Newsarama Salutes Supergirl

Newsarama has started a series of articles looking forward to 2009. The first part was '9 characters to watch in 2009' and Supergirl was there (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/120829-9-Characters.html ).

Supergirl (DC Comics)
Although she is the female counterpart to DC's signature superhero, she's never quite lived up to her birthright until now. Her ongoing series has finally (finally!) gotten its footing with writer Sterling Gates, and Supergirl is emerging as a key part of the larger DC Universe not as Superman's proverbial “kid sister” but as her own person. Far from a Superman in women's clothing, Supergirl has begun to emerge and reach her full potential – and her fans couldn't be happier.

The next part was '9 creators to watch in 2009' and Sterling Gates was there ( http://www.newsarama.com/comics/120830-9-Creators.html ).

Sterling Gates
Like Bendis' endorsement for Jonathan Hickman, Sterling Gates can credit Geoff Johns for propelling him to the big leagues of superhero comics. From debuting at DC in December 2007, now he's writing a re-invigorates Supergirl series and is considered a right-hand man for DC comics architect Geoff Johns. Two months shy of his 28th birthday, his stellar work on Supergirl is looking to be a launching pad for a formidable comics career.

Here is hoping that Jamal Igle gets a nod in the inevitable '9 artists to watch' piece.

As has been said elsewhere, it just feels good to be a Supergirl fan right now. Everything seems to be on the rise.

Mmm, with all due respect Anj, I'd have to disgaree on that last bit. I mean we've recently uncovered that Alura is one heck of a evil piece of work on par of Ursa-Zod as well as at the same time having to endure loosing a DECENT Post-COIE/IC DCU continuity proper incarnation of Zor-El to Reactron! Now I don't know about you but these 2 factors have truly gutted THIS particular Supergirl fan in the end and i'm VERY worried what else is in store for Supergirl as such in 09. :/

  2. P.S. Anj, how come you didn't mention Kara Zor-L/"Karen Starr", A.K.A. Power Girl Supergirl's actual womanly more bustier aged E-2 Kryptonian twin counterpart was also on that list eh?

Please tell me you'll be willing to review Power Girl's own ongoing in 09! After all she IS a womanly aged E-2 Kryptonian Supergirl at the end of the day. :)

I have debated it back and forth (both buying the title and reviewing it) for a bit in my mind.

I am still on the fence.

If I buy any issues I will at least do a quick review here.

  4. personally I don't think Power Girl is Supergirl. As far as I know the only time she's gone by that name was in Superman/Batman when the 'supergirls' in and out of continuity were collected to save clark. That title is also said to be 'on the edge of continuity'. In comes down to whether you believe every Kara must be a Supergirl. Also look at it this way. Earth One Supergirl was once 'mighty maid' does this make both Power Girl and Supergirl of New Earth Mighty Maid. No. I think Power Girl is a variation on the Supergirl concept as much as Andromeda was and in the end both became post crisis continuity plugs but neither were ever 'supergirl'

    Thanks for the post.

My gut tells me that Power Girl reviews don't belong on a Supergirl blog.

But I review Reign in Hell and will probably continue to review the Superman titles. So we'll see.

  6. Nikki, then with all due respect why refer to Power Girl's Kryptonian birth name as being "Kara Zor-L" if she's not intended to be the E-2 Kara Zor-El Supergirl at all? :/

Anj, I kindly urge you to think it all her title as being yet that of another Supergirl themed title that us Supergirl fans all over can look forward to along with your reviews. ;)

That's what I had meant to have said above. Heh.
