O..."I wonder why that image resonates so much. One of my theories is that Supergirl's death had more impact that DC thought it would. Instead of her being a footnote, a secondary character, she meant something to people. Another is that it stands as the end of an era. Someone bright and optimistic is killed. The grim and gritty era of comics starts shortly thereafter. Maybe Supergirl's death meant something more, something about comics."

Most assuredly.

It's so ironic it's funny. DC considered Supergirl to be forgettable, irrelevant, obsolete, expendable and replaceable. So they killed her off... in such a fashion it was guaranteed she wouldn't be forgotten.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-57411297273232911712014-12-19T07:37:19.330-05:002014-12-19T07:37:19.330-05:00Thanks for all the great comments.

I have definitely read a bunch of stories about this decision, so great to hear Perez' side of things.

And yes, that is Superman Blue in Genesis. Gwen Stacy came back three times in that period right???
jFAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-6260857877391352352014-12-17T02:46:32.230-05:002014-12-17T02:46:32.230-05:00In the Genesis spread, isn't Superman-Blue on ...In the Genesis spread, isn't Superman-Blue on the lower front (just in front of Captain Marvel)?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-68039007132375386262014-12-16T21:39:05.817-05:002014-12-16T21:39:05.817-05:00Killing off Supergirl was a classic example of sho...Killing off Supergirl was a classic example of short term close minded thinking and very poor leadership of DC. The shock value can gain readership immediately but in the long run is a loss because it erodes and betrays the fan base. They also lost more than a decade of opportunity to sell Supergirl.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-5268262396353605102014-12-16T17:27:55.966-05:002014-12-16T17:27:55.966-05:00With regards to Supergirl and COIE #7, there is an...With regards to Supergirl and COIE #7, there is an interview with George Perez from 1985, where he tells all about how it happened. You might find it interesting (I did):

"Pérez: And I draw everyone in this damn thing. In issue #7, we get to kill off a major character.

MacDONALD: Who is it?

Pérez: It’s Supergirl.

MacDONALD: Oh, no!

Pérez: She dies in issue #7 MacDONALD: Well, I guess Helen Slater did it, didn’t she? (laughs) Pérez: Yeah, well, she did as good a job as she could, unfortunately, the movie just…

MacDONALD: The movie sealed her fate, didn’t it?

Pérez: Yeah. She was a question mark, as far as the death list. Because Marv actually had a death list made, and sent it to Jenette, and there were some people who were checked, some people who were crossed off, saying “They may have potential,” and Supergirl had a question mark on her. It was dependent on the success of the Supergirl movie. Well, needless to say, a week after the Supergirl movie came out, she was perfectly checked off on the death list."

There's more; Pérez says he drew the cover without knowing the plot of issue 7, among other things.
http://www.titanstower.com/focus-on-george-perez/Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09055675095443418258noreply@blogger.com
