Happy Mother's Day !!!
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mommies out there!
With the ongoing stories and posts about the current Alura (a not so happy Mommy), I thought I would take a look back to the Silver Age when Linda Lee got a new Mom, Edna Danvers.
In Action Comics #279, Linda gets adopted by the Danvers. Supergirl had just lost her powers and as a result was 'allowed to be adopted' by Superman.
Here is where she moves into the Danvers' house with Streaky.
Look at how Edna immediately welcomes Linda into the house by asking Linda to call her 'Mom'. The Danvers soon learned Linda's secret and became an important part in her life.
I have a pancake breakfast to make.
Hope all the Moms have a great day!
A great dramatic opportunity was missed here, initially Linda concealed her superhumanity from her foster parents, soon enough though enough trust was established that she could "come out" as Supergirl to them.
ReplyDeleteLater on it was revealed that the Danvers' only son had been killed on active duty with the US Army so they'd consciously adopted Linda Lee to fill that emotional void...Something they had withheld at the time of her formal adoption.
So both parent and child concealed critical information...interesting.
Pity the Danvers' can't be included in the current mythos, i've always felt they deserved a second chance, certainly some dramatic potential is there.
Anyhow
Happy Mother's Day and a hug for Alura, it won't do her any good but the niceties must be observed.

ReplyDeleteHaw! There are so many different ways that sentence could end, and none of them are good.
My fave scenario: "...we've already donated it to 'Locks of Love.' So hop on this stool and I'll get choppin'!" That's the great thing about the Danvers. They used every part of the orphan.

ReplyDeleteMan the Danvers were so warm and loving towards Kara/Linda that upon the Post-COIE Peter David's run of Supergirl come 'Many Happy Returns' I teared up upon seeing her being reunited with them (only Edna was now known as Sylvia) as now being given a "sister" who Kara could relate to who'll unknown to her will be apparently her inspiration upon choosing her civilian secret identity name itself even! :D
Anywho, a sincere Happy Mothers day to all Moms everywhere! :D

I grew to really like the Danvers and their relationship with Supergirl over the years. They were always very supportive of her even into the Daring New Adventure run.

Thanks for the post.
It was this comment (which ended with him saying her braids were too young a look for her) that led to her new hair style - the campus cuddle bun - which was the favorite style in a reader poll back then.
