He was created as the big bad of the WildC.A.T.S., but his lack of a personality or motivation coupled with a derivative design meant that he was only ever used by lesser lights at Wildstorm (possibly under editorial duress.) Not only does this give the character a purpose, but he's a lot more interesting as Superman's Sinestro than as a Silver Age Magneto to the Chromium Age X-Men.

Funnily enough, the New 52 rewrite of the Martian Manhunter's origin rattling around in my head for months involved Helspont. Too bad he belongs to the Superman Family now, not that my ideas had a snowball's chance anyway...Diabolu Frankhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04685199809207954223noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-46152317679096433182012-04-27T16:09:01.183-04:002012-04-27T16:09:01.183-04:00It's not a landmark issue, the plot is basic, ...It's not a landmark issue, the plot is basic, but I enjoyed it thoroughly as it gave me a confident smart superman that I recognised and want to read about.

Thanks for the comment and great review by you.

That's exactly how I felt. This wasn't ground-breaking, but it was solid. And I needed that in this title.Anjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10023193805914075078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-70961844905537514832012-04-27T14:17:36.071-04:002012-04-27T14:17:36.071-04:00I wonder if this is Jurgens and Giffen's comme...I wonder if this is Jurgens and Giffen's commentary on all these recent story arcs. Was this simply their way off strengthening the underlying structure of Superman. I felt like they were saying to me 'hey Anj, I know Superman hasn't been written like Superman too much recently. But don't worry, we understand who he is and the important stuff won't change.' And best of all, it read well. Not overdone. Just right.

I had the exact same feeling.
The issue opened up with the now atypical nihilistic/pessimistic view of Superman/Supergirl and after last weeks Supergirl vs. US army debacle this felt like the last straw to me as a reader, but then we get the rather clever subvertion from Giffen and Jurgens that this is just Helspont's construct, the world isn't really this bad.
I liked that as it was then sharply contrasted by a remarkable show of character from Superman, this felt like the REAL superman at long last and I do think this was a deliberate commentary and subvertion on what's we've been dealt with so far from DC.

It's not a landmark issue, the plot is basic, but I enjoyed it thoroughly as it gave me a confident smart superman that I recognised and want to read about.
If they could only get the romance with Lois started again it would be even more attractive as a regular purchase, but if they do then it becomes a different book and character than they've so far given us... a HAPPY superman?!! We can't be having that.

My Review:
http://www.comicboards.com/php/show.php?rpy=superman-2012042621055225Dave Mullennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2669531469217423923.post-12239495897729422002012-04-27T10:30:35.586-04:002012-04-27T10:30:35.586-04:00Thanks for the comment Val.
