This is truly the summer of Supergirl as new stories are suddenly appearing out of the ether, some of them utterly surprising.
Take for example a digital-only Supergirl/Blade crossover on the DC Universe Infinite app. In a world where Batman has teamed up with Deadpool, Superman has teamed up with Spider-Man, and Carnage killed Jimmy Olsen, why not have Supergirl and Blade team up.
CRC Payne, who wrote the main story in the Supergirl Girl Next Door issue, writes a fun quick read of Blade and Supergirl fighting Mojo and 'the algorithm' feeding the villain bad ideas.
And this issue answers a question I have been asking myself since 2011 and the New 52 Justice League Dark book. What would a Supergirl story drawn by Mikel Janin look like? Turns out it looks great.
This is a free issue, read vertically, digital-only, mashing the DC and Marvel universe. I have a big question about the ending but I think I am going to not worry about it too much. Let's just enjoy the ride.
The other side is a 'stoic make struggling with darkness'.
Mojo is relying on the algorithm to create his latest hit.
It spits out 'romance' but with the impossible main character of a 'strong female who is perpetually a damsel in distress'.
I don't know about yours but my algorithm lies all the time.
Just like that, poof, a Kryptonite-weakened Supergirl finds herself in the middle of some woods.
Love Janin's take on the character.
I laughed out loud when Mojo admits that could be anyone.
So many grim, clenched-jaw heroes these days.
I love how throughout the story Supergirl questions Blade killing the undead. She isn't keen to it.
I love how Mojo yells at them for breaking a fourth wall. They aren't Deadpool! That is another laugh out loud moment!
Then we hear the slop Mojo is churning out. Seasons of a vampire romance. Sexy werewolves as love rivals. Sounds like Twilight!
I find the whole thing both ridiculous and real.
Blade has an idea ... but it means playing along with Mojo's terrible story.
I don't know if I am keen to the whole vertical read. The panels are so narrow Janin can't really breathe.
I don't know about this bit about vampire bites curing things. New on me ... but let's move along.
My favorite panel of the book. Love that Kara.
Kara lays down the law. Send her and Blade home or she continues to destroy. Fun seeing her let loose like this.
Nothing left but the 'friendly farewell'. Great closing shot of Kara floating and flexing and Blade crouched on a rooftop.
The whole thing is insane. Blade and Supergirl fight Mojo! I guess now I have seen everything.
But the whole this is fun too and beautifully drawn.
And free!
Nothing but win here.
Overall grade: A+ just for the sheer insanity and originality

I loved this story far more than I thought I would when it was first announced.
ReplyDeleteBoth Kara and Blade seemed to be written as I’d expect and whilst I’ve never read anything with Mojo in it before he came across how I understood he would.
The art was good but I was, particularly impressed with the story and CRC Payne with this, and the equally fine Wayne family adventures, once again shows they’re a writer I’d like to see more of.
I thought the bite curing Kara was more Blade sucking the Kryptonite out of her blood than the bite itself curing her but either way it was still a barrel of fun
