Everyone seems to love the Supergirl cover of Final Crisis 3. Even the artist JG Jones has said that he is highly pleased with it.
But what message is it trying to convey? What emotion is she showing her?
On the blogs and boards people seem to have lots of ideas.
I thought it showed an innocence of Kara in the face of pure evil.
This blog's frequenters Heath Edwards and John Feer have thought it showed fear of some threat approaching or deep thought about a problem she is trying to work out, respectively. On review of the cover, both are very valid interpretations. I have even read on some boards that people thought this was a 'come hither' vampish pose (although I don't see that at all).
So I figured if it was open to such interpretation that a poll was in order.
So what emotion do you think Kara is showing on the cover? And if it falls in the category of 'other', please post what you think. I am intrigued by this. The poll is at the top of the column on the right.
Thanks!
Hi! I recently found your blog- it is really great to find a source of Supergirl commentary and news!
ReplyDeleteI voted "other" on your poll. I think Kara's expression is one of wonder- she has a look of awe to her. Kelley Puckett gave Kara this great sense of curiosity, and I think this cover goes well with that characterization.

I put "pensive," though I do feel there is a mixture of awe & wonder in her expression mixed with the sense that something huge is happening and she has to do something about it.
ReplyDeleteHmmm ... maybe "other" would have been better.

Thanks so much for the post! I am glad you are enjoying the blog!
She does have a look of awe in the cover. Yet another good thought.
Hmmm, maybe I'll have to track down JG Jones and see what he intended.

There is a sense of urgency on her face which works well with wonder or fear of an approaching threat or pensive.
Thanks for the post and vote!
eheh... i have betrayed my previsou stance, and gone with pensive. it sums up a bit better what supergirl is feeling, i think. yay, 'pensive'.

ReplyDeleteInteresting. And I was thinking of changing my vote to awe/wonder.
Obviously a great cover.
If I had get specific...either she is seeing something unprecedented happen with Kousin Kal or else just possibly whatever she is seeing evokes Krypton's destruction in her mind.
ReplyDeleteRemember Kara recalls Krypton's end as a rational adolescent so it's effects on her mimic "post traumatic stress" or such would be the case if the writing was done right.
Just some thoughts

This cover is the reason, after vowing to myself to not buy multiple covers of issues/series, that I decided to buy both covers for all of Final Crisis.
ReplyDeleteI voted that she looked innocent, personally. She looks, to me, like a young girl in over her head.
It's such an absolutely beautiful rendering by JG that if they came out with a poster, I would easily frame it and hang it up above my desk. It's simply gorgeous.
My *one* minor quibble is with the cape, in that it looks kind of shiny, and also I've always been a big fan of the super-huge cape, like Churchill drew it.
But no, I have NO idea where people are getting this whole "sexual" vibe of this. It seems almost the exact opposite to me. In fact, it reminds me of some religious art.

ReplyDeleteI agree. The more I look at it, the more I think she has just watched some hero get crushed and she knows she needs to head into the fray despite being outmatched.

I know! It is about as anti-sexy as you can get. I just don't see it at all when people have said this.

ReplyDeleteAs always, people bring their own issues to something like this. Really, I would love to see some who feel this way analyze fine art.
But yeah, this is about as a-sexual as it can get.
