They are the only two that I can see as Kara.
ReplyDeleteoh HELL NO!!! She has a creepy face, but she is a good singer but as supergirl NO!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if she could pull it off to be honest. I love Taylor and her music but I would worry that she just isn't quite Kara. However, I would like to see her prove me wrong. She could fight Lex Luthor's business partner, Kanye West. Awesome.
ReplyDeletegod no...
ReplyDeleteIt was a rumor after all:

SUPERGIRL! THE LOVE STORY?
So there was a silly rumor last week of a Supergirl franchise being built around Taylor Swift, the pretty country music singer(?) accosted by Kayne West at an award show earlier this year. I chose not to run the story because it was a truly silly story that wasn't in connection with "Batman 3" and while we run rumors here at the Comic Reel, this one had a tenuous grasp on reality. Sometimes these really silly ones get traction (see the one about Cher playing Catwoman in "Batman 3"), so Mania.com talked to a source within DC Entertainment for a dismissal of the claim. "Pretty funny though, but no truth whatsoever. I'd love to know who the 'hollywood insider' is because that's as clueless a thing as I've heard all year," says their source. I think this was the work of Mysterio.
