Supergirl #37 cover - who is Superwoman?

Joshua Middleton has posted his cover for January's Supergirl #37 on his website. Here is the link: http://joshuamiddleton.blogspot.com/2008/10/supergirl-37.html. This issue is another part of the New Krypton story arc.

As usual, the artwork is dynamite. I especially like the friction effect on her legs making look like she is re-entering an atmosphere.

It sounds as though this Superwoman is not Kristin Wells, Jimmy Olsen's descendant in the 30th century. The powers that be are being fairly tight lipped about her identity, although she figures to be an inhabitant of Kandor and wears the El shield.

My immediate guess is that she is an update of Lesla Lar. As a silver age character, she resembled Supergirl so much she was her double. Maybe here, Zor-El and Alura took her in as a surrogate daughter, making her an adopted El. Maybe she holds a grudge against Kara.

Any other thoughts as to 'who is Superwoman?'

  1. a kryptonian going by the name of kristin wells popped up just a little while ago in kurt busiek's 'the third kryptonian' storyline. i don't know that she would come back to earth, but she could be a possibility, as she does have earth culture experience...

  2. Y'mean Karsta Wor-Ul, AKA "Kristin Wells"? Yeah, I had originally thought of that too heath edwards. Alas, Mr. Gates and Igle are both stating that she's supposedly NOT who we think she'd be under the mask though. (So I some how doubt it'll turn out to be the most obvious choice. :/)

Hmmmm, if not Karsta Wor-Ul who else could she possibly be then? Alura-El (Kara's biological birth mother)? Maybe she's who anj theorizes, Lesla Lar? (Maybe Zor-El and Alura took her in as a surrogate daughter, making her an adopted El. Maybe she holds a grudge against Kara.) Now THAT would be awesome in my opinion! or (and dare I say it) Lara-El (Kal's Kryptonian birth mother) here instead? (Could you even begin to imagine how that revelation would go down with Superman fans! YIKES!)

Aside from them who else could she possibly be? Either Lana Lang or Lois Lane given Kryptonian like Superpowers? PAD's Linda Danvers? Heck, she could even be Cat Grant with Superpowers for all we know. (I mean, it would be just like her wanting to try to up stage Supergirl these days so what better way then to become Superwoman?)

P.S.: Anj, that is indeed one really stunning shot of our mysterious Superwoman possibly re entering Earth's stratosphere there! :D

  3. hmm, isn't that style reserved for the 'faces of evil'? Superwoman is supergirl's nemesis? How peter pan!

  4. yeah, apparently the january covers are part of the 'faces of evil' month. superwoman may be a baddie... she does seem to have a different colour scheme, with the white and lack of yellow...

  5. Alura works for me, imagine the possibilities with Kara's MOM suddenly cramping the Girl of Steel's style...enforcing curfew...getting on her case about her hemline...guilt tripping her about her lack of wholesome Kryptonian values.
    I mean think about it.

Hmmmm, you two might just be right about that too! YIKES! Now THAT would be quite the change of pace but a real disappointment at least for me. (Hang on, we already have an evil supervillainess going by Superwoman, that being the anti-matter Earth's own Crime Sydnicate member. :/)

LMAO! I recon ah! Heh. I could see it now:

    Supergirl: "Awright, where's Lana? Speak!!!"

Superwoman/Alura: "KARA ZOR-EL! Young lady didn't i tell you no crime fighting past 10 pm!"

Supergirl: *Slaps forehead* "Awww, MOM! Not now!"

Superwoman: "Don't you Mom me missy! You get right back to New Krypton! And keep that "snapsnorch" (Kryptonian swearing slang) Terran fee line out of my clothes basket while you're at it too! Now go!"

    lol! :P

It's great to hear from you!

I did not get the Third Kryptonian storyline; that was before I re-started the Superman titles.

    Is it worth it?

So a Kristin Wells appears in that. Hmmmm ...

I love Linda Danvers so she is an interesting thought.

Still, I love her character so much I would hate to see her mishandled (like she has been so far in Reign in Hell) nor do I want to see her become a villain.

The black cover is a 'faces of evil' concept making Superwoman a villain.

Hmmm ... maybe a Kara Zor-El from a variant future? One of the ones where she ends up a despot?

Hee hee ... it is a funny concept.

Talos does a good job of writing some dialogue if that idea.

I doubt it is Alura. But we'll see.

Dude I know exactly how you feel ah. Apparently though DiDio not to recently confirmed that we can expect to be seeing even more of Linda in RIH as of yet.

Why not. Heck, how many times have they tried to do just this to Superman through out the years (Armageadon 2001: Superman annuals anyone?) so why not our Kara come 21st Century wise now too then. :/

    Why thank ya! :D

Well, i honestly hope it is in the end more then anyone really if not Karsta Wor-Ul/"Kristin Wells" this is. :/

P.S.: anj, I didn't answer the first post because you asked someone in particular about how "The Third Kryptonian" arc was for them overall and thus didn't want to step on anyones toes. :)

the story does set up a lot of the kryptonian stuff that's coming up now, so in that sense its good stuff to know, but (personal opinion) i don't care too much for the kryptonian empire that will now be in the current continuity...

worth a read, if not a buy. depends on how tight a grasp you like to keep your collection...

mo worries. always nice to have more than one opinion...

  14. I would love to see Lesla-Lar return to continuity ... she had a lot of potential as a Lex Luthor-esque counterpart to Kara with super-powers to boot!

    I hope it is her.

It'll be interesting to see how long they keep it a mystery.

  16. It could be Lesla-Lar.. but...

Sterling said that "She'll be a friend to the House Of El"

    So that doesn't make sense...

I'm thinking that it could be Linda Danvers.

    Thanks for the post.

A friend of the House of El ... but on a villain cover.

    It certainly deepens the mystery.

I am afraid it will be Linda, what with being a villain cover and all.

  18. I do like the idea of Zor El and Alura moving on after Kara left them in some really dramatic way...but what that would be I couldn't say. Frankly bringing them back into continuity is a nice nostalgia beat but also fraught with "too much of a good thing".

wouldn't it be fun if out of costume the character was a friend, but supergirl didn't know that her friend was actually a costumed-villain... i think i remember hearing about a friend of kara's who turned against her at one point. that could be fun...

  20. that would be sorta scary if it were true.. but then again Holloween IS coming up... sooo.... that could be a posibility.
